How to temporarily disable an account on Windows 10

$

0

When you need to block someone from using a shared computer, you can just disable their account on Windows 10 — Here are two ways to do it.

On Windows 10, you can add multiple accounts to share a device with other people — that way everyone can have a personal and custom space with their own desktop, browser bookmarks, and separate files.

When an account is no longer needed, using the Settings app is also super-easy to delete a user along with their settings and files, but if you only need to block someone temporarily, you won't find an option to simply disable an account. However, it doesn't mean that you need to lock the door or delete the account just to temporarily prevent someone from accessing the device, as it's still possible to use Computer management and Command Prompt to disable an account.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to disable a user account when you're sharing your PC with multiple users, and you're planning to restate access in the future.

How to disable a Windows 10 account using Computer Management

On Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you can use Computer Management to manage various aspects of an account, including the ability to restrict access to an account.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Computer Management and click the top result to open the console.

Quick tip: You can also use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut and selecting Computer Management.

  3. Browse the following path:

System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users

  4. Double-click the account you want to disable. (If the user account is using a Microsoft account, note that the name will only use the first five letters of the email address. If you want the account to use a custom name, you can refer to this guide.)
  5. Under the "General" tab, check the Account is disabled option.

  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.

Once you've completed the steps, the account will no longer be accessible, nor it'll appear as an available account on the sign-in screen.

If you want to revert the changes to enable the account again, simply follow the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to clear the Account is disabled option.

How to disable a Windows 10 account using Command Prompt

If you feel more comfortable using commands, or your device is running Windows 10 Home, you can use Command Prompt to disable or enable a Windows 10 account.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
  4. Type the following command to list all the available accounts added on your computer and press Enter:

    net user

  5. Type the following command to disable the account and press Enter:

    net user username /active:no

In the above command replace username with the name of the account you want to restrict access.

After completing the steps, the account you've disabled will no longer be accessible and it'll not be listed on the sign-in screen.

At any time you can enable the Windows 10 account again using the same instructions, but on step No. 5, use the net user username /activate:yes command.

While we're focusing this guide on Windows 10, you can also use the same instructions to disable or enable an account on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

How to get started with PC gaming in 2018

Phanteks P400

Welcome to the master platform. Here's how to get started with PC gaming.

The PC remains the best platform for gaming, whether it be for esports, graphics fidelity, and even massive multiplayer experiences. There are hundreds of thousands of titles available and digital distribution services like Steam and GOG make it easier than ever to build a game collection without leaving the house. We'll run you through how to set up and configure your PC, get started with said digital stores and get the most out of Windows 10 for all things games.

Hardware ready

Thermaltake Core P5

Before you begin with gaming on a PC, you first need to buy or build one capable of running whatever you wish to play. Unlike consoles, games released for PC have different requirements, some are more demanding than others. Depending on what kind of power the PC you'll be using packs, you'll need to adjust graphics settings accordingly, which allows you to reduce the look of a game slightly to improve performance. It's a delicate balancing act but offers more control than a console.

There are many pre-built options out there but building your own can cut some costs but you'll need to troubleshoot everything yourself. Generally speaking, you'll want to aim for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor and Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU. This will allow you to enjoy even more demanding titles at 1440p resolution and a comfortable 60 frames-per-second at the very least.

Build a capable gaming PC for less than $800

Philips Monitor

And unlike a console where a TV and living room are usually an ideal combination, for PC gaming it's all about the gaming den and smaller monitor. 25-inch panels are generally considered the sweet spot, especially when you consider 1440p. 4K isn't quite ready, regardless of what console makers and others would lead you to believe. Even a pricier GTX 1080 struggles to push content at that resolution — give it a few more years.

You'd be hard-pressed to build a PC that matches the Xbox One X for 4K gaming at the X's price point, but a PC offers so much more and is well worth the added cost.

Great PC games you don't need an expensive GPU to enjoy

Preparing Windows 10

The Witcher 3

Microsoft's latest OS is a solid piece of kit. Windows 10 not only offers excellent levels of performance in games but also comes pretty well-optimized out-the-box. You should be good to go as soon as you complete the initial OS installation but one of the most important tasks you'll need to complete is to update your GPU drivers, depending on which vendor you've chosen to go with (AMD or Nvidia):

Another good idea is to ensure you have the latest updates for Windows 10 itself and you have all drivers installed for other PC components — this aids in keeping everything working together in harmony. We compiled some other useful tips, which while aren't as important as keeping drivers up-to-date may help extract even more performance from your setup.

How to optimize Windows 10 for PC gaming

Lastly, you'll want to download Discord, which is the go-to app for gamers who wish to communicate with friends. In order to talk with them, you'll need a headset.

Full Steam ahead

GOG

Now that your PC is all configured and ready for action, you need to install some games. There are two major storefronts that are popular right now — Steam and GOG. As well as these two, you also have the choice between some publisher stores like Ubisoft's UPlay, Blizzard's Battle.net, and EA's Origin, not to mention Amazon and retailer websites for physical copies.

For digital downloads, each of the available storefronts work in similar ways. You download and install the software, create an account and attach necessary payment information, browse the catalog of games and make purchases. Any games you buy can subsequently be downloaded and installed. GOG is unique in that it allows for you to run games without DRM protection, meaning you don't have to be logged in to play games, nor do you need to have the GOG suite installed.

6 useful things you can still do with Kinect for Xbox in 2018

$

0

Even though Kinect may be dead, here are six things you can still do with the Xbox One accessory.

Earlier this year, Microsoft wrapped up production on its Kinect sensor – the company's ambitious camera and motion controller for Xbox consoles. Following a major push for the device across the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Microsoft's hopes for the device eventually fell flat, amid privacy concerns and disappointing software support.

The end is nigh for Kinect, especially with the company having recently discontinued its Kinect adapter, which allowed the accessory to be used on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Despite this, the legacy Kinect established hasn't entirely diminished, with games, apps and OS-level features still available across the console. If you're among the remaining Kinect users on the console, the device still has tricks to show in 2018.

A whole load of Kinect games

This is a somewhat obvious point to start on, though the existing library of Kinect games shouldn't be forgotten. While a lack of consistent quality titles was a major factor in the device's downfall, there are still several enjoyable games built around the accessory.

One of the differentiating aspects of Kinect was its sensors, which powered its unique motion controls. Most Kinect-integrated games leveraged these tools, with hands-free gameplay that put players at the center of the experience. Among the highlights of these were FRU and Fruit Ninja Kinect 2– games that required players to use their body to complete challenges. Other titles, such as D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die and Zoo Tycoon weren't necessarily built for Kinect, but still offered motion controls to experience the game in an imaginative way.

Alternatively, a range of games during the console's launch period supported Kinect voice commands, while still tying core gameplay to a controller. Dead Rising 3's support left players shouting "You're crazy!" at challenging foes, while Forza Horizon 2 featured a voice-controlled G.P.S and mapping system. These implementations weren't revolutionary but added additional depth for existing Kinect users.

Development of Kinect games may have come to a halt for many, though some companies continue to invest in the device. The most prevalent of these is "Virtual Air Guitar Company," a developer that still pledges to make Kinect games going forward – though it's unclear how long this can remain sustainable.

Best Kinect Games for Xbox One

Voice commands and Cortana

Of Kinect's features, arguably the most widely used has been its voice commands. Providing a sleeker (and often much faster) method of jumping between aspects of the OS, these were a great example of how Kinect can naturally fit with the console.

Some elements of the original system-level Kinect integration have been phased out, with recent revisions of the OS pushing for a more controller-focused interface. Despite this, voice commands still remain, with strict phrases to trigger shortcuts to certain apps, quickly perform certain tasks, or move around the interface.

