How to upgrade Office 365 Personal to Home edition so you can use it on more devices

Office 365 is a great way to access Microsoft's suite of office tools on a subscription basis. It ensures you won't be left in the dust when a new version of the product comes out, because your Office is going to be kept up to date as long as you're a subscriber. Did you start with Office 365 Personal but now need Office on multiple computers, tablets, and phones? No problem. Upgrading from Personal to Home edition won't take long.

Products used in this guide

Comparing Office 365 subscriptions

There are a couple of options to choose from when purchasing a subscription. Both get you access to classic Office tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Where the subscriptions differ, however, is in how many individual devices can use Office 365 simultaneously, as well as how many users get an Office 365 license.

Home5556

On top of the number of devices that can be used, included OneDrive storage also differs between Personal and Home subscriptions. With a Personal plan, you'll get 1 TB of OneDrive storage for one user. If there are more people vying for space, a Home subscription gets 1 TB of OneDrive storage for six people. That's 6 TB total storage spread out over the six licensed users.

Note that in the past you were only able to install Office 365 on a certain number of devices; this has now changed to an unlimited number of devices, though you can only be signed in on up to five devices at once.

If you initially purchased Office 365 Personal but now need Office for multiple people, fret not. Upgrading to Office 365 Home from Personal is a snap.

These are all the biggest user complaints about the October 2018 update

The latest version of Windows 10 is causing headaches among users, and here's what everyone is complaining the most.

The October 2018 Update (version 1809) is the second semi-annual feature update and the sixth major refresh for Windows 10 that introduces a new set of improvements and features around productivity, performance, and security, including the highly requested dark theme for File Explorer and new cloud clipboard.

In addition, this release includes two new built-in apps, including Your Phone and Snip & Sketch. Microsoft Edge and Windows Security receive several improvements, and a lot more.

Although this is another significant update designed to improve the overall experience, no every device is upgrading to the new version without stumbling into glitches, as many frustrated users have been reporting many problems with the update.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll highlight some of the complaints users are shouting with the October 2018 Update.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update problems and complaints

Here are some of the most important problems and complaints from users moving to the newest version of Windows 10:

Install problems with Windows 10 version 1809

As per usual, the biggest complaints with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update are regarding installation.

Missing files after upgrade fiasco

Although hiccups during the early days of a new version of Windows 10 are expected, nobody expected to click the Install button only to return after the upgrade to find out that their files were completely gone.

Shortly after the company announced the availability of the October update, as manually download, a small number of frustrated users started reporting that the upgrade process deleted their documents, pictures, videos, and other personal files.

At the official Microsoft forums, Robert Ziko reported:

I have just updated my Windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in the amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995, and nothing like that ever happened to me.

On Reddit, users tksn said:

I downloaded the assistant, and it started downloading. When I woke up this morning the download AND the install had finished (might be a bit scary to some, but okay - I was going to upgrade anyway). I then proceeded to go about my daily routine. Upon opening my music mixing program, I noticed something strange. Some of the packaged content had disappeared, and so had my user library. Upon further inspection of the containing folders ("C:\Users\Public\Documents" and "C:\Users\user\Documents") the files had suddenly completely vanished.

Also on Reddit, user mrStov3 shared a similar story:

I finished the update and restarted my PC. Upon arriving at the desktop, I quickly realized that several files and programs were missing. I grabbed a cold beer in anticipation of the rage to follow. Programs like Spotify and Discord were gone (no big deal, re-downloaded) but I also found that all of my Rainmeter skins and files were COMPLETELY gone, along with EVERYTHING FROM PICTURES AND DOCUMENTS.

On Windows Central, one of our readers (anon(10531315)) said:

Happened to me yesterday. "Documents" folder was emptied on my T470 laptop, and the files were nowhere to be found. Fortunately, everything was backed up on a NAS.

The missing files after upgrading bug is perhaps the biggest and most serious problem found in this new version, and it was so significant that even forced Microsoft to stop the rollout.

Thankfully, the problem now has been fixed, and the October 2018 Update should no longer delete files after the upgrade.

The only caveat is that the fixes will not recover your files. If you upgraded to the October 2018 Update before the fixes were available and your files were deleted, you'll need to contact the company directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area. Although the Microsoft support team will help you recover your files, the company will not guarantee that you'll get some or all of your files.

If you're planning to upgrade, make sure to backup your files before proceeding.

Intel Audio device drivers

While there hasn't been a lot of reports, as the new version became available, the Microsoft support website started warning users about a compatibility issue with a "range of Intel Display Audio device drivers," which can cause excessive processor utilization and significantly affect battery life.

According to the company's support site, "if you see a "What needs your attention" notification" when trying to upgrade, and the Intel Display Audio device driver (intcdaud.sys, versions 10.25.0.3 – 10.25.0.8) is installed on your system, you should click the Back button to cancel the installation. Otherwise, you will end up with problems.

If you're unable to get the October update because of this issue, Intel already released an update (version 10.25.0.10) that includes a fix for this compatibility problem.

Slow installation

Although there are a lot of factors that can affect the installation process, several users have been concerned about the time that it takes to install this release.

A Reddit user said:

Windows 10 October 2018 update - Stuck at 0% for 4 hours.

At the Microsoft forums another user explains a similar scenario:

When I try to update my laptop containing Windows Enterprise to Windows 10's October 2018 Update (version 1809). It gets stuck on 42% after several reboots. When I do a clean install with an ISO, it installs alright. I have the same issue on another laptop. >

Apps problems with Windows 10 version 1809

In addition to the installation problems, there has been a lot of complaints about apps breaking, disappearing, or not connecting to the internet.

Microsoft Store apps connectivity

While you can fix most app-related problems by reinstalling the app in question, this time around, after installing the October 2018 Update, many users noticed that apps, such as Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Store, and other modern apps could not connect to the internet even though the device had a working connection to the internet.

On Reddit, user zeroomegazx explained:

After applying 1809 to a very clean install of 1803 most of my apps will not see network connections including the windows store. IT professional here so I've tried all of the usual stuff. Anyone else experiencing this? Makes me mad cuz I can't play Forza...... among other network related apps...

At the official Microsoft forums, Gregorc Simon shared a similar story:

I have just updated my PC from 1803 to 1809 on company's PC. Now I noticed that Edge and Mail apps are not working. Meanwhile, I can use Outlook, Chrome, Firefox, IE without any problem.

On Windows Central, reader Vandrey Trindade explained:

I'm testing Windows 10 October Update 2018 on my work machine, it installed without problems. The only thing not working is modern apps not been aware of my Internet connection. Windows Store, Feedback hub, Movies, and TV... none of them are working because they can't find my Internet. Everything else is connecting just fine, even Windows Update searching online... lol

Microsoft hasn't acknowledged these as bugs with the October 2018 Update, but it appears that modern apps, including Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Store, relies on the Transfer Control Protocol / Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and if this feature is disabled on the device, then apps won't be able to connect to the internet.

In many cases, users also reported that switching the network profile to "Private" to "Public" fixes the issue.

Microsoft Edge favorite syncing

Several users also complained about Microsoft Edge deleting their collection of favorite.

For example, on Reddit, user NyanPoyo reported the following:

After 1809 update I lost all my favorites in MS Edge on my PC. Because both PC and Phone are linked to the same MS Account my phone just synchronized to PC. Now favorites are empty on both devices. Thank you, MS.

