How to share content in Edge for Windows 10

How do I share web pages using the Edge browser in Windows 10?

Edge for Windows 10 is your portal to the internet. And you probably often find interesting content you'd like to share with friends and coworkers, or save to your own storage apps. Doing so is easy in Edge, thanks to the Share button in its taskbar. Here is our guide to sharing content in Edge.

How to share a link in Edge

Edge for Windows 10 has a number of sharing options based on the apps you have installed on your PC. Here's how to share a link using Edge.

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the web page you'd like to share.

Launch Edge. Navigate to a webpage.

  3. Click the Share button located near the top-right corner of the window.
  4. Click an app through which you'd like to share the web page's link. (In this case we're using Twitter.)

Click the Share button. Click an app.

  5. Log in to the app if you aren't already logged in.
  6. Click Tweet or the applicable share button in the app you're using.

Log in to the app. Click Tweet or share.

The last two steps might change a bit depending on your app of choice, but the premise remains the same, and you'll send out a link to the web page you're currently viewing.

How to share a screenshot in Edge

If you don't want to share the link to an entire web page, you can also just share a screenshot of your Edge window.

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the web page you'd like to share.

Launch Edge. Navigate to a web page.

  3. Click the Share button located near the top-right corner of the window.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow beneath Share.

Click the Share button. Click the dropdown arrow.

  5. Click Screenshot.
  6. Click the app you want to use to share the screenshot. Notice you now have more options — depending on the apps you have installed — including the ability to save the image in OneDrive.

    Click Screenshot. Click an app.

  7. Log in to the app if you aren't already logged in.
  8. Click the Share or Add button depending on the app you're using.

Log in to the app. Click Share or Add.

A screenshot of whatever you're seeing in the Edge window will now be shared using the app you chose.

How to pin apps to the top of the Share menu

If you often use the same app to share content through Edge, you can pin it to the top of the Share menu.

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Click the Share button located near the top-right corner of the window.
  3. Right-click an app.

Click the Share button. Right-click an app.

  4. Click Pin.

To unpin the same app, right-click it again and click Unpin.

How to add apps to the Share menu in Edge

Any apps you have installed on your PC that can share Edge content will automatically show up in the Share menu. If you're already viewing a web page and realize a certain app isn't in your Share menu, you can add it through Edge.

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Click the Share button located near the top-right corner of the window.
  3. Click Look for an app in the Store, and a new Store window will open.

Click the Share button. Click Look for an app in the Store.

  4. Click the app you'd like to download.
  5. Click Get, and the app will download.

    Click an app. Click Get.

The app will now show up in the Edge Share menu as long as it is compatible with the sharing function.

A new update recently dropped for the popular VR shooter, Arizona Sunshine, adding new movement options to use throughout the game's modes. This fixes one of my biggest gripes with the game back at launch, where teleportation was frequently a jarring experience which took you out of the action.

In the update, a new locomotion 'Walking' locomotion type has been added, which offers a new way to traverse Arizona Sunshine's sun-baked world. But how does this affect gameplay for you? Here's what you need to know.

How to mount or unmount ISO images on Windows 10

0
0

When you need to access or extract the content of an ISO image, use this guide to learn the steps to mount and unmount .iso files.

An ISO image is a container that stores a replica of the content of a physical disc, which typically can be a CD, DVD, or even Blu-Ray. Software companies also use ISO images as a medium to distribute their software. For example, when downloading a new Windows 10 Insider Preview build ISO to do a clean install of the operating system.

In the past, you needed to install third-party tools to work with images, but if you're running Windows 10 on your computer, you can mount or unmount ISO files natively without the need of extra software.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the easy steps to mount and unmount ISO images using File Explorer and the PowerShell command-line tool.

How to mount or unmount ISO images using File Explorer

There are a number of ways to work with an ISO file using File Explorer. However, the easiest way to mount an ISO image is by double-clicking the file.

You can also right-click the .iso file and click the Mount option.

