How to use a desktop microphone with Windows Mixed Reality

Microphone

If you don't have a microphone connected to your Windows Mixed Reality headset, your voice commands may go astray. Here's how to fix this.

Voice commands are a big part of interacting with Windows Mixed Reality. But, by default, all audio is set to go to your headset when it's connected. That's usually how you'll want it to be since you'll either have built-in headphones or a set directly to the headset.

But if you have headphones, not a headset with a microphone, you'll probably want to keep using whatever desktop mic you have connected to your PC else lose out altogether. Here's how to make that happen.

To keep your audio coming through your headphones but use your desktop microphone follow these steps:

  1. Open the Mixed Reality Portal app on your PC.
  2. Click on see more.
  3. Select settings.
  4. Choose audio and speech from the side menu.
  5. Change the toggle next to when I wear my headset, switch to headset mic to off.

If you'd rather get audio from your speakers, not your headphones, you can set the headset audio toggle to off as well. But for the most immersive experience, it's recommended you leave it on and wear headphones.

Now, whenever you're using your Mixed Reality headset, Windows 10 will automatically switch your audio output to the headset but keep your desktop microphone set as default input. That way you can wear regular headphones and still use voice commands.

Are you stuck trying to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update? Use this guide to learn which are the most common problems and the steps to fix them.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) has arrived, and it's slowly rolling out to millions of desktops, laptops, and tablets around the world. This new release is the fourth feature update that Microsoft is making available, and it includes a new set of features and changes.

The only caveat is that feature updates are not your usual quality updates that release every other week, and the chances to come across problems during and after the installation are much higher.

Although Microsoft has been getting much better on releasing more stable versions of Windows 10 out of the gate and prioritizing which devices are getting the update first, building software that will run on countless different hardware configurations is not an easy task. As a result, it's expected that during the early days some devices (especially if you're upgrading older machines manually) may stumble upon bugs, error messages, and a number of other issues.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through a number of fixes and workarounds to successfully install the Fall Creators Update on your desktop, laptop, or tablet.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update problems and fixes

Before diving into this guide, it's worth pointing out that during the installation of a new feature update, you may come across two types of issues. Depending on the path you take to upgrade, you may see errors that are common issues that are not bugs, and you may also come across errors which could be caused by bugs.

This guide features recommendations and solutions for both types of scenarios.

How to fix Windows Update problems with the Fall Creators Update

How to fix Windows Update errors downloading installation files

About this problem

If you see the 0x800F0922 error message, it could mean that your computer isn't connecting to the Microsoft update servers, or there might not be enough available space in the System Reserved partition.

Solution

You can try to resolve this problem by making sure your device isn't disconnected from the internet. Error 0x800F0922 may appear if you're using a VPN connection. If this is the case, disconnecting the device will help to update your system.

It rarely happens, but sometimes applications, such as security software, may store data in the System Reserved partition which may prevent your device from updating.

You can use third-party tools to resize the partition and make it larger (at least 500MB).

How to fix Windows Update errors during installation

About this problem

During the installation process of a new update, you may get an error that will prevent Windows Update from installing the latest version.

Solution

While there are a number of reasons that can cause this problem, usually, you can use the Windows Update troubleshooter to reset the service.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Troubleshoot.
  4. Select the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  5. Click the Run the troubleshooter button.

  6. Click Apply this fix if applicable to resolve the issue.

In the case your device generates a 0x80245006 error, then it indicates that files required are missing or damaged. The Windows Update troubleshooter can help you to fix this issue as well.

If the troubleshooter couldn't resolve the problem, you can also try upgrading to version 1709 using the Media Creation Tool.

How to fix unexpected error during installation update download

About this problem

When an unexpected problem is found as your device is trying to download the new feature update using Windows Update, you're likely to see the error 0x80190001.

Solution

If you see this error message, you can try using the Disk Cleanup tool to delete the temporary installation files and try again, but using the Media Creation Tool is the best option to update to the Fall Creators Update.

You can use these steps to clear temporary files or to free up space on your device with the Disk Cleanup tool:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for cleanmgr and click the result to open Disk Cleanup.
  3. If you have multiple drives, select the C: drive.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click the Clean up system file button.

  6. If you have multiple drives, Click OK, making sure the C: drive is selected.
  7. Depending on the scenario, select the files you want to delete, including:

    • Temporary Files.
    • System error memory dump files.
    • Previous Windows Installation.
    • Temporary Windows installation files.
    • Windows Setup temporary files.
  8. Click OK.

  9. Click the Delete Files button to complete the task.

Once you've completed the steps, proceed to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update one more time.

How to fix USB bootable media problems with the Fall Creators Update

How to fix updates not downloading using Media Creation Tool

About this problem

If you're trying to use the Media Creation Tool to upgrade to the latest release of Windows 10, sometimes it might get stuck trying to download updates before the installation begins.

Solution

The quickest workaround for this problem is to restart the Media Creation Tool, and then proceed with the on-screen instructions as directed. However, after the application finishes downloading the files, quickly disconnect your device from the network by unplugging the network cable or turning off the Wi-Fi adapter.

Disconnecting from the network will cause your device to timeout trying to download the updates, which will cause the Media Creation Tool to skip the step and continue with the installation.

Once the device has been upgraded to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and you're in the out-of-box experience (OOBE) finishing the setup, reconnect your device to the network. Then the final thing left to do is to go Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update, and click the Check for Updates button to install any missing updates.

How to fix installation errors using Media Creation Tool

About this problem

When using the Media Creation Tool to do an in-place upgrade, you may get a DynamicUpdate error message, and even after restarting the application your device will get stuck trying to download the files.

Solution

The workaround to install the new version of Windows 10 is to launch the install process manually.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the following path:

    C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows\sources

  3. Double-click the Setupprep.exe to launch the update process again.

Once you've completed the steps, follow the on-screen directions to upgrade to the latest release of Windows 10.

How to fix problems with a USB installation media

About this problem

If you're using a USB bootable media to do an in-place upgrade or clean installation with the Windows 10 Fall Creators update, the installation may fail due to corrupted files on the installation media.

Solution

Redownload the ISO file and recreate the USB bootable media again. If you're using the Media Creation Tool, use the Disk Cleanup tool and delete the Windows Setup temporary files before re-downloading the installation files, and then use the application to create a bootable media one more time. (If you skip the Disk Cleanup step, you're likely to see the same problem again.)

How to fix update isn't applicable to your device problem

About this error

You may see this error message when trying to upgrade:

  • Error: The update isn't applicable to your computer.

This means that your computer doesn't have the necessary updates installed to support the new version.

Windows 10 always updates automatically, but if your device hasn't been connected to the internet for a while, and you're trying to use a bootable media to upgrade, you may stumble upon this issue.

Solution

Simply make sure to install the latest updates before trying to upgrade, using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Check for update button.

Alternatively, you can install the required updates manually using these instructions.

How to fix storage problems with the Fall Creators Update

How to fix storage issues during installation

About this problem

If there isn't enough available space to complete the installation, Windows 10 will fail the process, and you'll see one of these error messages:

  • 0x80070070 – 0x50011.
  • 0x80070070 – 0x50012.
  • 0x80070070 – 0x60000.
  • 0x80070070.
  • 0x80070008.

Solution

You can resolve this issue by connecting a removable storage device with at least 8GB of available space that Windows 10 can use as temporary storage to complete the installation.

Alternatively, you can use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to free up space by deleting temporary files and files in the recycle bin.

Important: If you use the Disk Clean up tool, remember not to delete "Windows Setup temporary files," because these are the files needed to install the new version of Windows 10 on your computer.

How to fix damaged or missing files during installation

About this problem

If your computer generates the 0x80073712 error message while trying to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, some of the files required to install the new version are missing or damaged.

Solution

Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to delete the Windows Setup temporary files, and use Windows Update to install the new version of Windows 10.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Check for updates button.

If this workaround doesn't fix the problem, you can try to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update using the Media Creation Tool.

How to fix software and hardware compatibility problems with the Fall Creators Update

How to fix compatibility problems during installation

About this problem

The 0x800F0923 error message indicates that an app or driver isn't compatible with the upgrade process.

Usually, the problem can be caused by the graphics driver, but it could also be an older driver installed in your computer. In addition, the error can indicate a compatibility issue with an older program not designed for Windows 10 or security software like your third-party antivirus (excluding Microsoft's Windows Defender Antivirus).

Solution

The solution to this should be a straightforward process. Install the latest update or uninstall the driver or application causing the problem. However, if your device is working properly with the current version of Windows 10, it may not be easy to identify what's causing the issue using Windows Update.

If you're seeing this issue on your device, you can use the Media Creation Tool to upgrade, and during the process, the application will let you know the driver or program causing Windows 10 to fail.

In the case that the driver is the latest available, and it's the one causing the problem, you should consider uninstalling it, then go through the installation process, and after the upgrade, you can reinstall the driver in question.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Device Manager and click the result.
  3. Expand the device category causing the issue.
  4. Right-click the device and click Uninstall.

  5. Follow the on-screen directions to finish removing the driver.

After completing the steps, use your preferred method to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

In the case that the error message can be traced to an application, make sure to check the software company support website to download the latest update. However, if there isn't a new update available, you should consider uninstalling the application and reinstalling after the upgrade.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the app with the problem and click the Uninstall button.

  5. Follow the on-screen directions to complete the process.

How to fix driver problems during installation

About this problem

If there is a problem with a device driver installed on your computer, you'll see one of these error messages:

  • 0xC1900101 - 0x20004.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x2000c.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x20017.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x30018.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x3000D.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x4000D.
  • 0xC1900101 - 0x40017.

It's worth noting that error messages listed above are just some of the possible errors, and you may encounter other errors that start with the same 0xC1900101 code.

Solution

When you see one of these error messages, depending on your system configuration, the solution may have different instructions. Here are five workarounds you can try.

Install updated driver

The quickest way to resolve this issue is to install the latest driver version, which you can download from your hardware support website.

After downloading the files, try their recommended steps first, but you can always use these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Device Manager and click the result.
  3. Expand the device category causing the problem (likely to appear with a yellow exclamation mark).
  4. Right-click and select Update Driver Software to check for updates. Or you can click the Uninstall button to remove the device and suppress the error message.