In a different thread, user wotmate shares:

shared favorites are completely gone since updating my PC to 1809. Everything seems to be syncing OK, EXCEPT edge.

Bluetooth notifications

Also, several Windows 10 users have been reporting problems with Bluetooth devices after upgrading to version 1809.

User hasnogames on Reddit said:

My Sony MDR-1000x worked flawlessly in 1803, probably the first time in Win10's history, but after 1809 they constantly either lose connection or go mute every other second.

User zahaco shared a similar problem:

After updating to 1809 my Bluetooth earbuds have started to intermittently cut out. They appear to still be paired/connected, but I have to reset the sound output in affected programs (or re-connect them) in order for them to work again.

Other users also complained about Windows 10 unable to display battery percentage for the Xbox Wireless Controller:

1809: Still no Bluetooth battery percentage for Xbox Controller. Seriously? ).

Feature problems with Windows 10 version 1809

In the early days of version 1809, a small number of users have also recorded problems with various features, including File Explorer, notifications, Task Manager, and Start menu.

File Explorer dark theme

Perhaps one of the biggest visual changes that you will find with the October 2018 Update is the new dark theme for File Explorer, but it appears that the feature isn't working as expected for many users.

For example, a user on Reddit reports:

File explorer dark mode not fully dark.

User VKorso on Reddit said:

I did a clean install however after reboot Dark Mode shows me now this… horizontal ugly bar, can I "reset" dark mode?

At the official Microsoft forums, user tr3zyy shares:

I updated to V 1809 last night, and I am having issues with the dark mode in file explorer and drop down dialog boxes.

A lot of frustrated users made their voice heard by simply showing a screenshot of the problem using the dark theme in File Explorer:

Notifications

Another bug that seems to be causing headaches is a problem with the notification mechanism. A lot of users have said that after upgrading to Windows 10 version 1809, they stopped receiving toast notifications and notifications no longer appear in Action Center.

Tailb_Dota on Reddit said:

"No New Notifications" magically appears/disappears. Also, Action Center sometimes shows on the other side. v. 1809.

In a different thread, user chandrashehar_sigh shares a similar story:

Notifications not showing after updating to 1809. For example after a screenshot, the snip and sketch pop-up must come as a banner notification. That doesn't show up. Nothing else shows up ever after the update.

In the Microsoft forums, Radek Šamánek shares:

I updated all my devices to the newest windows 10 build 1809. On both surface 3 and laptop Lenovo G580 I experience a problem with not working windows notifications. The notifications icon in the Windows 10 task bar tells me I have new notifications, but when I click on it, I can not access them because the action center is empty.

Microsoft hasn't acknowledged a problem with notifications, but some users are suggesting to revise the Background Apps page in the "Privacy" settings section and checking apps you want to receive notifications fixes the problem.

Start menu

The Start menu also seems to have a few issues as several users have noted problems with the user interface and search.

For instance, on Reddit, user PM_COFFEE_TO_ME, posted a screenshot that clearly shows that search is not working as expected.

User PrvRyan also shared another screenshot that shows how Live Tiles overlap when pinned to the Start menu.

Also, at the official Microsoft forums, JoelBoydston1 complains about Start menu settings getting reset after the upgrade.

I've just installed the win 10 fall updates (version 1809). Now, whenever I reboot, windows restores the default start menu apps and icons, eliminating my customizations.

Disk Cleanup

Although the legacy Disk Cleanup tool doesn't seem to have problems, many people have been reporting potential accidentally file deletion as a result of the utility introducing a new option to delete the contents from the "Downloads" folder.

On Reddit, user wewegoeswild reports:

Windows 10 1809 Update includes Downloads Folder in the Disk Cleanup. Please do not include them, almost all of my files are still in the downloads folder.

The Disk Cleanup tool is now a deprecated feature starting with the October 2018 Update, and it's recommended to use Storage sense to free up disk space.

Settings

A small number of people have also complained about the upgrade process deleting their custom settings.

For example, a user from the Microsoft forums reported the following:

Latest October feature update reset and wiped things that weren't supposed to be wiped.

Some of the settings that the October 2018 Update deleted, include:

  • Task scheduler tasks have been brought back to default values, history has been wiped and turned off.
  • All past events viewable through Event Viewer have been wiped.
  • System restore has been shut off, and all restore points removed.
  • Windows update shows no updates in update history other than "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809 Successfully installed on ‎03/‎10/‎2018" meaning that all past updates history has been removed.

On Reddit, user wthreex complains:

Why do all my settings change for each update? Like: Background desktop, sound setting, folder option, Everything! How do I stop this?

Although this may seem like a bug (as we've seen reports in the past), in the same thread, another Reddit user suggested that this particular problem could have occurred as a result of a corrupt profile, in which case, Windows 10 ended up applying the default settings.

Also, at the Microsoft forums, user ForsterM shares:

I installed Windows 10 1809 on my PC (automated update). I didn't have any Data loss, but one thing that's annoying is, I changed my Start menu (deleted some tiles, add new tiles, etc.) but when I restarted my PC, all changes are gone. I tried it several times without success.

In addition, there have been various complaints filed about users unable to sign in to their account after upgrading to the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

A user at the Microsoft forums said:

One desktop lost my login password and would not let me back in. I was lucky to find A YouTube video on how to get back in without my password. Microsoft should have tested this version 1809 better. This could cause major problems for users.

Also, on a different thread, user InformanceICT explains:

Today colleges of mine started to get the Windows 10 v 1809 update. Nothing to worry about, really, was my thought. But as the update finished, logging in 'stalled' the computer.

Performance problems with Windows 10 version 1809

While most people would expect a new version to perform better than a previous release, some users have been experiencing performance issues after installing the October 2018 Update.

Task Manager

Windows 10 users who recently upgraded to the October 2018 Update quickly started noticing that the Task Manager wasn't displaying accurate processor usage.

On Reddit, user invisiblehacker explained:

When I open my task manager and switch to more details. The CPU usage of the processes has one more division by 10. For example, when I open chrome, it will show the overall CPU usage to be 100% but chrome's usage to be 3-4 %.

User FF-2018, at the official Microsoft forums, reports in more details the same problem:

This bug was introduced in Windows 1809 (Redstone 5 Oct 2018 Update). The Task Manager reports total CPU use correctly, as is confirmed by the Resource Monitor. The Resource Monitor reports CPU usage by individual apps correctly, but the Task Manager does not. Instead, the Task Manager reports a fictitiously low figure, less than 10% of the actual usage for individual apps, even though total CPU use is reported correctly. This bug can be reproduced by doing a CPU-intensive task such as video encoding (H264 or H265), and in multiple instances, if need be.

The good news about this problem is that Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, and it's working on a fix.

Gaming

Performance while gaming seems to have affected a few Windows 10 users after upgrading to version 1809.

For example, on Reddit, user gitbotv complained about low frame per second (fps):

Is anyone else getting low FPS in OBS which also translates to the Stream?

Although some other users suggested the problem was a graphics driver related issue, gitbotv said that after playing around with the settings, disabling Game Mode in the Settings app fixed the problem.

In a different conversation, user WhyAaatroxWhy reports:

After the latest 1809 October update, it became very sluggish both in-game and on-desktop.

In the same thread another user shares the same frustration:

Very sluggish even after dduing and reinstalling drivers. I've installed at least 3 different drivers and done 4 different ways of installing them (...), And the only better gaming experience I got was installing previous drivers 389.xx then dirty installing 399.24 on top of it and then reinstalling my monitor drivers. But honestly, I'm going to chalk it up to this October update and hope they release a fix.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

After halting the distribution of the new version, Microsoft released an update to fix the data loss problem, but it appears that cumulative update is causing Blue Screen of Death errors on some devices from HP.