Alternatively, you can open File Explorer, select the .iso file, and from the Manage tab, click the Mount button.

Once you mounted the file, you'll notice that Windows 10 will create a virtual disc drive that you can use to access its content from the left pane.

It's possible for third-party tools to configure themselves as the default application to open certain files, including ISO images. If this is the case, you won't see an option to mount images on Windows 10. However, you can still right-click, select Open with, and click Windows Explorer to mount the ISO.

Once you're done working with the image, you can quickly unmount the file by right-clicking the virtual drive under This PC in File Explorer and selecting the Eject option.

How to mount or unmount ISO images using PowerShell

If the option to mount an ISO image is not available, or you prefer to use command lines, you can use PowerShell to access the content inside the image.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for PowerShell and click the result.
  3. Type the following command to mount a .iso image and press Enter:

    Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:\FILE.ISO"

In the command remember to change C:\FILE.ISO with the path to your image file. The quotation marks are required, so don't delete them.

  4. Once you're done working with the image, you can quickly unmount the file by using the following command and press Enter:

    Dismount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:\FILE.ISO"

In the command remember to change C:\FILE.ISO with the path to your image file. The quotation marks are required, so don't delete them.

Wrapping things up

As you can see the process to work with an ISO image file is pretty straightforward, which will not only come in handy when you need to view its content, but also when you need to extract files, or even to install a piece of software without having to burn the ISO to a physical disc.

While we're focusing this guide on the ISO file format, you can also use these steps to mount or unmount IMG image files on Windows 10.

How to bypass or disable Microsoft Edge's SmartScreen Filter

0
0

If Microsoft Edge won't let you download a file you know is fine, use this guide to bypass the SmartScreen Filter in Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 is likely your default web browser, and it aims to offer a modern and secure browsing experience on the web. However, you'll sometimes notice that files you try to download will get blocked by the SmartScreen Filter, even when you know the files are safe.

What is SmartScreen Filter?

SmartScreen Filter is a security feature designed to protect you from internet threats. It automatically identifies and blocks sites and files if they're known by Microsoft to be unsafe. It works by sending information to Microsoft to check against a dynamic list of reported sites and files. If there is a match, SmartScreen Filter will alert you and block the content.

Usually, SmartScreen Filter works well, but sometimes it may become overprotective and prevent you from downloading safe content. Thankfully, Microsoft Edge still allows you to download blocked files. You can even disable the feature, although that's not recommended because it would leave the browser vulnerable and could harm your computer.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to download files blocked by SmartScreen Filter that you know are safe. And we'll detail how to disable the feature in Microsoft Edge.

How to download blocked files in Microsoft Edge

If you're trying to download a file that you absolutely know is safe, but it's being blocked, do the following:

  1. Click the download link.
  2. Click the View downloads button to the right of the "[file.extension] is unsafe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter" warning.

  3. In your Downloads, the blocked file will be listed with the "This is unsafe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter" message, and you can't click it to download. Instead, you need to right-click the item, and select Download unsafe file to complete the task.

If you don't get a warning, and the file turns out to be unsafe, use the "Report that this download is unsafe" option in Downloads to help SmartScreen Filter become more accurate.

How to disable SmartScreen Filter in Microsoft Edge

Although it's not recommended, if you must disable SmartScreen Filter, you can use the following steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the menu (...) button in the top-right corner.
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. Click the View advanced settings button.
  5. Turn off the "Help protect me from malicious sites and downloads with SmartScreen Filter" toggle switch.

Once you complete these steps, SmartScreen Filter will no longer show a warning about suspicious sites or files.

How to use Windows 10 Task Manager to monitor system performance

0
0

Task Manager can help you to monitor your Windows 10 computer's performance in real-time, and here we show you how.

When something is not working correctly on your Windows 10 PC, the Task Manager is a tool that can provide valuable information about your system performance.