For more natural language, the console also has Cortana – Microsoft's digital voice assistant from its PC and phone endeavors. Offering the similar base functionality of standard voice commands, with the expanded functionality that comes with Cortana, this packs more features and flexibility. And tying into the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), this also allows for deeper voice controls across apps, opening the console to smart-home devices and other third-party services. While there are clear limitations to Cortana's abilities, it still has potential going forward.

While Cortana is supported over Xbox One headsets, traditional voice commands are tied exclusively to the Kinect sensor. Even then, having an external microphone rather than a headset feels considerably more natural, making Kinect preferable even if not required.

Webcams for Skype, Mixer and more

With a high-resolution camera slapped on Kinect, the device also serves as a great webcam across supported apps. Among these is Skype, which allows for high-quality video calls, and live streaming services such as Mixer, with webcam broadcasting. This also applies to other apps available on the Xbox One which take advantage of the camera in any way.

Support for plug and play devices has been slowly rolling on Xbox One, with third-party webcams now supported on the console. While there are arguably superior cameras compatible with the console now, the Kinect still shines in both its visual quality and integrated microphone array.

Quick Xbox One sign-in

If your Xbox One is used by multiple people, Kinect's automatic sign-in feature makes it easy to instantly access your personal content. Taking advantage of its tracking abilities, the Kinect can be used to automatically sign into your Xbox Live profile when walking within the presence of the sensor. This is all handled subtly, without having to navigate menus in the process.

Use it with a Windows 10 PC

While Kinect's official Xbox One support may be limited today, the full potential of the device can be unlocked with a PC. If you managed to grab one before being discontinued, the Kinect USB adapter allows the device to also be connected directly to a Windows PC, for use with the official software development kit (SDK) offered by Microsoft. If you don't have a Kinect adapter, some you can bypass this step by using our DIY guide.

Kinect unmatched tracking abilities are the biggest draw, with innovative PC applications built around the device. Alternatively, its advanced infrared technology also means the device serves as a Windows Hello camera, adding biometric security to your PC.

How to set up Windows Hello facial recognition in Windows 10

If all else fails...

With future plans for Kinect looking grim, the feature set of the device isn't expected to grow going forward. If none of the aforementioned main features appeal to you, the device likely isn't for you. Luckily, with Kinect being a heavy device with its own complex components, it also serves as a perfect paperweight... sadface.

How to check if your PC is protected from the Meltdown and Spectre exploits

$
0
0

Here are the steps to determine if your Windows 10 PC is still vulnerable to the Meltdown and Spectre exploits, and we'll also tell you what to do if you're not protected.

A number of security researchers have recently disclosed two vulnerabilities ("Meltdown" and "Spectre") found in many modern processors. These are major hardware design flaws that attackers can exploit to access part of the memory that should remain private allowing them to steal your information (passwords, emails, browser history, and photos).

These flaws affect a large number of processors released in the past two decades, including those manufactured by Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and ARM — but it's still primarily an Intel problem. AMD has published a statement clarifying that one (branch target injection) of the two Spectre variants doesn't impact its processors, and the second variant (bounds check bypass) can be resolved through a software update. The third variant, Meltdown (rogue data cache load), doesn't impact AMD chips either due to architecture differences.

In addition, as a result of these two now famous security flaws, supported OSes, such as Windows 10, macOS, Linux, as well as many other pieces of software, are also compromised.

Microsoft has already released a patch to mitigate part of the problem on Windows 10, and now hardware manufacturers are starting to roll out firmware updates to address the other part. However, because this is a multi-step solution to properly (but not entirely) fix the problem, it can be difficult to tell if your PC has been immunized, which is why the software giant also created a PowerShell script to check if your device is still vulnerable.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to check if your device has the required system and firmware updates to mitigate the latest microprocessor security vulnerabilities. In addition, we'll look at the steps you need to follow if your computer is still not protected.

How to check if your PC is protected against CPU vulnerabilities

In order to verify that you're protected against the latest microprocessor security vulnerabilities, you can use a PowerShell script created by Microsoft:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows PowerShell, right-click the top result, and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type the following command to install the required module and press Enter:

    Install-Module SpeculationControl

  4. Type Y and press Enter if you're prompted to enable NuGet provider.
  5. Type Y and press Enter if you're prompted to confirm the installation from an untrusted repository.
  6. Type the following command to save the current execution policy so it can be reset and press Enter:

    $SaveExecutionPolicy = Get-ExecutionPolicy

  7. Type the following command to ensure you can import the module in the next step and press Enter:

    Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope Currentuser

  8. Type Y when prompted to confirm the execution policy change and press Enter:
  9. Type the following command and press Enter:

    Import-Module SpeculationControl

  10. Type the following command to check if your device has the necessary updates and press Enter:

    Get-SpeculationControlSettings

Once you completed these steps, you'll be able to determine whether or not your computer is still vulnerable to the Meltdown and Spectre security flaws.

If your machine only has the emergency patch for Windows 10 installed, which only addresses the Meltdown vulnerability, then you'll see all the requirements for "rogue data cache load" (Meltdown) set to True and highlighted in green.

Also, under the "branch target injection" (Spectre) only the software mitigation is present and set to True, but it won't show up as enabled if your device doesn't have the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) update from your hardware manufacturer.

Only after installing the emergency Windows 10 update and the required version of the BIOS or UEFI update will all the requirements under "branch target injection" and "rogue data cache load" be set to True and highlighted in green, indicating that your device is protected.

After you're done verifying the state of your device, type the following PowerShell command Set-ExecutionPolicy $SaveExecutionPolicy -Scope Currentuser to roll back the execution policy to the original state and press Enter, and then type Y and press Enter to confirm the reset.

How to protect your PC from CPU vulnerabilities

Windows Update

The update that helps to mitigate the security vulnerabilities should install automatically, but if after running the PowerShell script, you notice that your device isn't protected, there could be a problem with Windows Update or there could be an antivirus conflict.

While creating the latest patch for Windows 10, Microsoft found that some antivirus solutions may cause a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) that will prevent a device from starting. As a result, if you're running an unsupported third-party antivirus, Windows Update won't download and install the mitigation for the vulnerability.

If your computer isn't getting the update, visit your antivirus company's support website to find out if a new software update is available and follow thr instructions to apply it.

In the case that the antivirus doesn't have the patch to address the compatibility issue with Windows 10; you can temporarily uninstall the third-party antivirus. (Although, it's not recommended to keep your computer unprotected, remember that as you uninstall the third-party malware solution Windows Defender Antivirus will enable automatically.)

Uninstalling security software should be a straightforward process, but it's always a good idea to check your software company support website for specific instructions before using the steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the antivirus.
  5. Click the Uninstall button.
  6. Click the Uninstall button again.

  7. Continue with the on-screen directions to remove the antivirus.

If you have a problem with Windows Update, use the troubleshooter to fix the issue:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Troubleshoot.
  4. Under "Get up and running," select Windows Update.
  5. Click the Run the troubleshooter button.

  6. Continue with the on-screen directions to fix Windows Update.

After installing the antivirus software update, or fixing Windows Update, use these steps to install the mitigation:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Check for updates button.

After the update downloads and installs, return to the Windows Update settings page, click the View installed update history link, and verify that one of the following updates has been successfully applied on your device:

  • KB4056892 — Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update).
  • KB4056891 — Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update).
  • KB4056890 — Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update).
  • KB4056888 — Windows 10 version 1511 (November Update).
  • KB4056893 — Windows 10 version 1507 (Initial Release).

BIOS/UEFI update

In order to patch the Spectre vulnerability, a BIOS or UEFI update is required to be applied to your computer. Depending on the brand and model of your device the steps to install the latest firmware update will be different, as such make sure to visit your manufacturer support website (for example, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus) to check for the latest update and the specific instructions on how to apply it.