According to Reddit users, update KB4464330 that bumps the version number to build 17763.55 is causing bug checks that are not easy to fix:

One of These 'Quality' Updates Can Cause an Unrecoverable WDF_VIOLATION Blue Screen Error & Make Your PC Unbootable!

The Microsoft forums also includes similar reports:

This update has hit several computers in our organization, and it's causing them to all blue screen and prompts the user to perform a Windows repair. Performing a system restore from the day before seems to fix it for now.

Wrapping things up

And these are just some of the problems and complains. Across the web, you'll find a lot of reports unveiling other isolated incidents with the October 2018 Update. Again, no everyone is having issues, but it's now becoming evident that Microsoft is having update quality control problems, as the company has millions of people testing pre-releases of Windows 10 and some of these issues could have been prevented.

In the case that the October update isn't available for your device automatically, it's recommended not to install it manually until you know for sure that it's safe to upgrade. You can always block the update using this guide.

If you can't wait, don't forget to create a full backup of your computer or at least a backup of your files before proceeding with the install. In addition, you can also remove apps that may cause conflicts, and disconnecting unnecessary peripherals to prevent problems during the installation.

If you stumble upon issues with version 1809, remember to share them in the comments, or use the Windows Central forums to get help. Also, don't forget to check our comprehensive guide to troubleshoot and fix problems with this update.

Does Surface Laptop 2 have USB-C and Thunderbolt 3?

$
0
0

Best answer: Sadly, Microsoft did not include Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C support in the new Surface Laptop 2. Luckily, there are many alternatives.

Why no USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 for Surface Laptop 2?

Microsoft is often criticized for its dismissal of USB-C, touting its own Surface Connect Port for things like docks and extra ports, such as Microsoft's own Surface Dock. Frustratingly, it prevents the Surface Laptop 2 and similarly USB-C-less Surface Pro 6 from accessing external GPUs, which would vastly increase the usefulness of those devices, particularly as a true desktop replacement.

Microsoft tends to refer to market demand for USB-C when defending its lack of support for the input. It's certainly true that other, older standard USB ports are more widespread, particularly when it comes to legacy devices. However, USB-C and particularly Thunderbolt 3 are far more useful and versatile that Microsoft could really be doing more to push the tech, sporting vastly higher bandwidth. That said, Thunderbolt 3 tends to be more costly to implement than old-school USB ports, which would undoubtedly drive the price of the Surface Laptop up even more. Intel dropped the licensing fee associated with Thunderbolt 3's implementation, though, in an attempt to improve adoption. So far it seems to have helped with almost every OEM ... except for Microsoft.

Microsoft isn't ignoring USB-C completely though, including it in its Surface Book 2 and upcoming Surface Studio 2. There's still no support for Thunderbolt 3, though, and that's frustratingly.

Best alternatives

While we wait for Microsoft to get with the program, there are many great alternatives worth your consideration if you need Thunderbolt 3-powered USB-C ports. These are a couple of our favorites.

XPS 13 brings some thunder(bolt)

Dell XPS 13

From $810 at Dell

Thin and light, sleek and sexy.

Dell has been bringing fire (and thunder) to its laptop lineup as of late, and its Dell XPS 13 is widely regarded as one of the best 13-inch laptops out there. With a huge array of configuration options, even the cheapest model comes with two Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C ports which support power delivery and external GPUs. This device is well worth your consideration.

The Dell XPS 13 more closely matches the Surface Laptop 2's form factor, but if you're interested in spending a little more for additional features like inking and multiple display configuration modes, check out the versatile HP Spectre x360.

Go 360 degrees (with inking)

HP Spectre x360

From $950 at HP

More flexibility.

If you're interested in something with a little more flexibility, consider the HP Spectre x360. It rocks Thunderbolt 3 ports in addition to a 360 hinge, making it ideal for inking and art work.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update breaks internet for apps — here's the fix

$

If your apps can't connect to the internet after upgrading to the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, try these workarounds.

Since the original release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) on October 2, we've seen numerous reports of issues with the new version, including data loss-related problems, bugs in the user interface, and driver compatibility issues.

In addition to the big pile of reports, many users have also been experiencing network problems with apps. On the official Microsoft forums and across the web, users have been reporting that after upgrading to version 1809, Microsoft Store apps can no longer connect to the internet, even though there's a working network connection and classic desktop program can connect without issues.

Although there could be many factors that contribute to connection problems, in this particular case, it appears that the October 2018 Update is to blame.

The good news is that Microsoft is aware of the issue and eventually a fix will rollout to permanently resolve this connectivity problem. In the meantime, there are a few workarounds that you can try to get apps (for example, Mail and Calendar, Microsoft Store, Edge, and News) working without having to wait for the update.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through three ways to try getting Microsoft Store apps connected to the internet.

How to switch network profiles on Windows 10

To get your Microsoft Store apps to connect to the internet after installing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, you can try switching the network profile from "Private" to "Public" using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Internet.
  3. Click on Status.
  4. On the right side, click on the Change connection properties link.

  5. Under "Network profile," select the Public profile.

After completing these steps, relaunch the Microsoft Store or Microsoft Edge app to test if the connectivity problem has been resolved.

How to enable IPv6 on Windows 10

Usually, the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) networking protocol should be enabled by default, but if it was disabled before you installed Windows 10 version 1809, apps may not connect to the internet. Use these steps to make sure the protocol is running on your device:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Internet.
  3. Click on Wi-Fi or Ethernet (depending on the connection you're using).
  4. On the right side, under "Related settings," click the Change adapter link.

  5. Right-click the active network adapter, and select Properties.

  6. Under "This connection uses the following items," check the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) option.

  7. Click the OK button

Once you've completed the steps, restart your computer, and then apps you acquired from the Microsoft Store (including the Store itself) should now connect to the internet without problems.

How to reset network adapters on Windows 10

In the case that you've tried both methods above and apps are still unable to connect, you can also try resetting the network components on your device using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Internet.
  3. Click on Status.
  4. Click the Network reset link.

  5. Click the Reset now button.

  6. Click the Yes button.

After completing the steps, all the network adapters installed on your computer will be reinstalled, and their settings will go back to the original state. As a result, depending on your previous network configuration, you may need to reinstall some software (such as virtual switches and VPN clients), and you'll need to reconfigure your wireless connection.

You can also check out our comprehensive guide, which outlines fixes and troubleshooting steps to overcome many of the problems upgrading and using the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Are your apps now connecting to the internet? Which method resolve this issue on your device? Tell us in the comments.

Should you buy a Surface Pen for the Surface Laptop 2?

$
0
0

Best answer: No. There is nowhere to store the pen on a Surface Laptop 2, and since it lacks a 360-degree hinge, inking at an upward angle is a total pain. You're far better off getting a 2-in-1 like the Surface Pro 6 or Surface Go for inking.

The Surface Laptop 2 just isn't good for inking

The Surface Laptop 2 is a powerful, sleek, and sexy device, and while it does support inking, its form factor simply doesn't lend itself well to doing so.

The Laptop 2 has a fixed hinge that doesn't allow you to convert the laptop into a flat configuration, not without angling the keyboard up in the air at least. The display does support inking with 4,096 levels of pressure complete with tilt support, but, the fact that you can't lay the device out flat just prevents it from being a pleasant experience. At best, you'll be signing documents or perhaps annotating a picture, but for that, you can purchase a cheap non-digital stylus or simply use your finger.