Disconnect device

Sometimes the problem will happen with the peripheral you have connected to your device. In this case, you don't have to go through the tedious process of updating the driver, just disconnect the peripheral and reconnect it after the upgrade.

In fact, you should always disconnect non-essential peripherals, such as printers, Bluetooth devices, and removable storage to help the installation go smoother.

Run System File Checker command

You can try using the System File Checker (SFC) built-in command to repair your system before the upgrade.

Alternatively, you can use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command, which is a more advanced tool to fix issues with your current installation.

Free up storage space

It could also be the case that you're getting one of these errors because there is not enough space available on your computer to complete the upgrade.

The Windows 10 installation requires at least 16GB of available space. If you're running out of space, use the Disk Cleanup tool to free up storage.

Upgrade manually

If nothing has worked, as a last resort you should try using the Media Creation Tool to perform a clean installation of version 1709.

How to fix app compatibility problems during installation

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the app from the list, and click the Uninstall button.

Then follow the on-screen direction to complete the removal. After the upgrade, you can install those applications one more time.

About this problem

During the installation process, you may get two error messages without a code, including:

  • Error: We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer.
  • Error: Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes.

These errors are general messages that usually appear as you try to install a "quality update" as well as during a "feature update," which can have different sets of instructions depending on what's causing the problem.

Solution

The quickest way to find out the cause of the issue is to view the update history log to see the specific error.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Update history link.
  5. Click the link for the update that failed to install and see the error message.

Once you've identified the error, you can use the Windows Central forums, or use your preferred search engine to fix this problem.

How to fix hardware requirements errors during installation

About this problem

Usually, if you're already running Windows 10, version 1709 should also work on your device. However, depending on your system hardware configuration, your device may not meet the minimum requirements, and you'll come across one of these error messages:

  • 0xC1900200 – 0x20008.
  • 0xC1900202 – 0x20008.

Solution

Check that your device has the minimum hardware requirements to install Windows 10.

  • Processor: 1GHz processor.
  • Memory: 2GB for 32 bit or 64 bit.
  • Storage: 16GB for 32 bit or 20GB for 64 bit.
  • Graphics: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.
  • Display: 800 x 600.

While most devices won't be affected by hardware requirements, it could be a problem on low-end systems. Typically, the problem is RAM, which you can upgrade to install the new version, but it might also be time to just buy a new computer.

How to fix Store problems after installing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

About this problem

After installing the Fall Creators Update, a small number of users have been reporting problems with the Microsoft Store app. In the Feedback Hub app, users are saying that the Store will no longer start correctly showing a "Something bad happened - Unknown layout specified in manifest" error message.

A Microsoft engineer from the Store team said that they're investigating the problem, but the company hasn't acknowledged this as an issue with Windows 10.

Solution

Solution 1: It appears that users affected by this problem are those running Windows 10 outside the United States, and it's been suggested that simply changing the region will temporarily address the problem until there is a permanent solution.

You can change the Microsoft Store region using these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Click on Time & language.
  3. Click on Region & language.
  4. Under "Country or region," select the country you want to use from the drop-down menu.

Once you've completed the steps, try opening the Store again, and now it should start working again.

Solution 2: If you're experiencing problems with the Microsoft Store, you can also reset the app using the Settings app or using the WSReset command to clear the cache (try both).

In order to reset the Microsoft Store app do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the Microsoft Store app.
  5. Click the Advanced options link.
  6. Click the Reset button.

After completing the steps, open the Store app again, and you should no longer get the "Something bad happened - Unknown layout specified in manifest" error message.

If you're still having an issue with the Store, using the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command, type wsreset.exe, and click OK. As you run the command, the Store data will reset, and app you launch again.

Solution 3: Alternatively, you can also use the Windows Store Troubleshooter to fix most common problems with the app. You can refer to this guide to repair the Microsoft Store on your PC.

How to fix Mail not syncing problem with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

How to properly install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Although the transition to a new version of Windows 10 should be a simple process, because creating an OS that runs on millions of devices is complex, problems are always expected (at least) in the early days.

However, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the chances of errors as you install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Create backup

Windows 10 by design has a mechanism to automatically roll back any changes during the installation in case something goes wrong. However, you can't expect the feature to work every time, which is why you should always have a recovery plan that involves creating a backup of your system before trying to install Windows 10 version 1709.

If the installation process goes south, you can use the backup to revert the changes in minutes. You can use our step-by-step instructions to create a full backup of Windows 10.

Uninstall apps

An installation of a new release of Windows 10 may fail as a result of an app that is not compatible. The best way to avoid these problems is to uninstall any application you may think will cause problems (such as older desktop [win32] and security apps) before starting the upgrade process.

Uninstalling apps on Windows 10 is a straightforward process, just follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the app you want to remove and click the Uninstall button.

Once you clicked the Uninstall button, simply follow the on-screen directions to complete the process. If you have more than one app that's causing problems, repeat the steps mentioned above to remove them.

While we're mentioning to remove your antivirus, it's assumed that you understand that it's not recommended to have your device unprotected.

If you're using the Windows Defender Antivirus, you can use these steps to disable it:

  1. Open Windows Defender Security Center.
  2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click the Virus & threat protection link.

  4. Turn off the Real-time protection toggle switch.

After the upgrade, Windows Defender Antivirus will activate again automatically, or you can always install your preferred antivirus again.

Windows Firewall may also cause problems during a feature update installation, but you can always temporarily disable it using these steps:

  1. Open Windows Defender Security Center.
  2. Click on Firewall & network protection.

  3. Click the Private (discoverable) network link.
  4. Turn off the Windows Firewall toggle switch.

  5. Click the Public (non-discoverable) network link.
  6. Turn off the Windows Firewall toggle switch.

Stop blocking updates

If you're trying to download the new version using Windows Update, and you're running Windows 10 Pro, you also want to check that you're not blocking the Fall Creators Update from downloading on your computer.

You can check that your device is not blocking the update using the following steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & security.
  3. Click the Advanced options link.

  4. Under "Choose when updates are installed," make sure that settings are configured to Current Branch and 0 days for both of the deferred options.

Also, make sure that the Pause Updates toggle switch is turned off.

On Windows 10, a device that uses a metered connection will be excluded from getting the new release. If you have a limited internet connection, make sure you have enough data in your plan or connect to an unlimited network connection and disable metered connection for your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network adapter.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Security.
  3. Click on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

  4. Click the network connection you're using.
  5. Turn off the Set as metered connection toggle switch.

Remove non-essential drives

Sometimes your computer won't be able to upgrade to a new version, because of hardware or driver compatibility problems with connected peripherals.

Before installing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), it's a good idea to disconnect peripherals that are not essential during the process. This means that you should disconnect removable storage devices like USB flash and hard drives, SD cards, printers, scanners, and Bluetooth devices.

You only need an internet connection, display, keyboard, and mouse to upgrade your system. After the installation, you can reconnect your peripherals.

Record special settings

Users have complained in the past about losing settings after installing a new version of Windows 10. If you're using a special configuration on your device, you should record it in case you need to re-apply the same configuration.

Typically, you want to record settings, such as default applications and privacy settings, Registry tweaks, and policies configured using the Local Group Policy Editor.

Perform a clean installation

When nothing else has worked, and you still can't install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you can upgrade your system by doing a clean installation.

The process of performing a clean installation involves wiping the primary hard drive of your computer, deleting the current installation, settings, apps, and personal data, and then reinstalling Windows 10 with the Fall Creators Update.

In order to go through this process, you'll need to download the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable media that you can use to start your device to install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. You can check our guide to get the step-by-step instructions to do a clean installation of Windows 10 on your computer.

Wrapping things up

While every new release of Windows 10 is meant to improve and address the shortcomings of the previous version, keep in mind that it's not easy to build a bug-free OS, and initially there are chances that you may come across issues during and after the installation.

Microsoft is aware that unexpected problems may occur, which is why the company always begins rolling out the update at a slow pace to devices that are known to work with the new version first and then pushes it to other devices only when the update is ready.

If you're planning to jump to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update as soon as it comes out, remember that the best way to upgrade is to wait until it's automatically offered to you through Windows Update to minimize the risk of problems.

When installing the new version, if you experience any errors, bugs, or a unique issue that you're able to figure out, you can help other users by noting the problem and solution in the comments. Or better yet, you can use the Windows Central forums to share the knowledge or ask for help.

How to allow updates over metered connections on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

$

You can now set your device to download updates automatically over metered internet connections in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Here's how.

Windows 10 includes a feature that allows you to configure a network connection as metered. This option comes in handy when you're connected using a limited data plan, and you want to reduce usage to prevent going over the data cap.

However, the feature prevents updates from downloading and installing, which over time can make your device vulnerable to malware, and it blocks your system from getting performance enhancements.

Of course, you can always install updates manually, or temporarily disable a metered connection, but the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update introduces a new option that allows you to set a network connection as metered while letting you keep your device secure and updated with automatic updates.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the steps to continuously keep your computer updated over a metered connection using the Settings app and the Group Policy Editor.

How to allow updates of over a metered connection using Settings

If you must use a metered network connection, but you still want to get updates, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Advanced options link.

  5. Under "Pause Updates," check the Enabling this policy will automatically download updates, even over metered data connections option.

Once you complete these steps, your device will continue to have restricted access to the internet, but updates will be allowed to download automatically as soon as they're released.

How to allow updates over a metered connection using Group Policy

If you're running Windows 10 Pro, you can also manage Windows Updates over metered connections using the Group Policy Editor.

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Browse the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Update

  4. On the right side, double-click the Allow updates to be downloaded automatically over metered connections policy.

  5. Select the Enabled option.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.

After completing these steps, Windows 10 will still conserve data, but as soon as a new updates are available they'll download over a metered connection.

It's important to note that using this option may cause additional charges depending on your data plan.

9 Best Ways to Keep Your PC Secure

Best Ways To Keep Your PC Secure

How do you ensure your PC remains secure?

Modern PCs are now pretty much synonymous with the internet, and the internet is also associated with a wild world of hackers, threats, and scams. If you know what it's like to deal with a PC that's in trouble because of a lack of security, you likely never want to experience it again. Even if you haven't yet had to deal, you'll have a much better chance of keeping your PC secure if you follow these tips.