If you have a Surface device, Microsoft has already made available a firmware update to help mitigate these vulnerabilities on Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and version 1703 (Creators Update) for the following devices:

  • Surface Pro 3.
  • Surface Pro 4.
  • Surface Book.
  • Surface Studio.
  • Surface Pro Model 1796.
  • Surface Laptop.
  • Surface Pro with LTE Advanced.
  • Surface Book 2.

In order to check if you're running the latest BIOS or UEFI update use the following steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for msinfo32 (or System Information) and press Enter.
  3. On "Summary," check the BIOS Version\Date information.

Software update

Alongside applying the Windows 10 emergency patch and the latest firmware update to stay protected against the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, you also want to ensure to check for app updates (especially for your web browser, as it's possible to use similar techniques to compromise your information when surfing the internet).

Microsoft has already patched the latest version of Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. Mozilla protects Firefox users against these particular exploits starting with version 57. And Google is expected to release a Chrome update on January 23, which will also include Site Isolation enabled by default to add an extra layer of security.

Wrapping things up

Running the latest updates, in some cases, doesn't necessarily mean that you're automatically protected. After taking care of all the patches, use the PowerShell script again to make sure that your PC is no longer vulnerable.

Although many companies like Microsoft are quickly responding to mitigate the security issues with Meltdown and Spectre, keep in mind that these are just the first wave of updates. In the near future we're expected to see additional updates to better address these problems. However, these are complicated flaws that will ultimately require to replace the processor to fix these vulnerabilities permanently.

How to disable Microsoft Edge InPrivate browsing on Windows 10

$
0
0

You can disable InPrivate browsing on Microsoft Edge to make sure you can keep an eye on web activities on a shared PC, or if it's a requirement in your corporate network.

On Windows 10, Microsoft Edge (like in most browsers) caches online data, such as history, cookies, and internet files to speed up the experience and other purposes. However, because this data can also expose user activities (e.g., online history and search queries), the browser also provides the InPrivate experience to keep users data private.

When using an InPrivate tab, your browsing data is not stored on the device, which in terms helps you to cover your tracks. Though it's a useful feature, it may not be something suited for all environments. For example, if your company has a strict online policy, or you want to prevent users from accessing the experience to track online activities on a shared PC.

If you must disable InPrivate on Edge in your local or corporate network, you can do this in at least two different ways using the Local Group Policy Editor and the Registry.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to disable the InPrivate browsing feature in the Microsoft Edge browser.

How to disable Edge InPrivate browsing using Group Policy

On Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, the quickest way to remove the InPrivate browsing experience on Edge is to use the Local Group Policy Editor.

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Browse the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge

  4. On the right side, double-click the Allow InPrivate browsing policy.

  5. Select the Disabled option.

  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.

Once you've completed the steps, the "New InPrivate window" option will appear grayed out in the Microsoft Edge main menu, and no one will be able to start the experience.

At any time, it's possible to revert the changes by following the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to select the Not Configured option.

How to disable Edge InPrivate browsing using Registry

In the case that you're using Windows 10 Home, you won't have access to the Local Group Policy Editor, but you can still disable the InPrivate experience using the Registry.

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that editing the Registry is risky, and it can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you don't do it correctly. It's recommended to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding.

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type regedit, and click OK to open the Registry.
  3. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

    • Quick Tip: On the Windows 10 Creators Update, you can now copy and paste the path in the new Registry's address bar to quickly jump to the key destination.
  4. Right-click the Microsoft (folder) key, select New, and click on Key.

  5. Name the key MicrosoftEdge and press Enter.
  6. Right-click the newly created key, select New, and click on Key.

  7. Name the key Main and press Enter.
  8. Right-click the newly created key, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  9. Name the key AllowInPrivate and press Enter.
  10. Double-click the newly created DWORD and make sure the value is set to 0.

  11. Click OK.

After completing the steps, Microsoft Edge will continue to show the "New InPrivate window" option, but it'll be grayed out, and users won't be able to launch the experience.

If you want to re-enable the privacy feature, you can use the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to right-click the MicrosoftEdge key and click Delete to remove the configuration that prevents the use of InPrivate browsing.

How to use Windows 10 disk Quota to limit user storage

$
0

You can limit the space people can use on a shared PC, to prevent a single person from filling up the drive. In this guide, we show you how.

One of the many great features of Windows 10 is the ability to create multiple accounts to share a computer with other people. Thanks to this feature, everyone can have a space they can call their own with custom settings and separate files.

The only issue is that users have unlimited access to the available space on the hard drive to store as many files as they want, and they don't have storage limitations to install apps and games, which can cause your device to run out of space quickly.

In order to overcome this problem, Windows 10 includes a handy feature known as "Quota," which allows you to control and manage the space users can use to prevent a single person from filling up the hard drive and leaving no space for anyone else.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the steps to set storage limits using disk Quota per account or volume.

Important details

While Quota is a useful feature on Windows 10, there some details you need to know before limiting storage to users:

  • Quota is only available on volumes formatted using NTFS.
  • Quota is commonly used in corporate networks, but anyone can use it on any device, including on Windows 10 Home.
  • Quota needs to be configured per volume, not per computer.
  • Quota can be set per individual user or everyone, but you can't set limits on groups of users.
  • Quota scans the particular volume every hour to update the storage usage for each user.
  • Users with files already on the drive will have their quota initially disabled.
  • Newly-added users will start with their quotas as expected.

Although you can configure disk quota on any supported volume, it can become a little messy implementing limits using the Windows installation drive (C:). Whenever possible, you should consider enabling Quota on secondary partitions or external drives. Also, using the C: drive, the system and other files owned by the account count towards the quota limit, so plan accordingly.

How to set up Quota per volume on Windows 10

If you want to limit the available storage for all users, use the following steps:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
  2. Click on This PC.
  3. Under "Devices and drives," right-click the drive you want to limit and select Properties.
  4. Click on the Quota tab.
  5. Click the Show Quota Settings button.

  6. Check the Enable quota management option.
  7. Check the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit option.

  8. Select the Limit disk space to option.
  9. Set the amount of space you want and specify the size unit (e.g., megabyte, gigabyte).
  10. Set the amount of space before a warning is triggered to the user and specify the size unit (for example, megabyte or gigabyte).

  11. Click Apply.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Restart your computer.

Once you completed these steps, every account on your device will only be able to use part of the total available storage on the hard drive. A warning will alert users that they're reaching their storage quota, and when the threshold is reached, users will no longer be allowed to store additional files.

You can always increase or decrease the storage allowance by modifying the Limit disk space to and Set warning level to options on step No. 6.

If you no longer want to limit the storage users can use on a drive, you can use the same instructions. However, on step No. 6, select the Do not limit disk usage option, and clear the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit and Enable quota management options.

How to set up Quota per account on Windows 10

In the case that you want to set storage limit on individual users, while keeping your account unlimited, use the following steps:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
  2. Click on This PC.
  3. Under "Devices and drives," right-click the drive you want to manage and select Properties.
  4. Click on the Quota tab.
  5. Click the Show Quota settings button.
  6. Check the Enable quota management option.
  7. Check the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit option.

  8. Click the Quote Entries button.
  9. If the account you want to restrict isn't listed, click Quota, and select New Quota Entry.

  10. In the "Select Users" tab, click the Advanced button.

  11. Click the Find Now button.
  12. Select the account you want.

  13. Click OK.
  14. Click OK again.
  15. Select the Limit disk space to option.
  16. Set the amount of space you want and specify the size unit (for example, megabyte or gigabyte).
  17. Set the amount of space before a warning is triggered to the user and specify the size unit (for example, megabyte or gigabyte).

  18. Click Apply.
  19. Click OK.

After completing the steps, the users you configured storage limits for won't be able to fill up the entire drive.