Unlike the Surface Pro, Surface Book, and Surface Go, the Surface Laptop 2 doesn't even have magnetized edges for storing the Pen, since it just kind of knows its not designed for frequent inking.

Thankfully, literally every other type of Surface not only has some form of flat screen configuration, but also includes magnetic storage for the pen. If you're going to get your ink on, look elsewhere.

If you want a laptop-like form factor with the option of inking, the Surface Book 2 should be your first consideration. Some configurations come with dedicated graphics too, allowing you to enjoy VR, higher-end gaming, and intensive programs such as Adobe Premiere. If you want something portable but powerful, the Surface Pro 6 features quad-core processing, wrapped in a tight form factor ideal for taking to university or work, while still packing enough power to run high-end programs and even 3D games. If you simply want inking without breaking the bank, the cheap and cheerful Surface Go might not be the most powerful device in this piece, but it's small, sleek, and cheap, and is more than capable of running quality inking tools such as Sketchable, Photoshop, and OneNote.

Where to buy a Dell Inspiron 15 5570 replacement battery

Best answer: The best place to get a replacement battery for the Dell 5570 is BattDepot. Even Dell doesn't sell it!

BattDepot: Battery for Dell Inspiron 15 5570 ($43 plus shipping)

Not even Dell has the replacement

Don't ask me why, but Dell doesn't have the replacement battery for the Inspiron 5570 available on their website. They have the replacement chargers but the battery itself is only available on BattDepot or eBay.

I don't like to recommend eBay for replacement parts as the availability tends to be hit and miss and I'd rather you get what you need reliably. If you're a satisfied eBay customer, I've seen them listed there and they are around the same price as BattDepot

Always check your warranty first

Before you consider buying a replacement battery for your Inspiron 5570, make sure your old one isn't replaceable under your warranty. Most warranties are for the first year as standard, so if your purchase is fairly new, it's definitely worth asking Dell's support team before you splash for a new one. Your battery should last you well over two years before degrading, so if you're having trouble with it reaching maximum charge or it seems to discharge faster than it normally does, you should check with Dell.

I normally charge the battery fully and time the length of time it takes to run down over the first two weeks. That way if my battery runs down faster than that average in the first year I can get a warranty replacement before it's too late and I'll have a new battery for another year.

There is a shipping cost

Amazon has ruined most other sites for me when it comes to shipping costs. Unfortunately, with no two-day Prime shipping, you will have to pay the $10 minimum shipping charge from BattDepot to get the replacement battery you need.

Fortunately, there are a few choices on shipping. The $10 is 4-7 days on FedEx ground but you won't be able to get it shipped to a PO Box. I would probably go for the USPS Priority shipping: it's $14.99 but should arrive at your house in 2-4 business days. It's not quite Prime shipping, but it'll at least get to you in a timely manner.

Our pick

Inspiron 15 5570 battery replacement

$43 at BattDepot

The only place to get the official replacement

If you really do need a battery replacement and you can't get it through a warranty replacement then BattDepot is the best place to get it. You can get it from eBay as well but it's hit and miss availability wise.

Windows 10's Disk Cleanup is no longer the best tool to free up space

$

It's time to embrace Storage sense on Windows 10 and let Disk Cleanup go.

On Windows 10, Disk Cleanup has been a handy tool for freeing up space after upgrading to a new version and for getting rid of junk files on your hard drive. However, beginning with the October 2018 Update (version 1809), Windows 10 is deprecating the tool in favor of Storage sense, which offers a modern experience with more features.

You can continue to use Disk Cleanup, but it's probably time to stop. The reason isn't just because the tool will no longer be maintained and future updates may break it, but also because concerns of potentially accidental deletion of personal files, and with version 1809, Windows 10 is also introducing a new option that allows you to delete everything within the Downloads folder.

The option isn't new, it was first introduced with Storage sense, but since most people have been using Disk Cleanup for years, and they're used to checking every item in the list without giving it a second look, it's easier to get confused and end up deleting important content alongside temporary files.

If you want to reduce the chance of accidental file deletion within the Downloads folder and other potential problems, it's a good time to start using Storage sense. In addition, it's also important to start being more alert and remember to save those downloads that you want to keep in a different location. Here's how to do all that.

How to use Storage sense to delete temporary files

If you're running out of space, or you want to remove unnecessary files to reclaim disk space on Windows 10, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Under "Storage sense," click the Free up space now option.

  5. Select the temporary files you want to delete.

Warning: Do not check the Downloads option, because you can accidentally delete important files.

  6. Click the Remove files button.

Once you complete these steps, the temporary files you selected will be deleted from your device making additional space to store more important files.

How to disable automatic cleanup in the Downloads folder

If you usually keep a lot of important files in the Downloads folder, you also want to make sure to disable the option that deletes unused files using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Under "Storage sense," click the Change how we free up space automatically option.

  5. Under "Temporary files," use the Delete files in my Downloads folder if they have been there for drop-down menu, and select the Never option.

After completing the steps, your downloads will remain in the folder until you delete them manually.

How to change the default location to store downloads

Another way to prevent accidental file deletion when using Disk Cleanup or Storage sense is to change the default location that your browser uses to store downloads.

For instance, on Microsoft Edge, you can use these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click on the Settings and more (three-dotted) menu button.
  3. Click on Settings.

  4. Click on General.
  5. Under "Downloads," click the Change button.

  6. Select another location to store files you download from the internet.
  7. Click the Select folder button.

If you don't want to make those changes, you can turn on the Ask me what to do with each download toggle switch and every time that you download a new file you'll be able to decide the location to store the content.

Is Synology DS119j a good NAS for Plex 4K playback?

$
0

Synology DS119j

Best answer: You will be able to play 4K content on other devices streamed from the DS119j, but don't expect to be able to transcode anything at all. It's better to go for the DS218+ as a failsafe should you need to transcode certain files.

CPU with no transcode support

The new DS119j is Synology's super-affordable NAS model for those who want to throw together a budget-friendly server for file storage. Because of this, the company opted to include a Marvell Armada 3700 88F3720 CPU, clocked at just 800MHz. This processor is great for energy efficiency, but not so good in the streaming and media playback department.

This processor sees the DS119j draw just 10W of power while the HDD is being accessed — and just 5W while hibernating. If you need a simple NAS solution for file storage, backups and more, the DS119j is ideal, but when it comes to media serving you're a little more restricted.

While the more powerful Intel processor in the DS218+ doesn't technically handle 4K transcoding well enough, it can do 1080p transcoding, which allows the NAS to server incompatible file types to devices that don't normally support them. The DS119j doesn't have this luxury. If you can't serve 4K content, you won't be able to transcode.

Honestly, if you're serious about Plex video playback, you'll want to spend more money on a NAS with better hardware. Synology simply hasn't designed the DS119j for such tasks.

Transcode more with Plex Pass

When you decide to pick up a more expensive Synology NAS (like the DS218+ I've already mentioned), you'll want to upgrade your Plex account with the Plex Pass. Without the Plex Pass, hardware transcoding is locked away, leaving you with less powerful software-based transcoding.

With Plex Pass, you have the choice of three plans: $5 per month, $40 annually, or $150 for lifetime access. The one-off payment of $150 would save you a lot in the long run, especially if you have everything set up as you like.