1. Ensure Windows Defender is operating properly

Windows Defender is working.

The Windows Defender Security Center is a native Windows 10 app that includes an antivirus, firewall, and more. These tools are designed to keep unwanted malware from getting onto your computer, to cleanse your PC when an infection occurs, and to keep malware that has made it onto your PC from communicating with the open internet.

There are, of course, plenty more antivirus options out there, but Windows Defender is a strong option. No antivirus is 100-percent effective, but it should give you some peace of mind knowing that there's a barrier between you and ruin. Without antivirus, consider the front door to your home remaining unlocked while a riot takes place just outside.

Be sure to scan any new files with the antivirus software, frequently scan your entire PC, and always keep your antivirus software updated to ensure security definitions are current.

2. Update your PC

This PC is up to date.

Windows 10 updates often include the latest security patches, and they'll ensure all elements of your PC can work together properly. If your PC software is several months out of date, the risk of having someone walk in unencumbered is much higher.

Best practice is to set your PC to install Windows 10 updates automatically. You can always check manually to see whether or not your PC is up to date. Not sure how? We have a guide for that.

How to get the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

3. Encrypt and back up your files

Using EFS encryption

Not only should you worry about threats coming from the internet, you should also be wary of physical threats, when, for example, you leave your laptop unattended in a coffee shop while you grab your order from the counter. You return, and the laptop is gone.

Yes, you should have a password in place that must be entered each time you boot the PC. Yes, the password should be strong. However, you should also consider encrypting and backing up your files. Even if someone has the means to get around your password, having your sensitive data in an encrypted vault will stop them in their tracks.

We've written plenty about Windows 10 encryption, including what it is, how it works, how to set it up, and the best options when it comes to software.

4. Be wary when opening email attachments

Even if you take the steps needed to keep your PC secure, your friends and colleagues might not. This problem becomes your problem once malware takes over an email account, sending out messages containing attachments that harbor an infection ready for a new host.

If you receive an unsolicited email that contains an attachment, it's not a bad idea to reach out and ask about its contents. The sender might not have any idea that emails with attachments are going out.

5. Use different, strong passwords for different services

Enpass

As we're lately seeing, many major companies are suffering from security breaches that affect their customers. These security breaches often release passwords related to usernames and email addresses, and anyone with this information can essentially access the other services you signed up for with the same credentials. That is unless you use a different password.

Passwords need to be strong and contain capital letters, numbers, and other symbols in no particular order. A different, strong password for each service makes them difficult to remember, so we recommend using a password manager.

See the best password managers for Windows 10

6. Don't fall for phishing scams

Many malicious pop-up ads or websites will attempt to pull information out of you that you would never otherwise divulge. There are plenty of phony Microsoft tech support pop-ups that want you to sign in with your email address and password associated with your account so that the malware on your PC can be fixed. Here's the thing: there's no malware, and Microsoft tech support isn't reaching out to help you.

Even if you receive a phone call saying it's Microsoft support, believe us: the company has better things to do than scan every Windows 10 PC for malware. Never type your password into a field you didn't prompt, and otherwise never give up too much information to a number you didn't call. You never know how far your mother's maiden name can go when answering security questions.

7. Let Edge's SmartScreen Filter do its job

SmartScreen in action

Microsoft's Edge browser has a built-in SmartScreen Filter that analyzes in real time whether or not a website you're viewing is attempting to offer you malware. It works by comparing the site to a list of known threats and will effectively shut things down if it finds a match.

The SmartScreen Filter should be enabled by default in Edge. If you're attempting to view a website or download a file that you're absolutely certain is safe but is nevertheless blocked, there is a way you can bypass the filter. Remember, this is at your own risk.

How to bypass or disable Microsoft Edge's SmartScreen Filter

8. Only download files from trusted sources

Just because SmartScreen doesn't pick up a website or file as malicious that doesn't mean there isn't a risk. If you're, say, attempting to download some sort of file from a website with a long URL with plenty of consonants in a row (and that doesn't end in .com), you might be putting yourself at risk.

As a rule of thumb, always try to download files from trusted websites.

9. Use a VPN for public Wi-Fi

VyprVPN

Public Wi-Fi is a great convenience. You can head over to a local cafe with your laptop in hand and not worry about being cut off from the internet. Likewise, you can check into a hotel and immediately connect, usually for free.

The problem here is that open, public Wi-Fi is not secure. Its unencrypted status means that anyone with the means could be potentially spying on your traffic. The solution here is a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs are essentially encrypted tunnels that shuttle your data between your PC and the open internet, removing the issue of an open Wi-Fi connection.

We've written a lot about VPNs already, so be sure to check out these links for much more information.

How to fix the most common Windows Mixed Reality problems

Having problems with Windows Mixed Reality? Here's how to fix the most common issues.

Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) is here, and users all over the globe are enjoying this new form of computing thanks to immersive headsets from Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and soon Samsung. Like any platform, there are bound to be some bugs that attempt to spoil your experience. Let's take a look at some of the most commonly reported problems and how to fix them.

See at Microsoft Store

Your PC says it can't run Windows Mixed Reality

WMR PC Check app

You went out and purchased a PC just for WMR, and now it's saying that it doesn't have what's required to run it. Here's the thing: you know your PC meets the minimum requirements.

Before you box everything back up and return it to the store, there are a few things to check. First, ensure the Fall Creators Update is installed on your PC. Next, ensure your GPU's drivers are updated. The best place to find these updates is on the manufacturer's website.

If everything is updated and your PC is still telling you it can't run WMR, give the Windows Mixed Reality PC Check app a go; it will tell you what changes are required.

Your headset isn't displaying anything

Your PC is updated, the WMR software is installed, and your headset is plugged in. Unfortunately, you can't see anything when you place it on your head. Check the cable running from the headset; is everything snugly plugged in where it should be plugged in?

The HDMI port must be either version 1.4 or 2.0, and the USB-A port must be 3.0. If you only have a Mini DisplayPort, it must be version 1.2, and you must use a proper adapter. Likewise, if you only have a USB-C port, it must be Thunderbolt 3, and you must use an adapter. Proper adapters include:

If your PC has a dedicated GPU, ensure the HDMI cable is plugged into the correct port. Your motherboard might also have an HDMI port, which, in this case, is the wrong one. Also ensure that the USB cable is plugged into a USB 3.0 or newer port. The WMR headset will not work with a USB 2.0 port.

This flowchart directly from Microsoft should help you nail down an HMD issue if the problem persists.

You're seeing error codes pop up

Seeing an error code isn't necessarily a bad thing; it will usually point you directly to your problem, saving time and unnecessary steps along the way. Here are some common error codes and what they mean.

Error 2181038087-4

Error 2181038087-4

This error signifies that the cameras in your headset did not start up and are thus not tracking. Unplug the headset, count to ten, and plug it back in. If the problem persists, also try restarting your PC.

Error 2181038087-11

This error usually means that your CPU isn't up to snuff. Trying running the Windows Mixed Reality PC Check app to confirm. If it is your CPU, it's time to upgrade or get a new PC.

Error 2181038087-12

This error will appear if the driver in charge of your USB port that WMR is plugged into isn't from Microsoft. Here are the steps required to resolve this issue.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Device Manager.

Right-click the Start button. Click Device Manager.

  3. Click the dropdown arrow next to Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Click any driver that includes the words eXtensible Host and doesn't also mention Microsoft.

Click the dropdown arrow. Click a driver.

  5. Click the Uninstall button.
  6. Click Uninstall.

Click the Uninstall button. Click Uninstall.

Your virtual floor is not where it should be

Inside WMR, you might notice that the floor isn't where it should be, like closer to your knees than your feet. If this is the case, a Room Adjustment app is available within.

Just bring up the Start menu within WMR, choose Room Adjustment, place the app somewhere in WMR Home, and follow the on-screen steps to adjust the floor.

Your headset is having problems with tracking

When using WMR in a room-scale situation, this problem is especially frustrating, as it can lead you to bash your head into something your headset doesn't pick up because it's so far behind in tracking.

To ensure your headset doesn't lose tracking, keep the lights on in your VR room. The cameras need to be able to see what's around you, so you won't be able to play in the dark.

If you see an error message pop up saying "I've lost my bounds," you'll no doubt want to re-run the boundary setup. It's possible that some furniture or object were moved, and the headset is having a hard time adjusting. Here's how to run the setup.

  1. Launch the Mixed Reality Portal from the Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
  2. Click the Boundary button.

Launch the Mixed Reality Portal. Click the Boundary button.

  3. Click Run setup.
  4. Click Set me up for all experiences and follow the on-screen steps.

Click Run Setup. Click Set me up for all experiences.

In the event of the HMD's display completely freezing in place, restart the Mixed Reality Portal and try again. If the problem persists, restart your PC.

Your headset's image is stuttering

A stuttering image inside the HMD usually means a GPU problem. It's possible that your GPU doesn't quite have enough power to properly run the app (especially common during games), or your GPU drivers might be out of date.

This could also be a tracking problem, so ensure there is plenty of light in the room. If you keep seeing stuttering, unplug the headset, restart your PC, and try everything again.

Your headset's display shows a black border

When attempting to enjoy a game or other intensive app, you might see black borders appear around the headset's display. This is a sign that your PC isn't quite powerful enough to run the app properly.

To get rid of the border, you can reduce detail settings within the particular app or within the WMR settings. Here's how to do the latter.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings.

Right-click the Start button. Click Settings.

  3. Click Mixed reality.
  4. Click Headset display.

Click Mixed reality. Click Headset display.

  5. Click the dropdown menu below Visual quality.
  6. Click a quality option.

Click the dropdown menu. Click a quality option.

This display in your headset is blurry

The problem of a blurry image is quite common in VR, and it usually has something to do with interpupillary distance (IPD). IPD measures the distance between your eyes; if this number isn't correctly calibrated, you'll likely see a distorted image and will eventually suffer eye strain. To determine your IPD, measure the distance between your left and right pupils using a ruler and mirror.

  1. Hold the ruler over your nose so that it's just below your eyes.
  2. Close your left eye.
  3. Look directly into your right pupil and line the end of the ruler up to the center of your pupil. From this point on, don't move the ruler.
  4. Open your left eye and close your right eye.
  5. Look directly into your left pupil and note the number in millimeters.