If you want to disable or change the disk quota settings, you can use the same instructions, but on step No. 15, select the Do not limit disk usage option to disable or change the settings using the Limit disk space to option.

Deleting a disk quota entry

In the case you no longer need to limit the space a user can use, you can simply change the settings in the user entry. However, if you want to remove a Quota entry, this can be a challenge as the account must not be consuming any space before you can delete it.

To remove a Quota entry, do the following:

Note: It's a good idea to relocate the user files to another location temporarily, remove the entry using the steps below, and then move the files back to the original location.

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
  2. Click on This PC.
  3. Under "Devices and drives," right-click the Local Disk (C:) drive and select Properties.
  4. Click on the Quota tab.
  5. Click the Show Quota Settings button.
  6. Check that the Enable quota management option is selected and disk quota is enabled. Otherwise, you won't be able to delete any of the entries, and you'll get a "users charged with disk space cannot be deleted" message.

  7. Click the Quota Entries button.
  8. Right-click the user and select Delete.

  9. Click Yes.
  10. Select the files owned by the account you're trying to remove.
  11. Click the Take Ownership button if you want to keep the files, or click the Delete button if taking ownership doesn't work.

  12. Click Close to delete the entry.

Once you complete these steps, you can properly disable disk quota on the drive, or you can reconfigure the same account again.

Although we're focusing this guide on Windows 10, the ability to set disk quotas has been around for years, and you can also refer to these instructions to limit the space people can use on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

Mixer VOD

You can always leave your Mixer followers with some entertainment by auto-playing a video on demand (VOD) when you're not online.

Essentially, instead of leaving an offline message on your Mixer channel when you're not streaming, you can now entertain your followers or the world at large.

You can add your most recent VOD to your channel page to play whenever someone lands on it and you're offline. Here's how.

How to add an auto-play VOD to Mixer

After you finish a stream, Mixer will automatically create a VOD of your last broadcast. These build up and will be kept on your channel for 90days, but now you can keep your most recent one on your channel to auto-play every time someone lands on your page.

  1. Login to Mixer.
  2. Click on manage channel.
  3. Turn on the autoplay my most recent VOD when I'm offline option.
  4. Click save.

VODs won't display if your channel is set to host someone when you're offline, and the auto-host will override it. The VOD will only begin playing when someone lands on your channel and you're offline and not hosting.

How to use Xbox One sign-in options to improve security

Make sure your Xbox One is truly yours with these sign-in security options.

Games consoles are more feature-packed than ever, with systems like the Xbox One boasting offerings rivaling PCs and phones. And like the aforementioned systems, payments and personal information are handled onboard, meaning you'll want to acknowledge your console's security.

For Xbox One owners, Microsoft offers several methods for signing into your console that offer a balance of security and convenience. While some users may opt for ease of use in the name of accessibility, others may prefer to fully lock down their console.

Instant sign-in

Starting with the less secure options is "Instant sign-in," which as the name suggests, logs the user once the console is turned on. After configuring the primary account for the console, this profile will be immediately signed into Xbox Live without prompt for any identification.

This is the quickest solution for signing into your console, though simultaneously poses the biggest risk to security. When an Xbox One is used only by a single user, this is a valid sign-in option with little fuss. However, your console should be stored in a safe location without access from other individuals. In the case that your console is accessed, it also poses a big risk, allowing for unrestricted access to its contents.

Bottom line: Best on Xbox One consoles accessed by one user, making for the fastest-possible sign-in experience, at the cost of security.

Here's how to configure instant sign-in on your Xbox One:

  1. Sign into your Xbox One with the account you plan to change settings for.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Navigate to the Account tab.
  4. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  5. Select Change my sign-in and security preferences.
  6. Choose the No barriers tab. This will return you to the main sign-in page.
  7. Select Instant sign-in.
  8. Select Use instant sign-in. This will automatically set your current account as the default for instant sign-in going forward.

After completing the steps, when your Xbox One console is turned on, your chosen account will automatically sign in.

Controller sign-in

For those who prefer a seamless sign-in experience, but share the console among multiple users, the Xbox One's "controller mapping" feature comes into play. Once enabled, accounts can be mapped to specific controllers, causing it to automatically sign-in when this connected. For example, when two gamers use a single console, two controllers can be used, each mapped to an individual account.

While you're mapping an account to a specific controller, all account information is still solely tied to the console. Once configured, connecting a controller simply acts as a trigger for signing into a specific account. This feature can also stack with existing sign-in security measures, such as a passkey or password.

Bottom line: For those sharing a console between multiple users, controller mapping is fast and reliable.

Here's how to set up controller mapping on Xbox One controllers.

  7. Select This controller signs in.
  8. Select Link controller.

If signed out of the console, turning on the mapped controller will sign into your account. Keep in mind that accounts can only be mapped to one controller at this point in time.

Passkey sign-in

If you're looking for additional security, the Xbox One's passkey sign-in feature is most likely for you. Like any modern smartphone, a passkey is a user-defined six-digit sequence of button presses. After being enabled, this combination will be required every time when signing into the account.

While not as fast as instant sign-in, using a passkey adds a small barrier of protection without heavily delaying the time you spend gaming. This is an ideal solution for those trying to prevent people from accessing their console, whether between family members or roommates. Just make sure you don't forget those six important digits.

Bottom line: For those who want a little more security with an easy method, passkeys are the most recommended.

Here's how to create and use a passcode on your Xbox One console.

  1. Sign into your Xbox One with the account you plan to change settings for.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Navigate to the Account tab.
  4. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  5. Select Change my sign-in and security preferences.
  6. Choose the Ask for my passkey tab.
  7. Enter a sequence of button presses when prompted. As shown on screen, these button presses translate to a six-digit PIN number.
  8. Enter the button sequence a second time to confirm your entry.

Password sign-in

For the peace of mind that your console is locked down, the password sign-in option provides top-tier security at the cost of speed. When enabled, the password for your Microsoft account must be entered every time you sign into the console. Provided the password for your Microsoft account is secure, you won't have to worry about unauthorized access to your console.

While you won't be sacrificing security, this makes signing in a significantly longer process for those with complex passwords. Furthermore, two-factor authentication not supported when using this sign-in method. Some may prefer a full-length password, though, for many, this isn't a recommended option.

Bottom line: Use this to get the most secure sign-in option for your console, though don't expect it to be fast.

  1. Sign into your Xbox One with the account you plan to change settings for.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Navigate to the Account tab.
  4. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  5. Select Change my sign-in and security preferences.
  6. Choose the Lock it down tab.

Kinect sign-in

Microsoft has essentially killed its Kinect sensor, yet the device still works on Xbox One. Furthermore, when connected, its advanced tracking technology can enable facial recognition for signing in on the console. While fast and secure when it works, you'll need to keep a clear line of sight between you can the device's camera.

Bottom line: It's quick and easy, though you'll need to keep a Kinect sensor in sight to use it.

  1. Sign into your Xbox One with the account you plan to change settings for.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Navigate to the Account tab.
  4. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  5. Select Change my sign-in and security preferences.
  6. Choose the Make it fast, make it magic tab.

How to set up Kodi profiles on PC and Xbox

Kodi 17

Your family can have their Kodi their way. It's as easy as setting up some new Kodi profiles.

Your kids want to watch something on your Kodi system, but you're not so keen on filling up your add-ons list with child-friendly channels. That's fine, because just as you can with popular services like Netflix, you can create profiles for your kids to keep their stuff separate.

The process for creating Kodi profiles is not immediately obvious because it's not exactly user-facing. But it's also not very difficult, as long as you know where to look.

For this guide, we're using Kodi 17 with the stock skin. If you're on a different build, things might be slightly different.