The DS218+ from Synology is a mid-tier NAS with a capable Intel CPU. Not only does it have vastly more performance than the DS119j, but also allows you to install more drives and faster RAM.

The Fallout 76 beta is your chance to explore the wasteland early. Here's how and when to play.

Fallout 76 marks a new direction for Bethesda's post-apocalyptic role-playing franchise and is shaping up as one of its most ambitious titles yet. As a shared-world multiplayer experience, you'll have the ability to build a home, hunt creatures, and uncover secrets with friends for the first time.

While its expected November 14 release is still some time away, Fallout 76's beta test is your opportunity to play early. Here we wrap up everything we know about the Fallout 76 beta and explain how to play it yourself.

See at AmazonSee at Microsoft

What to expect from Fallout 76 beta

As announced alongside Fallout 76 at E3 2018, Bethesda plans to host its B.E.T.A. (Break It Early Test Application) for the game ahead of release. Common among most big upcoming titles, these tests are an ideal opportunity to squash issues before release. And being the first online Fallout title, a large pool of players is ideal for scaling its networking technologies.

Unlike many beta tests for previous shared-world role-playing titles, Bethesda has announced its plans to release the B.E.T.A. as the "full game." While various restrictions on content and progression were expected, it appears the test is now simply an early access trial of the near-final product. This indicates the B.E.T.A. is solely to prepare Bethesda for server management and optimizing the opening experience on launch day. Furthermore, Bethesda plans for all progression to transfer to the final game, giving you a boost on launch day.

Bethesda has also announced no form of non-disclosure agreement (NDA) will be enforced, while encouraging content creators to cover the B.E.T.A. Whether you're live streaming, uploading videos, or simply sharing screenshots to social media, you'll be covered by this policy.

How to sign-up for Fallout 76 beta

To gain access to the Fallout 76 beta test, Bethesda currently requires players to preorder a copy of the game ahead of launch. Fallout 76 is available for preorder in three separate versions: the standard game ($59.99), the premium "Tricentennial Edition," ($79.99) and the highly coveted "Power Armor Collector's Edition" ($200). Each of these editions guarantees a key upon preorder, across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or Windows PCs.

For those who preorder Fallout 76 digitally, beta access will be provided automatically once the test commences. After preordering digitally on the Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, or Bethesda.net eShop for PC, beta access will be tied to that account. There's no need to worry after ordering – you're ready to go.

For those who preorder at Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, and other participating retailers, you'll be provided a redeemable key. These keys can be redeemed at Bethesda's online beta portal, securing access for later this year. After placing your order, expect the key to arrive via email a few days after.

Fallout 76 beta release date and times

The Fallout 76 beta is currently set to launch on Tuesday, October 23 for Xbox One, via an exclusive early access period due to a Bethesda partnership. Seven days later, availability will expand to PlayStation 4 and PC on October 30. There are no plans to offer a pre-load before launch, meaning participants must install an estimated 45GB once servers go live.

Despite several weeks of beta testing, Fallout 76 also won't be playable "24/7" for the whole period. To gather large pools of players, servers will only be live for small timeframes, ranging from "four to eight hours." Session times will be announced in advance, but don't expect to play non-stop until launch day.

The beta awaits

As Fallout 76's release nears, we'll be sure to update this article with the latest details on its beta. In the meantime, Fallout 76 is now available for preorder starting at $59.99, ahead of its planned November 14 release for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PCs.

How to fix Xbox One 'Double NAT detected' error

Wrangling double NAT on Xbox One? There's no need to worry.

While Microsoft's Xbox One packs an expansive suite of online features, things don't always go to plan. If you're encountering the "Double NAT detected" error on your console, the networking jargon can be daunting, but it's a relatively simple solution.

Here's a brief explainer on double NAT, as it relates to gaming, and how to fix it today.

Guide to using Xbox One online: Networking, fixing lag, download speeds, and more

Understanding double NAT in gaming

In the average home network, your Xbox One console is connected to your router to access the internet. Your console is assigned a private Internet Protocol (IP) address when connected, which helps identify it on your local network. On the other hand, your home network has one public IP address which uniquely identifies it on the internet.

Known as Network Address Translation (NAT), this allows hundreds of devices to share one public IP address when connected to the internet. This technology plays a huge role in connectivity with multiplayer games, deciding how incoming traffic is handled. However, when multiple NAT devices are at play, it can cause issues for gamers.

When doubling up on devices performing NAT, Xbox One can display the "Double NAT detected" error in the console's network settings. This is often caused by multiple routers of gateways between your Xbox and the internet, preventing it from establishing a steady connection for gaming. To fix this error, it's key to remove one of these devices from the equation.

How to fix Xbox One double NAT

If your Xbox One is experiencing double NAT issues, you'll need to eliminate one NAT device on your network. This can be achieved by switching up hardware, or more commonly, streamlining your setup with small tweaks.

In most setups, the router your Xbox One is connected to is likely connected to another router or gateway. Often supplied by internet service providers, these often pack NAT and routing capabilities, on top of your main router. If this sounds familiar, it's the likely cause of double NAT.

Fix double NAT via your gateway

To avoid rewiring the whole network, we recommend configuring the router or gateway closest to the internet into "Bridge Mode." When enabled, this disables its NAT and routing functions, essentially acting as a simple passthrough modem.

  1. Navigate to your router login page. (For more details on logging in to your router, search online for guides related to your specific model.)
  2. Log in to your router using the required credentials.
  3. Navigate to the wireless options on your router. (This action once again varies between models, so search for specifics on your router.)
  4. Enable Bridge Mode.
  5. Save your changes.

After making any changes to your network, restart your Xbox One and check network diagnostics again.

Fix double NAT via your router

Alternatively, if your gateway doesn't support Bridge Mode, double NAT can still be avoided on your router. Using this method, you'll be configuring the router used by your Xbox One as an access point. This once again disables its NAT and routing functions, eliminating one of two NAT devices.

  1. Navigate to your router login page. (For more details on logging in to your router, search online for guides related to your specific model.)
  2. Log in to your router using the required credentials.
  3. Navigate to the wireless options on your router. (This action once again varies between models, so search for specifics on your router.)
  4. Enable Access Point (AP) Mode.
  5. Save your changes.

After making any changes to your network, restart your Xbox One and check network diagnostics again.

Wrapping up

At times, double NAT may be out of control. If these steps didn't solve your issue, check with your internet service provider or network administrator for more information.

How many Orbi mesh points do you need?

$
0
0

Best answer: For most homeowners, the Orbi router and a satellite are more than enough to cover your house with a single network. Each point has a fantastic range, so you may not need as many as you expect.

More coverage means less points required

The Netgear Orbi routers and satellites look and work similar to each other. They each create a sphere of Wi-Fi that goes beyond the floor and room they're sitting in, keeping a strong, steady connection to your devices and within the mesh system. One Orbi router and Orbi satellite can cover up to 5,000 square feet (about 465 square meters). Should you need more space covered, you can connect up to three satellites to your router and cover nearly 10,000 square feet (or around 929 square meters).

Orbi also offers different systems for different situations, including wall plug satellites and outdoor satellites, which connect just as easily as the desktop satellites. The best satellites for you depend on the size of your home – different satellites offer different ranges.