Now that you have an IPD measurement, you can change it manually within the WMR settings.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings.

Right-click the Start button. Click Settings.

  3. Click Mixed reality.
  4. Click Headset display.

Click Mixed reality. Click Headset display.

  5. Click the measurement field in the Calibration section.
  6. Type an IPD value.

Click the measurement field. Type an IPD value.

Your headset's view is tilted

You're able to operate inside WMR just fine, except the entire environment is tilted one way or the other. While you could just tilt your head the entire time, there is a fix to get everything level again.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Mixed reality.

    Click Settings. Click Mixed reality.

  4. Click Environment.
  5. Click Clear environment data.

Click Environment. Click Clear environment data.

You can't create a proper boundary

Creating a boundary in your VR space doesn't need to be difficult; here are some tips if you're having issues getting it right.

  • Make sure your space is at least three meters by three meters.
  • Don't trace too closely around furniture or other objects. Try to create a simple box.
  • Keep the headset in front of you, facing your PC.
  • Only ever trace over the same spot once.

When tracing your boundary, always try to leave a bit of space between the real and virtual borders of your VR area. This ensures that in the heat of the moment you will have a bit of a buffer zone if you dive out of the way and can't react in time to keep from hitting a virtual boundary.

You can't click anything in Mixed Reality

To quickly switch input between your physical desktop and the view inside WMR, you can use the Windows Key + Y shortcut on your keyboard. If input is set to WMR, you'll see a blue bar at the top of your physical desktop. If input is set to the desktop, the blue bar disappears.

When you can't click anything inside WMR, try toggling the input with the Windows Key + Y shortcut.

Your controllers aren't showing up in Mixed Reality

Your controllers aren't showing up in Mixed Reality

This problem likely has to do with proper pairing. We've already written a guide on this topic!

How to connect Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers

Your controllers are stuck in a reboot cycle

Some users have experienced an issue where their motion controllers were stuck in a cycle of turning on, vibrating, then shutting off. This issue likely has to do with the batteries being (nearly) dead. If you try new batteries and the problem persists, follow these steps to reset the controllers to their factory state. Before beginning, ensure the controllers have fresh batteries but are powered off.

  1. Open the controller's battery cover.
  2. Press and hold the pairing button. It is located below the batteries.
  3. Press and hold the Windows button for five seconds.
  4. Release both buttons simultaneously. The process of resetting should take about 15 seconds.
  5. Pair your motion controllers with your PC.

To make adjustments, follow these steps:

  1. Open settings on your PC.
  2. Click on Mixed Reality.
  3. From the sidebar, select headset display.

From here, you can alter two things: The quality of the visuals, and the calibration. In particular, you'll want to look at the latter, but it's also worth seeing if setting the quality higher makes a difference. The levels range from low to very high (beta) and by default will be set to automatic. However, your system may underestimate how good Mixed Reality can look.

Mixed Reality

The calibration tool changes virtual distance, and by default it is set to 65 mm. There's no "right" or "wrong" setting here as everyone is different, and the only way to get it right for you is to play with the slider. Move it up or down a few millimeters at a time to see what difference it makes. If it's still not right, keep going.

This process is more complicated than just making an adjustment on the headset, but having a tool in the OS means all headsets can be adjusted in the same way. It'll take some time to get right, but keep at it until your eyes are dancing with glee at the crisp, focused images in front of you.

How to reset data usage stats on the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

$
0
0

Are you using a capped internet connection? In this guide, we'll show you the steps to clear the Windows 10's Data Usage stats to track more accurate information.

Windows 10 users connected to a limited internet connection have to regularly monitor their data usage to prevent going over their current plan. Usually, users turn to the built-in "Data Usage" feature in the Settings app, which tracks network consumption for Windows Update, services, and apps.

Although the feature automatically resets the stats every 30 days, those 30 days might not line up with your data plan's billing period, rendering those default stats useless to you. Starting with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), the users can now reset the stats at any time to track their data usage over a period that makes more sense for them.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to quickly reset data usage statistics without having to resource to complicated workarounds.

How to reset network adapter data usage

To reset the data usage statistics on Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Internet.
  3. Click on Data usage.
  4. Click the View usage details link.

  5. Click the Reset usage stats button.

Once you've completed the steps, the data counters will reset and continue track network activity as a rolling total of the last 30 days.

If you're using a limited data plan, it's also recommended to set your network adapter as metered to have more control over your data usage and to avoid extra charges.

How to use an Xbox One controller with Windows Mixed Reality

How do you use an Xbox One controller with Windows Mixed Reality?

The time we've had so far with Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) has been quite enjoyable, thanks to plenty of apps and a relatively simple setup. If you received motion controllers with your headset, you're no doubt enjoying some truly immersive VR, but there are still situations where an Xbox One controller makes more sense. If you're wondering how to use an Xbox One controller with Windows Mixed Reality, just follow this guide.

See at Microsoft Store

How to pair an Xbox One controller with wireless adapter

First-generation and Elite Xbox One controllers do not support Bluetooth, so you will need to use a wireless adapter (about $25) that plugs into your PC via USB-A. If your Xbox One controller didn't come with an adapter, you can buy them separately.

See at Microsoft Store

Now that you have a wireless adapter, follow these steps.

  1. Plug the wireless adapter into a USB-A port on your PC.

How to pair an Xbox One controller with Micro-USB cable

Using a Micro-USB cable

If your PC doesn't support Bluetooth and you don't have a wireless adapter, the next best thing is to connect your controller via Micro-USB cable. All you have to do is plug in the controller, and your PC will automatically recognize what's happening and take the necessary steps to pair the device.

The only issue here is that there's another cord running from your PC to you, and you're busy having fun in VR. The less cables the better in this scenario, so definitely do what you can to get a wireless connection in order.

Using an Xbox One controller with Windows Mixed Reality

As long as you've properly paired your Xbox One controller with your PC, whether with a wireless adapter, Bluetooth, or cable, WMR should automatically pick it up when you launch the Mixed Reality Portal.

If you're in your headset yet can't click anything with the controller, remove the headset and have a peek at your physical monitor. Do you see a blue bar at the top? If not, it's likely that input is switched over to your regular desktop. Use the shortcut Windows Key + Y on your keyboard to switch input over to WMR, and you should be good to go.

How to move games, apps, and settings to a new Xbox One X

$

0

Following the latest Xbox One update, it's now easier than ever to move to an Xbox One X. Here's how to move games, apps, and other settings.

As the next generation of the Xbox family, the Xbox One X maintains full backward compatibility, supporting the same games, apps, and accessories you used with your original device. And while moving to an entirely new console, that doesn't mean you need to abandon all your previous installations.

While redownloading your favorite games is a valid way of handling the move, the Xbox fall update rolled out a variety of new features to ease the transition. With these new tools, it's now simpler than ever to transfer content and settings between devices, in a relatively streamlined manner. These are the options available to move your Xbox One games from an existing console over to the new Xbox One X.

Note: To take advantage of these features, your console must be updated to the latest version of the Xbox One OS. Once your console is next connected to the internet, this update takes place automatically.

Transfer content over a local network

One of the latest (and most impressive) additions in the Xbox fall update was the "network transfer" feature, which allows content to be moved between consoles using a local network. Two consoles can now be connected over a wireless or wired connection, to remotely transfer games and apps.

To take advantage of network transfer, you'll need to have both your old Xbox One console alongside your Xbox One X, with active internet connections. After enabling the feature on the source console, your Xbox One X can fetch any existing installations, alongside their save data. Furthermore, if you chose to install 4K updates ahead of time, these will also be transferred across.

For a step-by-step breakdown of network transfer, take a look at our guide on transferring installations over a local network.

How to copy Xbox One games and apps over a local network

Bulk transfer using an external drive

While external hard drive support is an existing Xbox One feature, the latest Xbox update introduced further flexibility with a new "bulk transfer" option. Unlike previous implementations, where games and apps had to be moved one at a time, installations can now be transferred between locations in a single sweep.

Using the feature, games and apps can be moved to any supported external hard drive in bulk and still played on the console. When it comes to upgrading to your Xbox One X, simply unplug the hard drive and connect it to the new device, where installations will be automatically recognized.

This method is especially useful for those unable to have both Xbox One consoles connected simultaneously. In theory, this could be used to offload installations before the release of the Xbox One X, allowing you to secure more cash when selling your console.

For a full breakdown of transferring Xbox One games in bulk, check out our step-by-step guide on using external hard drives between devices.

How to move Xbox One games to an Xbox One X using an external hard drive

Back up system settings

With the move to a new console, not only can your games and apps need to be moved – various system-wide preferences are also transferable. This feature allows users to back up their account and system-wide preferences and quickly deploy them on a new console.

To take advantage of the tool, navigate to "Back up my settings," found underneath the System tab of the Xbox One's Settings app. From here, you'll be able to back up your system preferences to an external hard drive with a single button press. Options are also available to set a regular backup, to ensure your preferences are saved going forward.

To take advantage of your backup, a prompt will be displayed as a part of the Xbox One X's setup experience. By inserting the drive, a majority of notable system preferences will be automatically rolled out, easing the move with some minor tweaks. Among the included settings are sign-in and security preferences, as well as network, accessibility and personalization settings.

How to remove 'Give access to' in the context menu on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

$

If you don't share files on a network, use this guide to remove the "Give access to" option from the context menu in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

The Fall Creators Update allows you to quickly share files and folders with other users on a network using the "Give access to" option in the right-click context menu.

Using the feature, you can easily access a number of options to set network permissions, stop sharing elements, and even create or join a homegroup. However, if you never use this feature and you feel the menu is getting too cluttered, you can use the Registry to remove it.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the steps to remove the new "Give access to" option from the right-click context menu.

How to remove 'Give access to' context menu option

If you want to remove the new sharing option from the context menu on Windows 10, use the following steps:

(Warning: This is a friendly reminder that editing the registry is risky, and it can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you don't do it correctly. We recommend making a full backup of your PC before proceeding.)

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type regedit, and click OK to open the Registry.
  3. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions

  4. Right-click the Shell Extensions (folder) key, select New, and click on Key.

  5. Name the new key Blocked and press Enter. (If the key already exists, you don't need to recreate it.)
  6. Select the Blocked (folder) key, and right-click on the right side, select New, and click on String Value.