Although the Processes tab helps you troubleshoot applications and services running on your computer, you can use the Performance tab to get a real-time information of the performance on your computer, including CPU and memory usage, as well as hard drive, network, and Bluetooth information.

The ability to monitor your computer's performance in real-time can not only help you understand how resources are being utilized, but it's also useful information when trying to figure out the reason your device is not achieving expected network and hard drive speeds, among other issues.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to use Task Manager to monitor the performance of your computer.

How to monitor your PC real-time performance

Opening Task Manager

On Windows 10, you can use Task Manager for an array of tasks, including to view real-time data on your computer's performance, but first, you need to know how to open the tool. Below are a few ways to open Task Manager:

  • Right-click the Taskbar and click on Task Manager.
  • Open Start, do a search for Task Manager and click the result.
  • Use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keyboard shortcut.
  • Use the Ctrl + Alt + Del keyboard shortcut and click on Task Manager.
  • Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the power-user menu and click on Task Manager.

If you never open this tool before, you're likely to see Task Manager in compact mode. To get to Performance, you need to click the More details button, and then click on the Performance tab.

Task Manager compact mode (left), Task Manager advanced mode (right)

How to monitor system performance

In the Performance tab, you can monitor four main components, including processor, memory, hard drive, network (and Bluetooth).

On the left pane by default, you'll see all the components with small graphs displaying their current activity in percentage for CPU, Memory, and Disk, and Kilobits per second for network adapters and Bluetooth devices providing visuals to quickly identify any spikes on resources.

You can always right-click below the components to access the context menu to change the view and hide the graphs or only to show a summary, which can come in handy if you want to keep Task Manager open at all times.

Also, in any section, you can double-click or right-click a graph and select Graph summary view to see only a compact graph with the component activity information.

Quick Tip: If you need to document any information, instead of taking a screenshot, you can right-click anywhere in a section and click Copy from the context menu. Then simply paste the information in a text file for later use.

Here's the breakdown of each section in the Performance tab:

CPU

The CPU section provides details about the processor and resource utilization. In the top-right corner you'll see exactly which processor your computer is using and the clock speed it was designed to run.

The graph shows the overall utilization of the processor over a 60 second period. In addition, you can right-click anywhere inside the section, select Change graph to, and click Logical processors to view a graph for each core of your processor.

The context menu also offers an option to show kernel times, which you would typically use to troubleshoot devices with poorly written drivers or failing hardware that is causing too many interruptions.

At the bottom, you'll see more details about the processor resources, including percentage utilization, processes, threads, handles, and your computer up time.

On the right, you can see the processor specifications, such as speed, the number of cores (virtual processors), if it's capable to run virtual machines, and cached memory information if applicable.

Memory

Memory offers a view of the RAM usage by the system and applications. In the top-right corner, you'll see total amount and type (e.g. DDR3) of memory installed on your device.

In this section, you'll notice that there are two graphs. The first one on the top shows total memory usage over a 60 second period, and the graph below shows the amount of memory is currently allocated.

The memory composition has four parts:

  • In use (Compressed): Amount of RAM currently being used by applications, drivers, or the operating system.
  • Modified: Memory content that has to be saved to the hard drive before it can be used for something else.
  • Standby: Amount of memory that contains cached data and code not being used by the system.
  • Free: Shows memory currently not in use.

You can always see these details by hovering with the mouse over each section of the graph.

At the bottom, you'll also find detailed information about your computer's memory usage, including "In use (Compressed),""Committed,""Cached,""paged pool" and "non-paged pool" memory.

On the right, you can also see memory specifications, such as speed (e.g. 1600MHz), slots available, memory form factor (e.g. SODIMM), and memory reserved for hardware on the right side. The details provided on this page not only give you an overview of memory usage in real-time, but you can use this information at the time you need to upgrade your system.

For example, the "Slots used," tells you whether or not your computer have slots available to add more memory. "Speed,""Form Factor," and memory type are important information at the time to purchase the correct memory sticks to upgrade your computer.