If you have a small area that isn't quite covered by your router, a wall plug satellite is a quick and easy fix. These smaller points connect to your walls without taking up a lot of space and can extend coverage by up to 1,500 square feet. To add coverage to an area that isn't covered by a wall plug satellite, you can go for the Orbi Wi-Fi Satellite (RBS40). These are the common points that can come bundled with the router and each cover up to 2,000 square feet. If you need further reach than what's possible with the RBS40, the Orbi RBS50 and Orbi RBS50Y (for outdoor use) can reach up to 2,500 square feet each, more than other Orbi satellites.

No two homes are the same

Not every house needs a mesh Wi-Fi system, and not every house is fully covered inside and out with just a router and satellite. Both the Orbi router and Orbi satellite offer four Ethernet ports each in case you need a wired connection through your home.

If you're interested in creating a wired backhaul connection within your system instead of the wireless backhaul which connects automatically, you can do so using star topology or daisy chain topology. You must have Orbi Router RBR50 and Orbi Satellites RBS50 with the latest firmware to create the Ethernet backhaul. For daisy chain topology, you must also check Enable Daisy-Chain Topology in your settings if it isn't already turned on. However, the dedicated band used for backhaul won't be freed when using Ethernet backhaul but is still something some people may be interested in.

Surface Pro 6 has significantly better battery life than last year's model

Surface Pro 6

Best answer: Battery life on the Core i5 model is substantially better than the last Surface Pro while also running cooler.

Microsoft: Surface Pro 6 (from $899)

Significant improvement on the previous model

During the course of our Surface Pro 6 review battery life was one of the key metrics we benchmarked. Using the PC Mark 8 Home Battery test, the Surface Pro 6 came away with a score of 5 hours and 25 minutes.

The Core i5 2017 model Surface Pro, by comparison, scored only 4 hours and 30 minutes. Not only is the Surface Pro 6 better, it's significantly better, with more than 20 percent longer life.

Don't be alarmed by the benchmark

It's easy to look at the figures above and be a little alarmed. But you shouldn't be. The PC Mark test is designed to leverage both the CPU and GPU, and so it will always come out lower than you'd expect to see in day to day life.

Indeed, more regular computing, such as web browsing, media consumption and work inside apps like Microsoft Office will yield a much stronger battery life. What can be taken away, though, is that you can expect at least one hour more from the Surface Pro 6 over the older model.

The Surface Pro 6 also runs cooler

It's not just longer battery life you get from the Surface Pro 6, either. Like its predecessor, the Core i5 Surface Pro 6 is fanless, but it's also packing two more cores with four more threads.

Despite being a quad-core processor, the Surface Pro 6 runs a little cooler than the older, dual-core Surface Pro. In our testing, the Surface Pro 6 was consistently 4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the previous model. It doesn't sound like much, but cooler is cooler. Especially when you're also getting more power.

Problems using Your Phone on Windows 10? Here's how to fix them.

Are you having issues with the Your Phone app on Windows 10 and Android? Then these troubleshooting steps should help to fix them.

On Windows 10, Your Phone is an app available starting with the October 2018 Update that further integrates your phone with your computer. It's a "window" that gives you quick access to your pictures and notifications, and it allows you to send and receive text messages. It all happens wirelessly and without you having to unlock your phone.

At this point, the new experience only works with Android phones running version 7.0+ of the mobile OS, and because it's still a work in progress features are missing, some of the functionalities are limited, and there's a good chance that you may come across errors and other problems. Thankfully, Microsoft has outlined some troubleshooting steps to complete the setup successfully and resolve common issues using the experience.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through several troubleshooting steps to successfully connect the Your Phone app with your Android device, and we look at some details you need to know when using this new experience.

Quick Note: In addition to the Windows 10 steps, we're also outlining steps to change the settings on your Android phone, and because the experience isn't the same across devices, it's likely the settings in this guide will be a little different on your phone. If you can't find a particular option, it's recommended to check your manufacturer support website for more specific steps.

How to fix connection errors with Your Phone

If you're getting the "We can't connect to your phone" message on your computer, then it means that something is preventing the connection between the two devices.

Here's a list of obvious (and not so obvious) things that you can try to get your PC connected with your Android phone:

Verify network connectivity

Your computer and phone won't connect unless the two devices can communicate. On your mobile device, swipe down from the top, and confirm that it's connected to the same wireless network as the computer you're trying to connect.

Also, you should make sure that your computer can connect to the internet. (If you can load a web page on the web browser, then your device is connected.)

Disable blocking features

If you're still unable to connect, then it could be a feature blocking the connection. On your phone and computer make sure that airplane mode is disabled.

On Android, use these instructions to disable Airplane mode:

  1. Open Notifications.
  2. Tap the Airplane mode button to turn it off.

On Windows 10, use these instructions to disable Airplane mode:

  1. In the bottom-right corner of the taskbar, click the Network icon.
  2. Turn off the Airplane mode button.

Turn off a metered connection

The Your Phone app doesn't work over a metered connection. If you're using a limited connection, you must disable the feature to allow the communication between devices.

On Android, use these instructions to disable a metered connection:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Data usage.
  3. Tap on Network Restrictions.
  4. Turn off the toggle switch for the connection.

If you're using the Data saver feature, in the "Data Usage" page, disable the feature as well.

On Windows 10, use these instructions to disable a metered connection:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Internet.
  3. Click on Status.
  4. Click the Change connection properties link.

  5. Turn on the Set as metered connection toggle switch.

Disable battery saver on your PC

If you're using the Windows 10 battery saver feature, either plug your computer to a power outlet or do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Battery.
  4. Turn off the Battery saver status until next charge toggle switch.

Alternatively, you can also click the battery icon, in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar, and use the slider to select a battery mode other than Battery saver.

Confirm Microsoft account

The new phone experience works using a Microsoft account, which means that you need to make sure that you're signed in to the Your Phone Companion app (on your Android device) using the same account that you're using on your PC.

On Android, use these steps to confirm your Microsoft account:

  1. Open the Your Phone Companion app.
  2. Tap the Settings (gear) button in the top-right.
  3. Tap on Accounts.
  4. Sign in with your Microsoft account as necessary.

On Windows 10, use these steps to confirm your Microsoft account:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Your Info.
  4. Verify that you're using the correct Microsoft account.

If you're using a local account on Windows 10, then Your Phone experience will not work.

Allow app in the background

If you're blocking the Your Phone app from running in the background, you won't be able to connect to your phone. You can make sure that you're allowing the app in the background using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Privacy.
  3. Click on Background apps.
  4. Turn on the Your Phone toggle switch.

Disable Do not disturb feature

During the initial setup, the app sends a notification to your phone, and if you're using the do not disturb feature on your Android device, you won't be able to complete the setup.

On Android, use these steps to turn off the do not disturb option:

  1. Open Notifications.
  2. Tap the Do Not Disturb option.

Share experiences

If you're getting the "We can't connect to your phone" message, it's also possible that either the "Share experiences" feature is disabled or there are problems with your Windows 10 account.

To resolve problems with the Share experiences feature, do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Shared experiences.
  4. Turn on the Share across devices toggle switch.

While in the "Shared experiences" settings, make sure that you're account is working correctly. If under "Accounts," you see a Fix now link, click the link and follow the instructions to resolve the issue.

How to fix 'Check your phone' message with Your Phone

If you see the "Check your phone" message while trying to set up the app, you may need to change the notification settings on your phone using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Notifications.
  3. Tap on the Your Phone Companion app.
  4. Turn on notifications for the app.

How to fix missing text messages problem with Your Phone

The Your Phone app currently supports access to photos and text messages. However, if you do not see all the messages, it's likely that they were sent using Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is a service not supported in the Windows 10 app.