  7. Name the new String {f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6} and press Enter.
  8. Restart your computer.

You don't need to change the value of the String once you've completed the steps. You only need to reboot your computer, and then when right-clicking a folder or a file, you'll no longer see the "Give access to" option.

Context menu with "Give access to" option (left), context menu without "Give access to" option (right).

At any time, you can revert the changes by following the same instructions mentioned above, but on step No. 6, right-click the String you previously created and select Delete to remove it. You can also delete the Blocked (folder) key if it didn't exist before and you created it.

Although the "Give access to" to option is new to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the sharing capability is not. This option has been available in previous versions, and it was known as Share with, but to avoid confusion with the new Share option to share files using the new experience, Microsoft simply renamed the option.

Mesh Wi-Fi pros and cons

Google Wifi

So, you're interested in a mesh Wi-Fi system for your home. Here's a quick look at some pros and cons of the technology.

Mesh Wi-Fi is something you're probably hearing more and more about, especially since some of the big players in home networking equipment are getting involved. Having a mesh system probably isn't quite what you're used to, and there are definite pros as well as cons to going this route.

Here we quickly break down some of the key points in each category.

What is mesh Wi-Fi?

This snippet from our guide on choosing the right home network for you sums it up well.

Mesh networks are a more advanced option and sport an interesting design that allows data to leap between relays to reach a specific destination. This skips a central hub or router calling all the shots. So instead of having a single point of access for all devices, a mesh network can consist of multiple relays that connect with one another and can quickly direct traffic between devices.

Nodes connect together in a mesh rather than a linear pattern. This means that all nodes can talk to all other nodes. With a router and Wi-Fi extender arrangement, each extender talks to the router but not any other extenders.

Mesh Wi-Fi pros

Better coverage

One of the main positives to a mesh Wi-Fi system is better coverage throughout your home. You're no longer relying on a router in one spot broadcasting signal throughout the entire building, but instead, a network of nodes all working together. Placing nodes throughout provides better overall coverage with less signal drop.

No single point of failure

There is no main access point in a mesh network. All nodes are alike, and while you'll still need the one connected to the broadband connection to keep working properly for internet access, the network will remain active regardless. And as they're all alike, if you encounter a problem with one node, it can easily be replaced by another.

A single network

When you're using a repeater in conjunction with a router, you end up with separate network connections, hopping potentially between different access points. Mesh networks maintain a single SSID and connection throughout, intelligently connecting you to the best node.

Modular

A mesh network can be as big or small as you wish. Because each node is just a single module in the overall network, you can always add or take them away as is necessary. There's minimal setup involved in adding a new node, too.

Mesh Wi-Fi cons

Price

Mesh Wi-Fi solutions right now are expensive. You'll probably be able to get a good router and repeater for less than a mesh system.

Scalability

Range from each node is less than you would get from a router or an extender, and as such scaling across a large house will require a number of nodes which then comes back partly to price. Coverage will only be better if you can provide enough nodes to suit your building.

Lacks advanced features

Designed to be extremely consumer-friendly, some of the current mesh systems are somewhat lacking in features that power users might want. These include things like changing the DHCP IP, adding custom DNS or even running both a 2.4GHz and 5GHz band network. They're designed to be simple.

Speed will still suffer at extremities

If you're buying a mesh system expecting it to maintain the same internet speeds across your whole home you'll be disappointed. Wireless signal degrades the further it gets from the point of origin. Even with mesh, the signal starts at one node, with the others having to then pick that up and amplify it as it rebroadcasts. The only way to get the best speeds throughout is to use a wired network.

Bottom line on mesh Wi-Fi

Mesh Wi-Fi is very good. Its biggest pluses are helping you get much better coverage throughout your entire home with a single SSID and the ability to intelligently switch between nodes as required.

But, it's not perfect and is also expensive. Many systems are designed to be very user-friendly, but we're still in the early days of consumer-grade products. Only you can decide whether they're right for you by weighing the good against the bad, and if you're happy to pay a premium.

Digital game gifting is finally available on Xbox One, allowing any game to be sent over Xbox Live. Here's how it works on the console.

Continuing to expand the Xbox One's digital ecosystem, a recent update to the console added the ability to gift games directly through its online marketplace. While previously, gifting digital games proved to be challenging via third-party retailers, game gifting integrates this as a native feature of Xbox Live.

Although there are some minor differences as a part of the checkout process, gifting Xbox One games is mostly similar to buying games for yourself. Prior to completing a transaction, you'll be asked to identify the recipient, before a redeemable key is distributed via email. These are the steps to send Xbox One games over Xbox Live using the gifting feature.

Note: For now, Xbox One game gifting is still in testing, with the functionality restricted solely to select members of the Xbox Insider Program.

How to gift an Xbox One game to Xbox friends

The easiest way to send games to friends is by gifting to an Xbox Live Gamertag, which allows you to send products without obtaining a personal email address. As a part of the checkout process, you'll be given the option to pick a person from your friends list and gift the item with a personalized name/message.

  1. Find a game to gift on the Microsoft Store on your Xbox One console.
  2. Select Buy as gift from the store listing.
  3. Select Choose from your list of Xbox friends.
  4. Choose a Gamertag from the friends list that appears.
  5. Enter your preferred sender name (this can also be used to send a small message).
  6. Confirm your payment details to complete the transaction.

The recipient will now receive an email from Microsoft, at primary communication email address attached to their Microsoft account. This contains a 25-character key for redemption via redeem.microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on the console or other official Xbox applications.

How to gift an Xbox One game via an email address

Games can also be gifted without specifying a Microsoft account, by providing a valid email address. Xbox digital gifting currently revolves email delivery anyway, making the redemption process is near identical for the recipient. However, instead of choosing an Xbox friend, enter an email when prompted.

  1. Find a game to gift on the Microsoft Store on your Xbox One console.
  2. Select Buy as gift from the store listing.
  3. Select Enter an email address.
  4. Enter the recipient's email address in the box provided. You will not be prompted to confirm the email is correct, so check the right one has been entered.
  5. Enter your preferred sender name (this can also be used to send a small message).
  6. Confirm your payment details to complete the transaction.

An email will be sent to the specified address from Microsoft, containing a 25-character key for redemption via Xbox Live. This can be redeemed at redeem.microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on the console or other official applications.

Gifting Xbox One digital games: Everything you need to know

$

Digital games can now be gifted directly through the Xbox One. Here's how to get started with the feature, alongside some restrictions to consider.

Following the public release of the Xbox fall update, select Xbox One users are now receiving a new wave of features as a part of the upcoming subsequent release. Kicking this off, Microsoft recently rolled out game gifting to the Alpha ring of the Xbox Insider Program, allowing users to send items from the console's digital storefront to friends. Here's everything you need to know about game gifting on Xbox One, along with its associated restrictions.

What is game gifting for Xbox One?

Game gifting allows any Xbox One user to send games over Xbox Live in a digital form. As the platform's only approved method of sending digital games between players, giftable games can be purchased directly through the Microsoft Store and sent to friends. While physical games have been relatively easy to gift due to the nature of the medium, this is the first in-house solution offered for those with digital libraries.

How can I gift digital Xbox One games?

Similarly to rival platforms such as Steam, the Xbox One's game gifting feature is tied directly to the console's integrated store. Found on most game store pages, users can select the "Buy as gift" option, followed by a checkout process similar to traditional game purchases. After selecting the recipient via your Xbox Live friends list or manually entering an email address, a 25-digit redeemable code will be sent over email. In its current implementation, there's no option to receive codes outside of your email inbox. For a full breakdown of how to use digital game gifting, follow our in-depth step-by-step guide.

How to gift digital Xbox One games over Xbox Live

Which games can be gifted over Xbox Live?

In the first iteration of digital game gifting, most Xbox One titles available in the Microsoft Store can be sent. However, there are some caveats, leaving certain titles excluded for now. Select Xbox One titles (most notably certain Play Anywhere titles) can't be sent via game gifting right now. Xbox 360 games and original Xbox games also cannot be sent, due to the way these games are integrated into the marketplace. Preorders through the Microsoft Store are excluded from game gifting too, meaning the title must formally release to be sent.

Watch out – digital codes for games purchased via game gifting are also region-specific, meaning items are tied to the store they're obtained from.

Can I send DLC using game gifting for Xbox One?

Alongside full titles, downloadable content (DLC) such as expansions, map packs and cosmetic skins are all eligible for game gifting. For DLC to be sent, the base game also doesn't need to be owned by the sender and recipient.

Microsoft has implemented some restrictions surrounding DLC though, preventing consumable items from being sent through the feature. These items include loot boxes, virtual currencies, and microtransactions that can be spent, redeemed or expire.

Both Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions are also available as gifts.

Can I send discounted items as gifts?

If a sale is underway for games and DLC, game gifting can be used to provide a gift at a discount. However, only two copies of a specific discounted item can be gifted over a two-week period by a single user. After purchasing two copies of an item via game gifting, that item also cannot be gifted again for another 14 days, regardless of whether the discount is still active. Every two weeks, only 10 discounted items can be gifted from a single account before entering a cooldown period, where only full-price titles can be sent. There is no known restriction on full-price game gifting.

Can I refund gifted games?

Unlike traditional game purchases where games are instantly licensed to your account, gifted titles are sent in the form of a redeemable code. Due to this, games sent via game gifting are non-refundable, despite self-service refunds now being offered for traditional purchases.

Have you been using Xbox One game gifting so far? If so, let us know what you think of the feature and its restrictions in the comments section.

Fortnite vs. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: Which is best for you?

$
0
0

Two of the most popular Battle Royale shooters on the market right now are PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite. These two games are similar but ultimately offer two different experiences.

Ever since the launch of Epic Games'Fortnite Battle Royale mode, it has fiercely competed with another entry in the genre that is undoubtedly 2017's biggest gaming phenomenon: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG for short.

Some may say that Fortnite tries to copy PUBG, but that isn't wholly true. In reality, both titles are only similar in some areas, not all. Once you look past the basics of the games, you'll find that PUBG and Fortnite target very different types of consumers. In this article, we're going to examine both games to determine the similarities and differences between them and to find out which one might be best for you.