  1. Select the settings cog on your home screen.

    Kodi 17

  2. Click on the box labelled profile settings.

    Kodi 17

  3. Select add profile.

    Kodi 17

  4. Give your profile a name and hit OK.

    Kodi 17

Each profile set up on your Kodi system can now have its own individual settings and add-ons. You can set up the new profiles to transfer everything from the main profile, just select "yes" instead of "no" when you're given this option after creating a new one.

Kodi 17

To switch between profiles you need to log off the current one. To do so, hit the power icon and select log off. You're then taken to a screen that presents all of your profiles, and it's as easy as selecting the one you want and going in to enjoy your content.

Kodi is already a terrific media center, but little touches like this one make it your media center.

Useful on the family Xbox One

Now that Kodi is available in alpha on the Xbox One the profiles features can be incredibly useful. If you're using Kodi to handle your family's media, profiles is a great way to keep everyone happy.

By setting up a profile for the kids, for example, you can separate their media from your own, and you won't need anything as drastic as separate Xbox profiles. The steps above still apply, albeit the user interface is a little different (it's just profiles not profile settings, for example).

Right now though, it seems if you set Kodi to allow you to pick a profile at boot it doesn't let you do anything at all. But it's still in alpha so it's expected to be buggy. Using it on the Xbox right now probably isn't recommended if it's something you're going to depend on, but it's going to be super useful when we get to a proper release.

Xbox party chat

Microsoft is pushing party chat to its mobile Xbox apps. Here's how to get up and running on iPhone and iPad.

To date, Xbox party chat has only been available on the console and the Windows 10 Xbox app on PC. That's soon going to change, and the feature is now available to Xbox gamers to beta test on iOS.

That requires being accepted into a test program, so for many it'll be something to wait on. Nevertheless, here's how you get your party (chat) started.

How to use Xbox party chat on iOS

Just follow these steps:

  1. Tap on the three people icon along the top bar.
  2. Tap start a party.
  3. Hit invite to party.
  4. Select the friends you want to add.

Each invited member will receive a notification on their console or PC but also on their phone, as well, when signed in to the Xbox app.

Xbox party chat

Once you're in a party, there are things you can do within the app, such as:

  • Make a party invite-only— Make it so you have to invite new members yourself.
  • Mute a party— Mutes all party audio.
  • Mute me— Tapping on yourself will give you the option to just mute yourself while hearing the rest of the party.
  • Mute others— Tapping on any other member of the party presents the option to mute that person if you started the party.
  • Open profile— Goes to either your or your party members' Xbox Live profile pages.
  • Show text chat— Party chat has text as well as voice but it will only show up upon tapping this option.
  • Remove from party/Leave party— You can kick out other members or leave yourself by tapping the relevant option.

Initially, this feature is exclusive to the Xbox Beta app, which requires access to be granted. There's no current timeline on it progressing to the main Xbox app, but you can sign up below if you're interested in testing it before it reaches the public build.

Where to buy a Windows phone in 2018

$
0
0

If you need a new phone and you don't want anything but a Windows phone, there are still easy ways to get one.

The future for Microsoft-powered smartphones is bleak. But nevertheless, the platform is still supported and will be for some time. The harder part is buying a new phone, since no one is making them anymore, and stocks aren't exactly high.

But if you know where to look you'll still be able to find one.

Microsoft

Microsoft is more keen on selling Android phones these days, it seems, but it's still a great place to get a Windows phone while they're around. The latest hot deal is the Alcatel Idol 4S for $100, which is frankly absurd value. It's a great phone, especially for that price.

You can't buy a new Lumia there anymore, but along with the Idol 4S, the HP Elite x3 bundle is still available with the desk dock, though it costs $800.

See at Microsoft

Amazon

If you can buy something there's always a strong chance you'll find it on Amazon. Fancy picking up an old Lumia 830? No problem! Prices are pretty random, but there are a lot of resellers on Amazon, selling new, refurbished and used items, and it seems like there's plenty of choice.

Newer phones like the Lumia 950 can still be had, too, as well as budget models like the Alcatel Fierce XL.

See at Amazon

eBay

As with Amazon, if there's something you want to buy there's a solid chance you'll find it on eBay. Gone are the days of buying only used products, since many merchants use the platform now as a storefront for new and refurbished hardware.

The great thing with eBay is that if there's a particular phone you want, you'll probably find it.

See at eBay

Swappa

Whether you're buying or selling, Swappa is a great place to go. There is a set list of conditions that a device must meet before it can be sold, which also gives the buyer more confidence. If the device doesn't meet expectations, PayPal's protection should handle it. Sales go through PayPal so you've got some good options if you're not happy.

And, again, the choice will be pretty varied, though the chances of landing brand new hardware are less.

See at Swappa

Craigslist

This is not necessarily the first place we'd recommend you go looking for a new phone, but Craigslist remains a popular enough way to buy and sell items. You're more limited in a sense, because you'll have to actually go and get the item from the seller, so unless you're really keen you'll be keeping to your local area.

And it's always a good idea to meet in a public place to close the sale, with people around, preferably.

How to manage Windows 10's Automatic Maintenance feature

$
0
0

Here's what you need to know about Windows 10's Automatic Maintenance feature, the steps to manage its settings, and how to disable it (if necessary).

On Windows 10, Automatic Maintenance is a feature that helps to keep your computer healthy and optimized by combining and running all maintenance tasks without impacting performance or energy efficiency.

Usually, the automated system optimization happens once a day when you're not actively using your device. However, it's possible to change the time and other settings to prevent missing a maintenance schedule because your computer was powered off, you were actively using it, or it's not behaving as expected.

In this Windows 10 guide, we explain in more detail how Automatic Maintenance works. We outline the steps to manage its settings to optimize your device at any time of your choosing, and we'll also show you how to disable the feature if necessary.

About Automatic Maintenance on Windows 10

Automatic Maintenance is just a set of related tasks scheduled to run daily at 2:00 AM by default. These tasks run at the same time in the background, but only if your computer is powered on and sitting idle. If your device is asleep and plugged into a power source, Windows 10 is also able to wake it up to run the maintenance and put it back to sleep when it's done.

During a maintenance session, the feature will run specific tasks, such as disk optimization and defragmentation, system and apps updates, security and malware scans, diagnostics, and other tasks with the sole purpose of keeping your device healthy and running at peak performance. However, the number of tasks will be different on every computer, as software developers can also build their apps to plug tasks into this feature.

The optimization process can only run for one hour a day, and if tasks aren't finished within that window, they'll stop and resume during the next schedule. The only exception is when there are tasks marked as critical, in which case, they will continue to run until they're complete even if you're actively using the device.

It's worth noting that updates on Windows 10 are more intrusive, and they'll download and install even outside the regular maintenance schedule. So you can't use this feature to disable Windows Update.

In the case your computer isn't powered on, or you're actively working on it, the schedule to run maintenance tasks will be postponed until a later time when tasks won't impact performance or energy efficiency.

How to control Automatic Maintenance on Windows 10

Although the maintenance feature works automatically on Windows 10, you can manage various aspects of Automatic Maintenance. Here's how:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click on System and Security.
  3. Click on Security and Maintenance.

  4. Expand the Maintenance section to reveal the Automatic Maintenance options.
  5. Click the Change maintenance settings link.

  6. Use the Run maintenance tasks daily at drop-down menu to select the time you want your system to perform the automated maintenance tasks.

    • Quick Tip: If you don't want your device to wake up at night automatically, make sure to clear the Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time option.
  7. Click the OK button.

Once you complete these steps, your computer will perform maintenance daily at the time you specified for a maximum period of one hour. However, if you're actively using your device, Windows 10 will skip the schedule and try again at a later time.

If you want to run maintenance immediately, you can click the Start maintenance option within the "Maintenance" section in Control Panel, but using this option will continue to run tasks even if you're actively using your device.