If you want to see all your messages, you need to disable the RCS feature on Android using these steps:

  1. Open the default messaging app.
  2. Tap the menu (three-dotted) button in the top-right.
  3. Tap on Settings.
  4. Tap on Advanced (or More settings).
  5. Turn off the toggle switch for Chat features, Push messages, RCS messages, or Advanced messaging.

How to reset the Your Phone app on Windows 10 and Android

Alternatively, you can reset the app to resolve most common issues connecting your computer with your phone.

On Android, use these steps to reset the Your Phone Companion app:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps.
  3. Select the Your Phone Companion app.
  4. Tap on Force Stop.
  5. Tap on Storage.
  6. Tap on Clear Cache and Clear Data.

On Windows 10, use these steps to reset the Your Phone app:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Phone.
  3. Click the Unlink this PC option.

Then you can reset the app using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps & features.
  3. Under the "Apps & features" section, select the Your Phone app.
  4. Click the Advanced options link.

  5. Click the Reset button.

Once you've completed the steps, re-launch the app, set up the experience one more time, and this time, it should connect to your Android device.

Information you need to know about Your Phone

While the above troubleshooting steps can help to fix most problems setting up the Your Phone app, the experience is still a work in progress, which means that some features and functionalities are limited or they're yet to be implemented.

You won't see all your pictures

For instance, to reduce network usage and optimize performance, the Your Phone app only shows the 25 recent images from your Android device.

In addition, only the images within the "Camera Roll" and "Screenshots" folders will be available. If you're saving pictures on a different location, they won't appear on your desktop app.

Missing photos and videos from text messages

The Your Phone app is still a work in progress, and at the time of this writing, it doesn't include support for viewing or sending media in MMS messages. (In future updates, Microsoft is expected to bring this functionality.)

Inconsistent incoming text notifications

When using the Your Phone app, you'll notice that only some of the notifications for incoming text messages, but not for all of them. The reason is that when you close or minimize the app, there's a delay before text notifications appear in Action Center.

It's expected that this behavior will improve over time, but in the meantime, you can check all your incoming text using the Your Phone app directly.

Surface Laptop 2 boasts some impressive battery life improvements

Surface Laptop 2

Best answer: The battery life isn't only significantly better than the first Surface Laptop, but the Surface Pro 6, too.

Microsoft: Surface Laptop 2 ($999)

Significant improvement on the previous model

During the course of our Surface Laptop 2 review battery life was one of the key metrics we benchmarked. Using the PC Mark 8 Home Battery test, the Intel Core i5 Surface Laptop 2 came away with a score of six hours and 20 minutes.

The Core i5 2017 model Surface Laptop, by comparison, scored only five hours and seven minutes. Not only is the Surface Laptop 2 better, it's significantly better. You can expect at least a full extra hour of use from the Surface Laptop 2 over its predecessor.

It doesn't run any cooler than the original Surface Laptop, but the fan noise is fairly low, and when you consider that the Surface Laptop 2 has made the jump to a quad-core processor, it makes the results all the more pleasing.

Surface Laptop 2 handily beats Surface Pro 6

Not only is the Surface Laptop 2 a significant improvement on its predecessor, but it's also much stronger in the battery department than the Surface Pro 6.

At five hours and 25 minutes from the same PC Mark 8 test, the Surface Pro 6 outperforms the first Surface Laptop, but falls a long way short of the Surface Laptop 2.

If battery life is a key factor, the Surface Laptop 2 has the edge, and when you consider the pricing of a Surface Pro 6 with a Type Cover, the Surface Laptop 2 looks even more attractive.

Don't be alarmed by the benchmark

It's easy to look at the figures above and be a little alarmed. But you shouldn't be. The PC Mark test is designed to leverage both the CPU and GPU, and so it will always come out lower than you'd expect to see in day to day life.

Indeed, more regular computing, such as web browsing, media consumption, and work inside apps like Microsoft Office will yield a much stronger battery life. Microsoft's claims of 14.5 hours might be a stretch, but in everyday use, you can easily expect 8-10 hours from it.

Much improved

HP Spectre Folio 13

Best answer: The HP Spectre Folio is made of 100 percent genuine, durable chrome-tanned leather. You can rest assured you'll be getting the same premium look and feel you'd expect from a $1,300 Windows PC.

HP: HP Spectre Folio 13t ($1,300)

Leather that feels as good as it looks

HP switched up the current trend in notebooks by replacing the aluminum chassis with some leather. No, the entire device isn't made from leather, but you'll find a lot of it around the keyboard, as well as acting as a clam case. The rest is the usual metal construct you'd expect from a laptop at this price.

The question is — as is the case with anything you can buy with "leather"— has HP used real, genuine leather? Absolutely. The company is going all out with the Folio, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise since this notebook is part of the powerful Spectre family.

We even spent some time with the new HP tablet come laptop, and I strongly encourage you to watch through our hands-on below for a quick glance at the device in the flesh.

The only drawback to the leather is you're stuck with it since it's part of the chassis. It's also important to keep the leather treated and clean to avoid serious wear and tear, but you'll likely fall in love with the PC after unboxing if you're a big fan of premium and unique design.

Our pick

Reinventing the portable PC with leather.

HP Mindframe

Best answer: You can get the headset at Amazon for a little cheaper right now but HP also offers free shipping for everyone so the two are about even in the end.

Amazon will save you a little money

HP's list price for the OMEN Mindframe is $200, and that's what you'll find it for right now on the company's own store. Amazon, however, as is often the case, has shaved a little off that and will offer you $10 savings.

If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber and can get free shipping, that works out pretty well. Not only is it free shipping, but it's 2-day shipping! Depending on your city, you can even possibly get same-day shipping. If you want those advantages and you're a Prime subscriber, choosing where to buy your headset is a no-brainer. However, if you're not, you'll probably find yourself paying to have it sent to you.

HP offers everyone free shipping

Shipping rates from Amazon will vary depending on where you are, but HP is offering everyone who buys the OMEN Mindframe free shipping and one business day turnaround for dispatch.

Simply put that means you'll always pay $200 no matter where you are and you'll get it at your door in no time at all.

A pretty unique gaming headset

Wherever you buy from, you're getting a pretty unique gaming headset. The Mindframe achieves something that as yet, no other gaming headset has: Actively cooling your ears while playing.

As we highlighted in our review, the Mindframe is exceptionally comfortable and definitely worthy of your money.

If like me, you like to game with only over-the-ear headphones but dread the ear-muff effect that causes you to get warm the OMEN Mindframe is a terrific solution to your problem.

How to clean the HP Spectre 13 Folio's leather case

$

HP Spectre Folio

What separates the HP Spectre 13 Folio from other devices on the market is that material HP used: leather. It definitely makes a statement out in the wild, but it can be annoying to clean. In this guide I'm going to walk you through how to keep your leather-touting HP Spectre 13 clean, using nothing more than a single product and a spare few minutes.

Products used in this guide

How to clean the HP Spectre Folio 13 leather

  1. Ensure the HP Spectre Folio 13 is turned off.
  2. Fetch a clean lint-free cloth (microfiber cloths work just fine).
  3. Gently wipe down all leather surfaces with the cloth, applying a small amount of water to the cloth for marks and tougher stains.
  4. If you still have marks that refuse to budge, try adding a little soap into the mix.