Similarities between both games

In both PUBG and Fortnite, 100 players have to parachute and land on a large island from an aerial vehicle. From there, players must search the game world for weapons, armor, healing items, and more in order to properly equip themselves for combat.

As everyone starts to fight and kill each other, the area on the map that is considered "safe" begins to shrink. Areas no longer in this safe zone damage players if they remain in them. This mechanic ensures that all players will eventually run into each other. After the final combatants duke it out, the last man standing is considered the winner because he or she lived the longest.

Finally, both titles have randomized loot spread out throughout the play space to ensure that nowhere on the map becomes a "dominant" location for looting. Where you find an assault rifle, one game may be the location of a pack of bandages in the next.

PUBG: Tactical, intense, and grounded

PUBG is, like the Arma mods that spawned the Battle Royale genre years ago, represents a very skill-based and tactical experience. Realism is something that Bluehole Studios aimed to achieve as much as possible with the game, and it shows. Your character can't do crazy movements, rounds that you fire have authentic bullet physics, and weapons found throughout the world can be modded with a wealth of different attachments that alter how they perform in combat.

It doesn't stop there, either. Cover in PUBG is more important than it is in the majority of shooters; this is because being shot will cause a large amount of damage, even if wearing body armor. Vehicles are also a major aspect of PUBG's gameplay sandbox. Using a car will allow you to reach locations much faster than sprinting, but both the windows of the car and the loudness of its engine will leave you a massive target to the players in your vicinity.

As you can probably guess, PUBG requires you to outwit and outmaneuver opponents using tactics and skill. Some major aspects of the PUBG learning curve are found in understanding how to utilize shadows to stay hidden, how to quickly and accurately fire over long distances, and knowing when to move and when to hunker down in cover, and these are only the tip of the iceberg.

This kind of environment breeds competitive play, and that is exactly the kind of gamer that PUBG is aimed towards. If you're looking for a competitive and skill-focused type of Battle Royale game, then this is right up your alley. It's worth noting, though, that unlike Fortnite, PUBG is $29.99, and is currently only on PC, though it is coming to Xbox in the near future. If you're willing to invest some money in, though, what you'll get is a competent and engaging competitive experience.

See on GMG (Steam)

Fortnite: A laid-back, casual experience

Fortnite essentially takes the Battle Royale formula and takes it in the opposite direction of PUBG, Where PUBG is competitive, skill-oriented and intense, Fortnite overall contains much more casual, relaxed gameplay.

Featuring a cartoony art style, simple gun mechanics, and a unique, creative base-building twist, Fortnite is aimed towards the types of players who care more about getting into some action than they do about reaching the end goal of victory. In Fortnite, bullets have no drop off with the exception of the sniper rifle, meaning that gunfights across distances are generally much easier and forgiving to the players.

Where Fortnite really sets itself apart from PUBG, though, is with its base-building mechanics. By harvesting things around you in the map, you can gain wood, stone, and metal resources which can then be used in construction. Players often will engage each other from the safety of their large stone fortresses or wooden sniper towers, but these structures aren't invincible. Anything created by a player can be destroyed with gunfire or explosives, though stone and metal are much more resilient than wood.

This high level of destructibility is also seen in the world itself. Rocks, trees, and even buildings are all able to be destroyed, meaning that all cover is only temporary. As a result of this, games in Fortnite feel a lot more "chaotic" (in a fun way) due to the fact most players feel obligated to always keep moving, which causes them to run into each other.

Fortnite is a relaxed and forgiving Battle Royale experience that will offer you hours of fun gameplay. It is currently free-to-play on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

See on the Xbox Store

Conclusion

While PUBG and Fortnite are similar in some regards, they are ultimately quite different. PUBG is a refined tactical and competitive experience whereas Fortnite is a casual and relaxing game that puts Epic Games' unique base-building idea on center stage.

Here's why Microsoft is paying me (and will pay you) to use Bing!

$
0
0

I like free money. That's why I'm a fan of Microsoft's Rewards Program. Microsoft "pays" me just for using its Bing search engine, and you can get paid too.

This may sound like a scam or gimmick. I assure it's not. Nor is it a philanthropic effort by Microsoft to line our pockets with cash. Microsoft's search engine is a distant second to Google's and Microsoft's trying to get people to use Bing. It's that simple.

Most people don't realize that search engines aren't just about helping you find information. They're a major backbone for a range of services provided by companies like Microsoft and Google. The data collected from billions of searches executed daily via text, voice and increasingly smartphone cameras, are fueling these firm's artificial intelligence, bots, machine learning, natural language processing and personal digital assistant efforts.

This is why these companies integrate search wherever they can. They need data to make AI smarter, natural language processing more accurate, machine learning more efficient and digital assistants and bots more practical.

Microsoft needs us to use Bing

To make Bing more prolific, Microsoft has included its Bing-based digital assistant, Cortana, in Windows 10 and its Edge Browser. Sadly, Apple recently switched from Bing to Google as the default search engine for Siri and macOS Spotlight.

Billions of smartphones via browsers and digital assistants provide a massive and engaging search platform. Combined with a weak mobile presence and Apple's dropping of Bing, Microsoft's Cortana and Bing are much less engaged than Google Assistant, Siri, and Google. Microsoft is aggressively pushing Cortana and Bing on iOS and Android, however.

Search is a backbone for Microsoft's and Google's AI strategies.

This cross-platform strategy is Microsoft's attempt to ensure its presence on mobile and a pursuit of the data Bing and Cortana on iOS and Android will provide the company to fuel its AI, intelligent cloud and ambient computing efforts.

The effectiveness of a company's AI efforts, such as those that are and will be reflected in ambient computing via smart speakers and other IoT devices, rests on the amount and quality of data companies can collect and incorporate into its systems. As a distant second in search, this is why Microsoft's willing to pay us to use Bing.

Microsoft's AI vision

How does Microsoft Rewards work?

Microsoft's Rewards Program "pays" users in the form of Amazon, Xbox, Microsoft Store or other types of gift cards (or sweepstakes entries). I opt for Amazon gift cards. You'll need a Microsoft account to participate, which you can create with an "outlook.com" email address.

Next just sign in at Bing.com (or use the Bing app).

"Earning money" is easy:

  • Search using Bing to earn Reward Points.
  • Redeem Reward Points for Amazon (or other) gift cards.
  • Finally, add the gift card to your Amazon account (create an Amazon account if you don't already have one).

Now buy stuff. It's that simple.

Tracking your points toward a $5 Amazon gift card

You'll have to earn 5,250 Reward Points to get an Amazon gift card. That's not hard to do, and it doesn't take long. I just cashed in enough points for three cards, and at 4,255 points I'm well on my way toward a fourth. That's $20 for doing what I'm going to do anyway: search.

On PC, your Reward Points are visible in the upper left corner of the Bing homepage next to a small icon of a medal. On mobile (Edge) selecting the hamburger menu launches a drop-down menu which reveals your Reward points as the first option.

Redeeming your Microsoft Reward Points

To redeem your points on mobile Edge select the Rewards option and you'll be brought to your dashboard. Then select Redeem at the top of the page. On PC first, select Rewards, and at the bottom of the pull-down menu find and "select "See all rewards" to the right of "Redeem."

Once on the redeem page scroll down to the Amazon gift card (or whatever gift card you want) and select Redeem. You'll be asked to confirm your redemption. Note there are different rewards in different territories, and note that Bing Rewards aren't available everywhere either.

After confirming you'll be sent an email with an order confirmation number and claim code. To apply your Amazon gift card to your Amazon account, go to Amazon.com and enter the claim code you were provided. Once you're done $5 will immediately be added to your Amazon account. You're done.

I've yet to meet someone that doesn't want a few extra bucks. "Binging" rather than "Googling" is an easy way to get paid for something you're doing anyway. So set your default search engine to Bing, and "Bing it" to earn money.

There's no reason you should miss out on free cash. I'm earning and you can start earning too.

9 easy ways to sell an old Surface PC so you can buy a new one

Where can you sell your old Surface PC to get some cash for a new one?

With the announcement of the Microsoft Surface Book 2, many people are wondering how they can offload their old device in order to make room (and funds) for a new one. We have some good news! Surface devices are built exceptionally well and hold onto their value for quite some time.

See at Microsoft Store

Here are the best places you can sell your old Surface before the new one arrives.

Selling your old Microsoft Surface

There are a number of great spots where you can sell your old Surface device to make room and money for a new one.

Craigslist

Craigslist is a great way to sell your Surface locally. All you need to do is check a few boxes to specify what you're selling, fill in a few fields detailing your Surface, and upload a picture (optional but recommended).

You set the price so you can be happy with what you're getting, but you also have to deal with meeting up with someone to exchange goods. Make sure it's in a public place because Craigslist has a worse scammer reputation than the Canadian equivalent, Kijiji.

Cute, but maybe avoid pictures of your pets sleeping on your Surface.

Facebook Marketplace

The great thing about Facebook Marketplace is that you get some free advertising directed at all the people on your Friends list and beyond. You can also see — in most cases — who you're dealing with by visiting their profile. This doesn't entirely remove the scam aspect, but it will likely make you a bit more comfortable when meeting up.

It's only available in certain regions, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, however. Everyone else is out of luck. Still, it's a great way to have your Surface seen by a lot of people, and it's free to use.

Sell your Surface with Facebook Market

letgo

If you have an iPhone or Android and are located in the U.S., letgo is a stylish way to go about your business. It features ads with a bit of writing and a large image, so you definitely want to take some nice shots of your Surface. Potential buyers just enter a keyword and their address, and they're shown a selection of options that match.

It's a lot like Kijiji and Craigslist but with more of a hipster vibe. There are no fees to pay, but you can choose to upgrade your ads to be more attractive for a small price.

Swappa

Want to expand past your local marketplace? No problem with Swappa. Sellers choose the item they're listing, create an account, and fill in the information required to sell. There is a graph that shows how much these devices have sold for on the site over the last six months, and it will even tell you when you should sell.

There is a set list of conditions that your device must meet before it can be sold, which also gives the buyer more confidence. If the device doesn't meet expectations, PayPal's protection should handle it. Sales go through PayPal, and it takes a certain, small cut.

Swappa doesn't charge sellers but featured listings can be purchased for a small fee. If you aren't having any luck selling in your neighborhood, check out Swappa.