How to disable Automatic Maintenance on Windows 10

Typically, Automatic Maintenance is a useful feature, and you should keep it enable to maintain your computer running smoothly, but if you're experiencing problems, such as an unexpected impact on performance, sudden crashes, and other issues, you may want to disable this feature.

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that editing the Registry is risky, and it can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you don't do it correctly. We recommend making a full backup of your PC before proceeding.

Although Control Panel doesn't include an option to disable Automatic Maintenance on Windows 10, you can still accomplish this task modifying the Registry. Just use these steps:

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type regedit, and click OK to open the Registry.
  3. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\Maintenance

    • Quick Tip: On Windows 10 Creators Update and later, you can copy and paste the path into the new Registry's address bar to quickly jump to the key destination.
  4. Right-click the newly created key, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  5. Name the key MaintenanceDisabled and press Enter.
  6. Double-click the newly created DWORD and set the value from 0 to 1.

  7. Click OK.
  8. Restart your computer.

After you complete these steps, you will still be able to see the "Maintenance" section and its options in Control Panel, but the schedule will not run, and clicking the "Start maintenance" option won't do anything

At any time, you can revert the changes to enable the feature again using the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to right-click the MaintenanceDisabled DWORD and select Delete to remove it.

While this guide is focused on Windows 10, this feature isn't unique to the latest version of the OS, so you can also refer to these instructions to manage Automatic Maintenance on Windows 8.1.

Mouse mode

If you'd like to play all of your Steam games in PSVR, you can do so with Mouse mode. Some games, like Crysis 3 and Doom 3, come with built-in side-by-side support that let you play as you normally would in VR, but most games don't have this type of support unless you use something like VorpX.

The same headset window with a split view should be moved over to your PSVR by hitting Windows key + Shift + Right arrow on your keyboard until it leaves your standard monitor.

Instead of leaving the actual game window on your standard monitor, you want to also move it over to the PSVR by hitting Windows key + Shift + Right arrow on your keyboard. Once you've moved it over to the PSVR, you'll see the game appear on a large screen in front of you. You can now enjoy all your non-VR games in cinematic mode in PSVR.

Trinus PSVR is a work in progress, so there are understandably a few bugs. Here are a few fixes to some common problems.

Tracking and drift problems

When you first click Start in Trinus PSVR, ensure your head-mounted display is placed on a steady surface and is pointing toward the direction you're facing. If you don't have the PSVR on a steady surface when you first launch, it will track all over the place and you'll have a frustrating time trying to get your cursor into the right place.

Adjust the clarity of the PSVR's picture

Looking at a blurry image in VR is not fun at all. If you find that adjusting the physical headset isn't fixing things, Trinus PSVR has an IPD slider built in that allows you to adjust the picture.

  1. Launch Trinus PSVR from your Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
  2. Click the Main tab.
  3. Click and drag the slider in the IPD section. You'll likely want to half hold the PSVR over your eyes in order to see the changes. Adjust it as you see fit until the picture clears up.

Click the Main tab. Click and drag the IPD slider.

Anthem for Xbox One: Everything we know so far

Anthem is the next big franchise from renowned developer, BioWare. Here's everything we know so far, ahead of its slated release this fall.

Back at E3 2017, Electronic Arts revealed its next major franchise, "Anthem." Showcased alongside the Xbox One X, the game shows potential and is shaping up to be one of the publisher's most promising new franchises in some time.

However, after its initial E3 debut, we're now left with more questions than answers. With little information outside of a seven-minute demo, details surrounding the game still remain somewhat vague. We've brought together everything we know so far about Anthem and what to expect ahead of its planned launch this fall.

See at Amazon

Story: Venturing beyond the walls

Coming from BioWare, the renowned developer of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, Anthem marks a new and ambitious direction for the studio. In the game's world, hostile monsters rule the wilderness, and humanity has taken refuge inside a walled city known as "Fort Tarsis." Freelancers, bounty hunters bearing "Javelin" exosuits, are among the few who can venture outside these walls, forming the basis for Anthem's gameplay. Diverging from the developer's heritage solidified in narrative-driven experiences, Anthem pursues an online shared-world, built with action-adventure mechanics in mind. While a story is set to intertwine with Anthem's gameplay in some way, few details have been shared up until now.

Electronic Arts has been keen to stress that Anthem is not a role-playing experience.

However, that's not to say story won't be a notable component of Anthem – quite the opposite. Even if action lays at the center of Anthem, the developer's role-playing legacy won't be completely out of the picture. Earlier this year during a conference call with investors, EA CEO Andrew Wilson purposely guaranteed that Anthem won't leave behind "the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for," even if a new, and potentially ambitious approach may be taken in the process.

Gameplay: A world of loot to explore

While Anthem's first on-stage demonstration teased class-based gameplay, loot systems and crafting, the game's publisher, Electronic Arts, has been keen to stress that Anthem is not a role-playing experience. Andrew Wilson has previously emphasized to investors that Anthem is being created as "an action-adventure, not RPG"– assumedly putting focusing development on core combat mechanics.

So, if Anthem isn't an RPG, what exactly is it? EA's claims somewhat echo statements previously made by Bungie, with their own online shared-world shooter, Destiny. Back in 2014, the studio was reluctant to pin down a specific genre for the game – even to this day, its genre is still somewhat ambiguous. After the reveal, Anthem's influence from role-playing titles is still evident. As of right now, the game appears to be shaping up as an action RPG, taking advantage of some elements seen in massively multiplayer online games (MMOs).

The vertical-slice of Anthem gameplay showed for its reveal heavily revolved around the cooperative multiplayer features of its sandbox. Featuring scripted interactions between friends as a part of the demo, communication and teamwork were portrayed as integral to the intended experience.

Shortly after its E3 debut reveal, Corey Gaspur, the previous lead designer on Anthem, assured fans that the game will also accommodate solo players. Designed with both single-player and cooperative parties in mind, players can supposedly "enjoy an amazing BioWare story and explore an incredible open world," regardless of their allies (or lack thereof).

Exactly how Anthem will handle single-player is yet to be disclosed, though this will assumedly be near-identical to cooperative play. Like similar games on the market, we can expect shared-world content to cater for both solo players and groups. It's also safe to assume Anthem will be an entirely online experience, forcing those playing solo to still connect to game servers.

As expected from a modern multiplayer title, Anthem will adopt a Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) model for providing content post-launch.

Anthem will leverage online features significantly more than any other BioWare titles.

Live services are nothing new in the modern age, allowing dozens of games to maintain healthy player bases – sometimes years after their release. By purchasing Anthem, you'll be buying into the game's service, with future updates expected after launch. Few details have been shared on how this "live service" will develop going forward – although content updates, events and larger expansions are all common with this business model.

This also feeds into Anthem's concept of a shared open world, adding an interconnected and somewhat dynamic edge to the experience. Anthem will leverage online features significantly more than any other BioWare titles, through both gameplay and post-launch support.

As briefly teased during its unveiling, collectible loot will also play a major role in Anthem's progression system. Examining footage, instances of both new weapons and suit upgrades are among the loot offerings, obtained through both randomized drops and crafting.

The weapon unlocked during the demonstration was a Level 35 "Legendary" rifle, which points toward rarity tiers and gear progression systems, as seen in RPGs. Searching for new gear, grinding through upgrades and other progression mechanics can all be expected at the heart of Anthem's gameplay loop.

Following the abysmal launch of Star Wars Battlefront II, a game also from Electronic Arts, questions still lie over Anthem's gameplay and item economy. Battlefront II was ridiculed at launch for its "pay-to-win" approach to monetization and loot boxes, leading to widespread outrage, which even extended to government intervention. With similar purchases expected to surface in Anthem, the publisher will have to tread carefully how these are implemented. Brenon Holmes, creative director at BioWare has stated there's an "ongoing discussion" in how a loot box economy may be implemented, though details aren't set in stone.