That's it! We're all done and your leather should be in pristine condition. You'll want to give the leather a regular wipe down, depending on how frequently the PC is used. As noted by HP, it's important you avoid the use of cleaning products containing substances such as ethyl alcohol, ammonia, chlorine, acetone, turpentine, or other mineral spirits.

AmazonBasics microfiber cleaning cloths get the job done well without damaging the leather. As is the case with leather in general, it'll fade and change color in time, which is something to bear in mind when prepping the laptop for cleaning and checking for wear and tear.

They're also incredibly easy to use on not only the HP Spectre Folio 13, but other gadgets and products and don't cost much to replace.

Do you need to take a screenshot on Windows 10? Here are 7 ways to do it.

$
0

These are the best ways to take screenshots on Windows 10.

The ability to take screenshots of the entire or part of the screen can be useful in many scenarios. For instance, when you want to share some interesting content with others, or you need to get help when an error message pops up on your computer. Or if you want to save a copy of a form before submitting, keep proof of something, or putting together a guide like this one.

No matter the situation, Windows 10 have you covered with several easy ways to capture and save screenshots using keyboard shortcuts, hardware keys, and starting with the October 2018 Update, you can even use the Snip & Sketch app to take, edit, and share captures using social media or email.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the different ways to take screenshots of the entire screen, only from a particular active window, or a scene from your favorite game.

How to take screenshots on Windows 10

Here are seven ways to capture screenshots on Windows 10:

Taking screenshots using Windows 10

Out-of-the-box Windows 10 includes a few ways to take screenshots of the entire screen or active window.

Capturing entire screen to clipboard

  • PrtScrn (or Ctrl + PrtScrn): These keyboard shortcuts will capture a screenshot of the entire screen to the clipboard, which you can then paste on any application. These shortcuts work whether you're using one or multiple displays.

Saving entire screen to file

  • Windows key + PrtScrn: Using this shortcut, a screenshot of the entire screen will be saved to an image file. All captures using this method will save into the Screenshots folders inside the Pictures folder.

Capturing active window

  • Alt + PrtScrn: Using this combo, you can take a screenshot of an active window. The capture will copy to the clipboard, and you can then paste it on any application.

Taking screenshots using Snip & Sketch

Beginning with the October 2018 Update, Windows 10 introduces Snip & Sketch, a new app designed specifically to take screenshots and replace the old Snipping Tool.

Similar to the legacy tool, using the app, you can take screenshots on Windows 10 in a number of ways.

Capturing clips using Snip & Sketch

To take a screenshot using Snip & Sketch, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Snip & Sketch, click the top result to open the app.
  3. Click the New button in the top-left corner.

  4. Select the type of snip you want to use, including:

    • Rectangular Clip.
    • Freeform Clip.
    • Fullscreen Clip.

  5. Take the screenshot.

Capturing clips using Action Center

If you want to take a screenshot to paste on a document, you can use the new Screen snip button with these steps:

  1. Open Action Center.

Quick tip: Use the Windows key + A keyboard shortcut, or click the Action Center button in the notification area to open the experience.

  2. Click the Expand button.
  3. Click the Screen snip button.

  4. Select the type of snip you want to use, including:

    • Rectangular Clip.
    • Freeform Clip.
    • Fullscreen Clip.

  5. Take the screenshot.

Capturing using the Print Screen button

Alternatively, you can now remap the print screen key on the keyboard to bring up the Snipping tools interface to take screenshots on Windows 10.

You can manually configure this option on Settings> Ease of Access> Keyboard, and enabling the Use the PrtScrn button to open screen snipping option.

Once the option is enabled, you can take screenshots on Windows 10 using the PrtScrn key. Here's how:

  1. Press the PrtScrn button.
  2. Select the type of snip you want to use, including:

    • Rectangular Clip.
    • Freeform Clip.
    • Fullscreen Clip.

  3. Take the screenshot.

Using the "Screen snip" button or the "PrtScrn" key, the screenshot will copy to the clipboard. If you want to annotate the snip or save it into a file, you need to click the Snip & Sketch notification in Action Center.

Accessing Screen snipping tools

  • Windows key + Shift + S: If you don't want to change your settings, you can use this keyboard shortcut to bring up the Screen snipping tools to take a screenshot.

The Windows key + Shift + S was previously the shortcut to take a screenshot of a particular area of the screen using the Snipping Tool, but it's now part of Snip & Sketch.

Alongside the ability to capture clips, using Snip & Sketch, you can annotate, share screenshots, and more. You can check our guide to learn more about how to use this new experience.

While you can continue to use the legacy Snipping Tool, we're not listing it in this guide, because it's a deprecated feature, and it may stop working in the future, and Microsoft can remove it at any time.

Taking screenshots using Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge users can also take screenshots of any web page they're viewing and save it to OneNote or share it with other people using the notes feature.

To take a screenshot of a website, do the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Load the website.
  3. Click the Add notes button in the toolbar.

Quick Tip: Similar to Snip & Sketch, you can annotate the image, add notes, crop, and more.

  4. Click the Save button.

  5. Select OneNote.
  6. Click the Save button.

Alternatively, you can click the Share button to share the image with other people through email or social media.

Taking screenshots using Surface

If you own a Surface device, you can also take screenshots in a number of ways with and without the keyboard.

  • Fn + Windows key + Spacebar: This shortcut takes a screenshot of the screen and saves the image in the Pictures folder, inside the Screenshots folder.

  • Fn + Spacebar: Stores the screenshot of the entire screen in the clipboard, which you can then paste on any application.

  • Fn + Alt + Spacebar: Takes a screenshot of a window to the clipboard, which you can then paste on any application.

  • Power button + volume down: On supported devices, such as Surface Pro 6 and older models, takes a screenshot of the entire screen and saves the image to the Screenshots folder.

  • Double-click the Surface Pen top button: If you're using any Surface device, you can double-click the top button, select a region of the screen that you want to capture dragging the pen from one corner to the opposite corner. As you lift the pen from the screen, your selection is sent to a new page in OneNote.

Of course, this feature only works, if on Settings> Devices> Pen & Windows Ink, under the "Pen shortcuts" section, you're using the Send screenshot to OneNote option for the "Double-click" setting.

Taking screenshots using laptop

If you have a standard clamshell laptop, you can also use the function key to take screenshots on Windows 10.

  • Fn + Windows key + PrtScrn: Captures everything on the screen, and saves the image in the Pictures folder, inside the Screenshots folder.
  • Fn + PrtScrn (or Fn + Ctrl + PrtScrn): Sends the screenshot to clipboard, which you can then paste on any application.
  • Fn + Alt + PrtScrn: Takes screenshots of an active window and copies the image to the clipboard, which then you can paste on any application.

Taking screenshots using Game Bar

On Windows 10, you can also take screenshots of your favorite games using the Game Bar.

To capture a screenshot while playing a game, do the following:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Game Bar, and click the top result to open the experience.

Quick Tip: You can also use the Windows key + G keyboard shortcut to open the Game Bar.

  3. Under "Game capturing," click the Camera button to take the screenshot.

After completing the steps, the capture will be saved as a .png file in the Screenshots folder.

This screen capturing feature is limited to games as some apps like Microsoft Edge, but this feature may not work to take screenshots of File Explorer or desktop.

Taking screenshots using third-party apps

Although you can perfectly take screenshots on Windows 10, you can use third-party apps, as they usually tend to bundle additional features, such as the ability to set custom keyboard shortcuts, editing tools, and more.

Here's a list with a few recommendations:
