Can Xbox Series X play 4K Blu-ray?
Microsoft already has consoles on the market that can play 4K Blu-ray discs, the Xbox One X, and Xbox One S. The Xbox One X and Xbox One S both include Ultra HD Blu-ray players, which can read 100GB Blu-ray discs used to store 4K content. Microsoft's next-generation console, the Xbox Series X, will also include a 4K Blu-ray players and will be capable of watching the same movies.
What about Lockhart?
Credible rumors reported by Windows Central indicate that Microsoft is also working on a lower-end next-generation console, codenamed Lockhart, which will complement the Xbox Series X, forming a dual-pronged approach of sorts. There is the possibility that Lockhart does not include a disc drive and, if so, will not be capable of playing 4K Blu-ray discs.
This console would end up being similar to the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which also does not include a disc drive. In our review of the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, we noted that the console's idea made sense, but that pricing was the main issue.
At this point, Lockhart and its exact specifications remain unrevealed, so we'll have to wait and see. You can read everything we know about Xbox Series X right here.