Enhancements: What to expect on Xbox One X

Electronic Arts appears to have worked closely with Microsoft to tailor its upcoming titles for Xbox One X, and Anthem is no exception.

Electronic Arts appears to have worked closely with Microsoft to tailor its upcoming titles for Xbox One X.

Used to showcase the power of the console at Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference, Anthem will run at 4K resolution on the console, with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR). With a 30 frames per second (FPS) gameplay video feed at E3, it's also safe to assume this will be the target framerate on Xbox One X.

Upon further analysis from Digital Foundry, Anthem's supposed Xbox One X reveal points toward a "checkerboarding" technique used to achieve a 4K output. Although implementation can differ between titles, the technique essentially renders a smaller percentage of the image and estimates the remaining pixels. Reducing tax on the system for a little trade-off, this allows resources to be used on other visual enhancements.

While Anthem does appear to be pushing the Xbox One X to its limit, the game is currently among the most graphically impressive titles showcased on the console. However, as a vertical slice of the full experience, it remains to be seen how this performance translates to the final product.

Preparing for Anthem

Electronic Arts is yet to commit to a release date for Anthem, aside from the period of "fall 2018." With nearly a year remaining until its expected launch, a lot could change before release. As of right now, the game isn't even available to pre-order in the United States for Xbox One, showing it's still early days for the project. However, like many big-budget games of today, expect preorders to start at $59.99, with higher tier editions containing bonus items. As always, let us know what you think of Anthem so far, in the comments section.

How to update your Xbox One controller

$

0

Once you know where to look, updating your Xbox One controller with the latest firmware is pretty simple.

While infrequent, Microsoft has been known to release firmware updates for its Xbox One controllers in the past. Deploying fixes, adding refinements or establishing new features, these updates aim to push to most out of your existing Xbox One controller. And for new buyers of Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter, Microsoft's external solution for 3.5 mm headsets, a controller firmware update may be required too.

Despite not being mandatory to use your Xbox One controller, it's highly recommended that these updates are installed. These are the steps to quickly update your Xbox One controller and get straight back into gaming.

How to update an Xbox One controller wirelessly

For a majority of recent Xbox One controllers, the easiest way to apply a firmware update is over the wireless connection. However, due to hardware limitations, this functionality is only offered to controllers manufactured during or after June 2015. These headsets can be identified by a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the bottom of the controller, next to the expansion port.

Keep in mind that firmware version numbers also differ between controller variants. For first-generation Xbox One controllers, "2.3.2381.0" is the latest firmware version, while revised controllers with 3.5 mm jack utilize version "2.3.2385.0." Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One S controllers currently receive version "3.1.1221.0."

  1. Ensure your Xbox One is connected to the internet.
  2. Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
  3. Navigate to the Kinect & devices tab.
  4. Select Devices & accessories.
  5. Select More options.
  6. Check the box labeled Firmware version. If the box reads "No update available" your Xbox One controller is up to date. If the box reads "Update," follow the steps below to update your controller.
  7. Press A over the Firmware version box.
  8. Select Update now to begin the update. If available, an update for your controller will now download over Xbox Live and automatically install.

How to update an Xbox One controller over Micro-USB

For controllers purchased before June 2015, controllers must be updated over a wired connection. To do so, you'll need a Micro-USB cable, which is often used for older phones, cameras, and other accessories. Controllers produced before June 2015 can be identified by their lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the bottom. Among these controllers are the Titanfall, Camouflage, Midnight Forces, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Day One edition controllers.

  1. Connect your Xbox One controller to your console using a Micro USB cable.
  2. Ensure your Xbox One is connected to the internet.
  3. Open the Settings app on your console.
  4. Navigate to the Kinect & devices tab.
  5. Select Devices & accessories.
  6. Select More options.
  7. Check the box labeled Firmware version. If the box reads "No update available" your Xbox One controller is up to date. If the box reads "Update," follow the steps below to update your controller.
  8. Press A over the Firmware version box.
  9. Select Update now to begin the update. If available, an update for your controller will now download over Xbox Live and automatically install. While downloading the update, do not unplug the Micro-USB cable.

If you try to update a controller that has already been updated, the Xbox One proceeds to the success screen within a few seconds to indicate it is already updated.

How to use Xbox One Scheduled Themes

You can automatically shift between light and dark themes using the "Scheduled Themes" feature on Xbox One. Here's how.

In late 2017, Microsoft debuted a "light theme" for its Xbox One console, giving users the option to shift the OS color scheme away from its formerly darker tone. Reworking the entire Xbox One OS, the light theme favors whites and lighter colors, which makes for improved visibility in brighter environments. Alternatively, the dark theme still utilizes blacks and dark grays, which can be easier on the eyes once the sun sets.

Microsoft has followed this up with a complementary feature, known as "Scheduled Themes." When enabled, the Xbox One can automatically shift between the two themes at certain times of the day. Here's how to enable Scheduled Themes on Xbox One and calibrate the feature to your liking.

(Note: Scheduled Themes is currently limited to people running the latest Xbox Insider Program build available to the Alpha preview ring, but the feature will presumably see a wider release soon.)

How to use Scheduled Themes on Xbox One

To use Scheduled Themes on Xbox One, the feature must first be enabled on your console. This can be done using the Settings app, where you can tune the timing to your personal preferences. In its current state, scheduling must be done manually and cannot be mapped to sunrise and sunset in your region. Here's how to use the feature:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
  2. Navigate to the Personalization tab.
  3. Select Theme & motion.
  4. Navigate to the System theme drop-down menu.
  5. Select Scheduled.
  6. Set the start time for the light theme, using the field that appears.
  7. Set the end time for the light theme.

After following these simple steps, Scheduled Themes will be enabled on your console. Going forward, the light theme will be enabled at the start time, while the console will revert to a dark theme once the set period passes.

What do you think of the new feature? Let us know in the comments section.

How to enable Xbox One 'Do Not Disturb' status

$

Here's how to enable "Do Not Disturb" status on Xbox One and ignore your friends with ease.

The Xbox One packs a large portfolio of social features, with Xbox Live bridging the gap between Microsoft's gaming platforms. And while a core aspect of the console experience, sometimes constantly popping notifications get between you and your games.

"Do Not Disturb" is a feature which aims to help with exactly that, eliminating distracting notifications while on the console. Comparable to similar features on smartphones, you'll remain connected to the internet, though incoming notifications will be suppressed. System-level notifications such as Achievements will break through this barrier, but this significantly cuts the clutter that comes with Xbox Live.

(Note: Do Not Disturb is currently limited to people running the latest Xbox Insider Program build available to the Alpha preview ring, but the feature will presumably see a wider release soon.)

How to enable Do Not Disturb on Xbox One

Do Not Disturb is a feature enabled on a per-profile basis, meaning you'll need to sign into Xbox Live to enable it. Once activated for your profile, its effects will be immediately active.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your Xbox One controller.
  2. Press LB four times to arrive at the Sign in tab.
  3. Select your profile.
  4. Scroll down to the Appear online option.
  5. Press A.
  6. Select Do Not Disturb.

To other Xbox Live users, your profile will now state it's currently "Busy," including for those outside of the Xbox Insider Program. Going forward, Do Not Disturb status will remain active unless manually disabled at a later date.

How to add a DVR to Xbox One using HDHomeRun

Let HDHomeRun help you out where Microsoft can't (or won't).

In 2015, Microsoft announced plans to introduce an OTA DVR to the Xbox One, allowing you to save broadcast TV shows to a USB hard drive connected to your console. That never happened, and it was canceled\ with no indication it will ever be resurrected.