Surface Book 2

eBay

The online auction giant eBay has been around for quite awhile, and it's a proven method of selling your stuff. It gets tons of traffic and the auction aspect of it can be exciting, but there are often some hefty fees that will come out of your own pocket after selling.

There are plenty of return policy options to make the buyer feel more comfortable, but as long as you advertise honestly, the sale should go smoothly. If you don't mind the fees or the auction format, eBay is a great way to get a lot of eyes on your Surface.

See your Surface with eBay

Amazon

Amazon is another giant when it comes to online sales, so you're pretty much guaranteed to have traffic flowing past your Surface listing. You have to pay fees to use Amazon, but setting up a listing is about as easy as possible, and you get to set your own price.

The return policy that Amazon employs for third-party sellers might be a bit too much for some. You must either provide a return address, a pre-paid return label, or you must be ready to give a full refund. Don't mind any of those options? Amazon lets you get rid of that old Surface without having to do much heavy lifting.

NextWorth

NextWorth questionnaire

NextWorth operates a bit differently than the other options here. It's more of a virtual pawn shop than a place where you can create a listing. You search for the device you want to sell, answer some questions about the quality of the device, and get a quote for how much NextWorth will pay you for the device.

If you accept, you can receive a payment through PayPal before you ship (NextWorth pays) your Surface away. The only downside here is that you might not get the price you want, just like a real pawn shop. An unblemished Surface Pro 4 with an Intel Core i7 processor was quoted at about $180.

Sell your Surface with NextWorth

Windows Central Marketplace

Windows Central Marketplace

The Windows Central community is full of avid Microsoft users, meaning there are plenty of Surface devices for sale and for trade. All you have to do is follow the guidelines while posting, and your device should get a bunch of eyes on it.

If you'd like to keep the sale in-house, our Marketplace is full of honest buyers, sellers, and traders.

Windows Store Recycle for Rewards program

Windows Store Recycle for Rewards program

If you're lucky enough to have a physical Microsoft Store near you, you might be able to take advantage of the Recycle for Rewards program. You essentially take your old Surface device (or really any device) into the store, a member of the staff examines it, and you get a store credit that can be applied to a new Surface.

Any devices that no longer retain any value can be left behind to be properly recycled. Mother Nature appreciates it!

Find a physical Microsoft Store near you

Where can you buy a new Surface device?

Don't forget, any of the selling methods listed above can also be used to pick up a used Surface. However, if you want a new device, the Microsoft Store is still the best place to shop.

Updated October 25, 2017: We've refreshed this list to ensure you're still getting the absolute best ways to sell your old Surface device.

Getting started with Microsoft Flow

If you're not using Microsoft Flow for process automation, are you really as efficient as you think you are?

As we move through our daily routine, it's natural to wonder how you can become more efficient. How do you automate simple tasks? Where can you save time within a process without sacrificing quality or reliability of the results? Microsoft Flow answers the call for the automation of workflows. Take a look at how you can get started with Microsoft Flow.

If used correctly, you can perform a wide array of functions such as email attachment storage, data collection or automatically posting to social media. Microsoft Flow goes well beyond these simple yet important functions. Before you jump into the deep end, here's how you can get your feet wet.

What are connectors and triggers?

A connector is a service that you log into and use. Examples of these include OneDrive for Business, Twitter or Salesforce. A trigger is an event that occurs within the service that will then result in the desired action. These triggers include, when a lead is created or when an email from Jane Smith arrives in the Inbox folder. This then initiates the flow you are about to create.

Each flow has a detailed section that helps you manage it to optimize the services found within. Options are housed within tiles. They are as follows:

  • Description — This section contains the title and the description of the flow. You can change the details by clicking on Edit description.

  • Connections and Owners — These tiles both contain all service connection types used in the flow and the details of the individuals who are using that particular flow. Owners can update, edit and even delete flows. All owners can also add and remove members from the flow ownership.

  • Run History — As flows are running, you can see details such as the date they were created as well as trigger details. A Status section will also indicate if a trigger had failed.

How to Create a Flow in Microsoft Flow

Microsoft Flow offers a few ways to create flows for your benefit. Templates are readily available throughout the website, but you can also decide to bake one from scratch.

How to create a Flow from a template

  1. Log into your Office 365 account.
  2. Click the Apps icon in the top right corner of the window.
  3. Select Flow from the app grid.

  6. Click on the ellipses (...) to add connections, rename the flow, add a comment and view specific settings.
  7. Choose a folder to work with.
  8. Click Advanced options to specify details such as Sender email addresses, Importance and Attachment status.
  9. Select New Step.
  10. Add an action such as OneDrive for Business – Create file.
  11. Choose folder Path, name and content.
  12. Click Save Flow.

How to create a team flow

  1. Select My flows from the top ribbon.

As you select individuals, they then become owners of the flow. They have permissions to fully manage the connectors, triggers, and actions of the flow.

How to delete an owner

  1. Click My flows in the top ribbon.
  2. Choose a flow to work with.
  3. Select the People icon on that flow.
  4. Navigate to the owner that is to be removed.
  5. Click the Delete icon (trash can).
  6. Select Remove this owner in the confirmation dialog box.

How to add steps in Microsoft Flow

How to add a step

You aren't limited to the steps found in existing templates. In fact, it's possible to add multiple actions to a flow in order to further your automation reach.

  1. Access your flow from My flows in the top ribbon.
  2. Select the flow to be edited from your list.
  3. Select New Step.

How to share your flow in Microsoft Flow

How to submit your own Flow to the Microsoft Flow Template gallery

  1. Navigate to the My flows section.
  2. Choose a flow from the list to submit.
  3. Select the ellipsis (...) for the chosen flow.
  4. Select Submit as template from the drop-down menu. A dialog box will appear.
  5. Select an appropriate title for the flow.
  6. Define the function and solution that your flow performs in the Description field.
  7. Click the checkboxes for all categories that apply to your flow template.
  8. Select Submit.

With any luck, your flow will be verified and approved for inclusion in the gallery of templates. Keep in mind that your flow may be modified during the verification process.

Wrapping up

The steps above only cover the bare basics of Microsoft Flow. We have just scratch the surface of the automation benefits; imagine notifying your team of a new lead in Dynamics CRM with a post in their Yammer group or sending a customized email to a candidate when they sign their offer. Are you using Microsoft Flow to automate repetitive tasks? Which flow do you use the most? Let us know in the comments.

Getting Xbox One X game updates: List of games, availability, download sizes and more

Here's what you need to know about games being updated for the Xbox One X, as well as how to obtain them.

Microsoft's latest flagship games console, the Xbox One X, is nearly with us – promising to deliver a range of visual enhancements to both new and existing Xbox One games.

Extending the Xbox family, the console offers resolutions up to 4K, improved frame rates, and other visual upgrades – all while maintaining compatibility with previous games and accessories.

The biggest draw of the Xbox One X is its games library, with many of these titles on track to receive 4K updates – adding various upgrades to take advantage of the leap in graphical capability. Here's everything you need to know about updates coming to Xbox One X games.

Which games are getting Xbox One X updates?

Since the Xbox One X was officially unveiled, Microsoft has been keen to tout the number of titles to be upgraded to take advantage of the console's additional resources via explicit updates. These games, marketed under the term "Xbox One X Enhanced," can offer improved resolutions, frame rates, and other visual changes, via free updates to all users.

In the months since, developers have been keen to jump on board, with supposedly over 150 titles with updates in the works. Whether or not specific games are upgraded for the console is entirely up to the developer, meaning that certain titles may never see upgrades if not seen as viable.

We've been keeping track of all games set to be enhanced for the Xbox One X so far, from official documentation, developer interviews, and store listings. Take a look at our full list so far, which contains a breakdown of these titles and their planned enhancements.

Complete list of Xbox One X Enhanced games

When will Xbox One X updates release for games?

With Xbox One X updates being distributed on the developer's own accord unless specified by the studio, there are no set details on exactly when games will be updated for Xbox One X. While a sizeable group of titles is expected to receive updates during the console's launch period, many will be released later on.

Xbox marketing manager, Aaron Greenberg, has confirmed that Microsoft will be providing more details on exactly which games are receiving Xbox One X updates for launch. So far, Forza Motorsport 7, Assassin's Creed Origins, Gears of War 4, and Rise of the Tomb Raider are all among the games with updates confirmed for release day.

How do I download Xbox One X game updates?

If installing a game on Xbox One X, the device will automatically download enhanced content if it's available for the title. This will ensure that the correct assets are automatically rolled out to capable hardware, to ensure users get the best experience from their console. If an update has already been released, improved assets will be downloaded as a part of the initial game installation.

On regular Xbox consoles, such as the original Xbox One and Xbox One S, users won't be able to take advantage of these upgrades. However, upgraded assets can be installed, reducing the time spent downloading when upgrading to an Xbox One X. For details on downloading Xbox One X updates to a standard Xbox One, make sure to read our step-by-step guide.

How to download Xbox One X 4K game assets on your regular Xbox One

How big are Xbox One X game updates?

When a game is updated with Xbox One X enhancements, the size of the game will obviously increase. How much it increases will vary hugely between games, depending on the improvements implemented. For some titles, being enhanced for Xbox One X will simply mean a bump in resolution and frame rate, which won't result in a major download. In contrast, when new textures, effects, and other assets are added, the file size can grow significantly – in some cases hitting double the original.

As reported previously, Microsoft has discussed ways of reducing the download size for Xbox One X titles, by intelligently deciding exactly which assets to install and unpack. Through this method, we may see certain language packs or even certain game modes being obscured to ensure only essential content is downloaded to your console. Assassin's Creed Origins already utilizes this to some degree, offering language packs as separate downloads.

How Microsoft will ensure Xbox One X download sizes are as small as possible

Which games already have Xbox One X updates available?

For those who have configured their consoles to download Xbox One X assets prior to launch, updates for certain titles will be made available in the weeks to come. Some developers are even planning to release their Xbox One X updates prior to the console's release, to ensure everything you need has been downloaded before your Xbox One X arrives.

As of publication, Microsoft's own Gears of War 4 is the only title we've been able to verify with Xbox One X assets already available for download. As more updates release we'll be sure to update this article with a list of games offering 4K updates.

How to get started with Story Remix in Photos on Windows 10

Check out how you can start using the Story Remix experience included with the Photos app for Windows 10.

Microsoft is touting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update as a new version to inspire the creativity within all of us, and one way the company is doing just that is with the new Photos app.

Alongside the visual changes incorporating Microsoft's Fluent Design, the Photos app introduces Story Remix, which is a new experience that makes it super easy to take your pictures and videos to create videos that bring your content to life with transitions, 3D effects, soundtracks, and styles.

Story Remix is very similar to the old Windows Movie Maker but reimagined for Windows 10 with Microsoft's deep learning technology and AI (Artificial Intelligence) that finds relevant content and automatically creates videos that you can keep, share, edit, and delete. Of course, with the Photos app, you can always create your own videos.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll show you the new Photos app Story Remix and everything you can do in the experience from creating a video automatically to creating and editing a project from start to finish.

How to work with the Story Remix editor in the Photos app

Before diving into this guide, let's just clarify that you won't find the "Story Remix" reference anywhere in the Photos app. Instead, within the Create menu, you'll find two new options: Video remix and Video project to create a remix.

How to create a Story Remix project automatically

In the new version of the Photos app, there are two ways to create a video project in addition to the automatically generated content. You can select the option to let the app create a video automatically with transitions, themes, and soundtracks, or you can create and edit a project from start to finish.

To create a new video remix project automatically, use the following steps:

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Click the Create button in the top-right corner.
  3. Click the Video remix option.

  4. Select the image and videos you want to use in the project.
  5. Click the Add button in the top-right corner.

  6. Type a name for the project.

  7. Click the Create video button.

Once you've completed the steps, the Photos app will scan the content, and it'll create a video automatically with transitions, styles, and music. Then you'll be able to preview the final project.

If you don't like the current customization, you can click the Remix it for me button, and the app will re-arrange the content, change the style, and soundtrack.

At the top of the preview experience, you have a few controls to undo and redo changes, and at the bottom, you can easily export or share the video. In addition, there is a button that allows you to jump to the editor to customize the project just the way you like.

How to create a Story Remix project from scratch

If you want to create a video with images and videos from scratch, you can use these steps:

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Click the Create button in the top-right corner.

    • Quick Tip: You can also select the images first, and then click the Add to button to create a new project.
  3. Click the Video project option.

  4. Select the image and videos you want to use in the project.
  5. Click the Add button in the top-right corner.

  6. Type a name for the project.
  7. Click the Create video button.

After completing the steps, the video editor will open so you can edit, preview, and share your creation.

How to edit a Story Remix project

The video editor for Story Remix is made up of three main sections. On the top-left, you'll find the media bin with files you selected in the previous steps, and those already included in the card-based timeline will appear with the top-right corner folded.

On the top-right side, you can preview your project with all the current changes, and as you play the video, you'll see the timeline highlighting the card that is being played.

At the bottom, you'll find the timeline. Here you can drag and drop any card from the media bin on the top-left. Also, depending on the content you're editing, you'll get a different set of features you can use to edit your video.

For example, editing only images, the tools available will include Duration, Filters, Text, and Motion. However, if you're editing a video (or images and videos), the set of tools will include Trim, Filters, Text, Motion, and 3D effects.

Adding more media files

While editing a video, you can always add more media files to your project, just click the Add photos and videos button in the media bin and select the files from your collection.

Adding a new theme

In the Photos app, a theme is a pre-defined set of customization options, including filters, music, and text styles that you can apply to your project.

If you don't want to spend the time picking a text style, soundtrack, and transition, you can apply a theme, make sure to add all the pictures and videos you want to the timeline first, and then from the toolbar, in the top-right corner, click the Themes button.

Then simply pick one of the themes included in the Photos app, including:

  • No theme.
  • Adventure.
  • Chilled.
  • Classic.
  • Electric.
  • Loved.

As you select a new theme, a preview will play from the left side, and if you like your pick, you can then click the Done button to apply it.

Adding a soundtrack

Using Story remix on Windows 10, you can also add custom soundtracks to your videos, just click the Music button from the toolbar in the top-right corner.

You can pick from the tracks available within the app.

Or you can add music from your own library by clicking the Your music button.

Quick Tip: It's also possible to click the Add items to Music folder link to include songs in your library for quicker access.

Adding image duration

As you add media to the timeline, you'll notice that every image includes a default time duration in the project. If you want the image to have shorter or longer duration, then click the Duration button, and either select another value or specify the time in seconds manually.

Adding filters

Filters are a way to change the look of the images or video clips in your project. In this updated version of Photos, you can pick from twelve different filters, some of which include Adventure, Iceberg, Sepia, Inky, and Loved.

Applying filters is a straightforward process, click the Filters button located in the timeline toolbar, then select the filter you like, and click the Done button in the top-right corner.

Adding custom text

While creating a video, you can also add a custom title or caption to an image or video, just select the card from the timeline, and click the Text button.

In the text editor, enter your custom text using the box on the right side, and select change the style using the available animated text styles.

If you want the title or caption to appear in a different area, you can use the layout options at the bottom of the page, and select the new location.

Once you've completed making the changes you want, click the Done button.

Adding motion

It's also possible to add camera motion styles, and to do this, select the content in the timeline, and click the Motion button.

In the motion editor, you can select the camera motion style you want to add to an image or video, such as Zoom in center, Zoom in right, Pan left, Tilt up, and others.

After making your selection, you can preview the changes, and then click Done to apply the motion.

Trimming video clips

If you want to make a video shorter or just want to show a specific part of the clip, the new Photos experience includes a trimming option to edit your project.

To trim a clip, simply select the video from the timeline, and click the Trim button from the toolbar.

Use the controllers to select a trim area, and before applying the changes, make sure to click the play button to preview the area.

After making the changes you like, click the Done button to trim the clip.

How to add 3D effects to a Story Remix project

Perhaps one of the most exciting features in the Photos app is 3D special effects that you can add (only) to video clips.

In order to add 3D effects to a video clip, select the video clip in the timeline, and click the 3D effects button.

Inside the 3D effect editor, drag and drop any effect where you want it to appear.

Once the effect is in its proper position, use the preview panel to specify the effect's range to only a few second or apply to the entire clip, and use the controllers to rotate its Y and Z axis to put the effect in place.

In this update, some effects can be applied to the whole scene, but there are also some effects that are more location-based, which you can place on a specific area in the scene.

In addition, you'll also notice a Attach to a point toggle switch in the settings. This is an option that allows you to attach the effect to an object in the video clip, so even if the camera was moving the effect would stay in the correct place, and if the effect was anchored to a moving object, the effect would follow the object. Pretty cool.

Quick Tip: 3D effects come with sound. If you don't want to hear them, use the audio slider in the effect settings to mute the sound.

Of course, it's possible to click the Delete button to remove or change the effect at any time. Also, using this feature, you can add one or multiple special effects to a video clip.

After adding the effects you want, click the Done button to apply the new changes and go back to the editor.

How to share a Story Remix project

Once you've finished editing, the project will save automatically, but if you want to share it with other people, you'll need to export the project as a video that you can quickly send out over the internet or USB media.

Quick Tip: To rename the project, just click the current name in the top-left corner, type a new name, and hit Enter.

To share the project with someone else, click the Export or share button in the top-right corner of the screen.

Select one of three choices, including:

  • S — Creates a small remix video file very quickly, which is best suited to send over email and watch on phones.
  • M — Creates a remix video file that is considered the best option to upload and share via social media.
  • L — Creates a large remix video file, and while it can take a long time to produce and upload, it's the best option to showcase the video on the biggest screen in the house.

After the Photos app produces the video, you'll be able to see the path where it was saved along with the option to watch the video in the app, open the file location in File Explorer, and the option to share using your email account or social media.

If you want to share the video, click the Share to social media, email, or other apps option to open the Share experience, select the app or contact, and send the video away to its destination.

The video you recently created can also be found at the top of the Photos app in the Collections section, where you'll also find videos that were automatically generated based on your activities. However, the permanent home for your albums and remix videos will be in the Creations section, where you can not only view them, but you can easily delete them from your collection.

The ultimate Windows 10 Fall Creators Update resource guide

Do you still have questions about the new features and changes in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update? Here are the answers.

Windows 10's Fall Creators Update (version 1709) has been officially out since October 17, 2017, and it's gradually rolling out to millions of compatible devices across the globe.

In this new release, Windows 10 brings a new set of small and big features and improvements, including visual changes, support for emoji, and even a better handwriting experience. OneDrive Files On-Demand brings placeholders back. You can now link your phone to your PC for a new cross-device experience. Microsoft Edge gets vastly improved. You can now shut down your device with voice commands, there are better accessibility tools, and much more.

Whether you're already running the latest version of Windows 10 or you're planning to install it soon, in this guide, you'll find answers to the most common questions to get to know everything that is new with the Fall Creators Update.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Here's everything you need to know to master the new version of Windows 10:

How do I get the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

The best way to download and install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is to wait until the update is offered to you automatically through Windows Update.

If you can't wait, or it has been too long since the update released, Microsoft offers a few options to upgrade manually. You can use the Media Creation Tool to do an in-place upgrade or a clean installation and start with a fresh copy of Windows 10.

It's also possible to use the Update Assistant, which is similar to the Media Creation Tool, but it only allows you to do an in-place upgrade. The tool has been designed to upgrade systems that have issues connecting to the Microsoft's update servers, but anyone can use it.

Why is my device not getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

While there could be problems with your current installation, the primary reason your device isn't seeing the new version is that the update is rolling out slowly only to devices that are known to work with the update.

Usually, if the update is not available through Windows Update, the chances are that the update isn't yet compatible with your computer.

Is there a way to block the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

Yes. Although you can't completely skip a new release of Windows 10, it's possible to temporarily block the Fall Creators Update in several ways, depending on the version you're using.

If you're using Windows 10 Pro, you can block the new version up to 16 months using the "Current Branch for Business" option. Unfortunately, this option isn't available for Windows 10 Home, but you can use a metered connection to block the update.

In the case you're running Windows 10 S, you can use these instructions to defer or postpone the installation of the Fall Creators Update.

Are there any problems with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

No, there aren't significant problems with the new version of Windows 10, only a few isolated issues, which are always expected during the early days of a rollout.