Fortunately, if you're using your Xbox One as your main home entertainment device, it's still possible to have DVR functionality, albeit not stored directly on the console or an attached drive.

SiliconDust comes to the rescue with its HDHomeRun products, which are affordable and ridiculously easy to use. Here's what you need to know.

Which HDHomeRun box you should get?

SiliconDust makes a few different models of HDHomeRun, and which one you should get will depend on your circumstances. If you're a "cord shaver," wanting to keep cable, you can get the HDHomeRun Prime which accepts a CableCARD. If you're using OTA TV instead of the Xbox One TV tuner you'll want the HDHomeRun Connect or Extend.

Check out the guide linked below for the complete comparison of all HDHomeRun products to help you decide which is right for you.

HDHomeRun Connect vs. Prime vs. Extend: Which digital tuner is best for you?

Setting up and using HDHomeRun with Xbox One

HDHomeRun

Whether you're using HDHomeRun with an Xbox, PC, tablet, mobile device or Kodi, the basic setup process is the same. You'll need a Windows PC, and in the case of the DVR, a hard drive either in your PC or attached to your network to save recordings.

The easiest way to then use it to watch TV on your Xbox One is with the official HDHomeRun app. It's a consistent experience across Xbox and Windows 10, and while it'd be nice if OneGuide could accept a wireless signal, the HDHomeRun app isn't bad.

It'll let you pause and rewind live TV, watch live channels, view previously-0recorded shows and schedule new recordings. Check out the guide below for everything you need to know about the app on the Xbox One.

The HDHomeRun is a great alternative to the Xbox TV tuner

HDHomeRun DVR

HDHomeRun DVR

Setting up the HDHomeRun DVR takes seconds and nothing more than pointing the backend software at your desired storage drive and authenticating your account so it can tell there's an active subscription.

That's the part that differs from whatever Microsoft would have been offering. For HDHomeRun, DVR is a subscription-based service but it's also very reasonably priced at $35 per year.

With an active subscription, you open up a new area of the app on your Xbox One (and other devices), as well as a record button on the main screen. You'll get a new area where you'll be able to discover content to watch, schedule recordings and manage them, and play back previously-recorded shows over the network.

The great thing about HDHomeRun is that while it uses a web connection for things like metadata and artwork, the heavy lifting is all done over your local network. Check out the guide below for how to set up and use HDHomeRun DVR on any device, including Xbox.

HDHomeRun DVR set up and hands-on

The bottom line on HDHomeRun DVR and Xbox

While this isn't quite as elegant or simplistic as what Microsoft would have delivered, HDHomeRun is probably the next best option. There's some setup cost involved with the actual box (up to the $180), as well as that $35 yearly subscription to the DVR.

But it's still a lot cheaper than cable, and it's one of the simplest things you'll ever need to set up. Once you connect everything, the software does the work and you can just relax and enjoy your TV.

9 easy ways to sell an old Surface PC so you can buy a new one

Where can you sell your old Surface PC to get some cash for a new one?

Microsoft is always looking to improve their Surface line, the latest being the Microsoft Surface Book 2. With each new Surface, many people are wondering how they can offload their old device in order to make room (and funds) for a new one. I have some good news! Surface devices are built exceptionally well and hold onto their value for quite some time.

See at Microsoft Store

Here are the best places you can sell your old Surface before the new one arrives.

Selling your old Microsoft Surface

Surface Book 2

There are a number of great spots where you can sell your old Surface device to make room and money for a new one.

Craigslist

Craigslist is a great way to sell your Surface locally. All you need to do is check a few boxes to specify what you're selling, fill in a few fields detailing your Surface, and upload a picture (optional but recommended).

You set the price so you can be happy with what you're getting, but you also have to deal with meeting up with someone to exchange goods. Make sure it's in a public place because Craigslist has a worse scammer reputation than the Canadian equivalent, Kijiji.

Sell your Surface with Craigslist

Cute, but maybe avoid pictures of your pets sleeping on your Surface.

Facebook Marketplace

The great thing about Facebook Marketplace is that you get some free advertising directed at all the people on your Friends list and beyond. You can also see — in most cases — who you're dealing with by visiting their profile. This doesn't entirely remove the scam aspect, but it will likely make you a bit more comfortable when meeting up.

It's only available in certain regions, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, however. Everyone else is out of luck. Still, it's a great way to have your Surface seen by a lot of people, and it's free to use.

letgo

If you have an iPhone or Android and are located in the U.S., letgo is a stylish way to go about your business. It features ads with a bit of writing and a large image, so you definitely want to take some nice shots of your Surface. Potential buyers just enter a keyword and their address, and they're shown a selection of options that match.

It's a lot like Kijiji and Craigslist but with more of a hipster vibe. There are no fees to pay, but you can choose to upgrade your ads to be more attractive for a small price.

Sell your Surface with letgo

Swappa

Want to expand past your local marketplace? No problem with Swappa. Sellers choose the item they're listing, create an account, and fill in the information required to sell. There is a graph that shows how much these devices have sold for on the site over the last six months, and it will even tell you when you should sell.

There is a set list of conditions that your device must meet before it can be sold, which also gives the buyer more confidence. If the device doesn't meet expectations, PayPal's protection should handle it. Sales go through PayPal, and it takes a certain, small cut.

Swappa doesn't charge sellers but featured listings can be purchased for a small fee. If you aren't having any luck selling in your neighborhood, check out Swappa.

eBay

The online auction giant eBay has been around for quite awhile, and it's a proven method of selling your stuff. It gets tons of traffic and the auction aspect of it can be exciting, but there are often some hefty fees that will come out of your own pocket after selling.

There are plenty of return policy options to make the buyer feel more comfortable, but as long as you advertise honestly, the sale should go smoothly. If you don't mind the fees or the auction format, eBay is a great way to get a lot of eyes on your Surface.

See your Surface with eBay

Amazon

Amazon is another giant when it comes to online sales, so you're pretty much guaranteed to have traffic flowing past your Surface listing. You have to pay fees to use Amazon, but setting up a listing is about as easy as possible, and you get to set your own price.

The return policy that Amazon employs for third-party sellers might be a bit too much for some. You must either provide a return address, a pre-paid return label, or you must be ready to give a full refund. Don't mind any of those options? Amazon lets you get rid of that old Surface without much heavy lifting.

NextWorth

NextWorth questionnaire

NextWorth operates a bit differently than the other options here. It's more of a virtual pawn shop than a place where you can create a listing. You search for the device you want to sell, answer some questions about the quality of the device, and get a quote for how much NextWorth will pay you for the device.

If you accept, you can receive a payment through PayPal before you ship (NextWorth pays) your Surface away. The only downside here is that you might not get the price you want, just like a real pawn shop. An unblemished Surface Pro 4 with an Intel Core i7 processor was quoted at about $190.

Windows Central Marketplace

Windows Central Marketplace

The Windows Central community is full of avid Microsoft users, meaning there are plenty of Surface devices for sale and for trade. All you have to do is follow the guidelines while posting, and your device should get a bunch of eyes on it.

If you'd like to keep the sale in-house, our Marketplace is full of honest buyers, sellers, and traders.

Windows Store Recycle for Rewards program

Windows Store Recycle for Rewards program

If you're lucky enough to have a physical Microsoft Store near you, you might be able to take advantage of the Recycle for Rewards program. You essentially take your old Surface device (or really any device) into the store, a member of the staff examines it, and you get a store credit that can be applied to a new Surface.

Any devices that no longer retain any value can be left behind to be properly recycled. Mother Nature appreciates it!

Find a physical Microsoft Store near you

Where can you buy a new Surface device?

Don't forget, any of the selling methods listed above can also be used to pick up a used Surface. However, if you want a new device, the Microsoft Store is still the best place to shop.