Disk

The Disk section provides important information about hard drive usage. Task Manager doesn't group multiple hard drives into a single view, which means that you'll get a Disk section for each hard drive installed on your computer.

On the top-right corner, you'll see exactly the hard drive your computer is using, the interface type (e.g. mSATA), and capacity in Gigabytes.

This section includes two graphs. The first graph from the top shows you the hard drive activity over a 60 second period. The second graph shows you the transfer speeds in Kilobytes per second over a 60 second period.

At the bottom of the section, you'll also find detailed information, including the percentage of drive active time, the average speed that it takes the hard drive to respond to a request, and read and writes speeds.

Additionally, you get information on actual usable capacity after the drive is formatted, and "System disk" display whether the drive is where Windows 10 is installed, or if it's a secondary drive.

Ethernet/Wi-Fi

Task Manager doesn't group multiple network adapters into a single view, which means that you'll get a section for each Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter installed on your computer. Even virtual network adapters will list separately.

When you select a network adapter, you'll notice the name of your Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter in the top-right corner.

There is only one graph in this section that shows you the throughput of the adapter over a 60 second period.

Below the main graph, you also get information about data sent and received in Kilobits per second. Additional details include adapter name, connection type, and your current IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Advanced users can also right-click the graph and select "View network details" to see more network details that can help troubleshoot network problems, such as link speed, state, bytes generated, sent and received, along with unicast packets information.

Bluetooth

In the Performance tab, you'll also notice that there is a Bluetooth section, which is probably showing as "Not connected," even though you have connected a Bluetooth device to your computer. The reason is that this is actually a network adapter, and it's not meant for peripherals like speakers, keyboard, and mouse.

You will see additional information in the Bluetooth section when you connect your phone or another device, and you begin transferring data.

Wrapping things up

As you can see the Performance tab provides great information on how your computer's hardware is performing with easy to understand graphs and important system and hardware details. This information can be very useful not only to understand how resources are being utilized but to troubleshoot many problems as well.

How to master Zoom settings in Word 2016 for Windows

How do I zoom in and out and set custom Zoom levels in Microsoft Word 2016 for Windows?

When you first get started with Word, all of your documents, new and old, open at the app's default View settings: Print Layout at 100 percent Zoom. If you use a large external display or just don't want to have to squint at the page, you may want to zoom in. Or if you have super vision or for some peculiar reason just really enjoy working on tiny pages, you can also zoom out accordingly.

Word's View options let you zoom on pages, so the documents themselves get larger or smaller, and you can fit multiple pages into a single screen for more effective navigation. You should note, however, that zooming is different than merely increasing or decreasing font size. For more details on how to customize Word's font settings, read:

How to change font defaults in Microsoft Word 2016 for Windows

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not currently let you modify or save Zoom-level defaults. However, Word does "remember" these settings, so any new documents you create or open should display with your last-used View and Zoom settings.

Here's how to master Word 2016's View and Zoom options.

How to zoom in or out on a Word document

Zooming in and out on Word documents is easy.

  1. You can simply drag the horizontal slider in the bottom-right corner of your display toward the left and the minus sign to decrease page size or drag the slider to the right toward the plus sign to increase it.

  2. Click the View tab at the top of the Word screen.

  3. In the third box from the left, labeled Zoom, click the magnifying glass to open a pop-up box, and then choose the specific Zoom percentage you want.

Word also provides a number of advanced ways to view document pages. For example, Read Mode shows two pages side by side, like in a book, with horizontal navigation controls. Word's Web Layout displays document text in one long page, like a web page, that you can scroll down to view.

How to master Word's advanced View and Zoom settings

  1. To toggle Read Mode on and off, click the icon all the way to the left of the Zoom slider at the bottom-right corner of your Word screen. It looks like an open book.

  2. To toggle Web Layout on and off, click the icon to the immediate left of the Zoom slider at the bottom-right corner of your Word screen. It looks like a document behind a tiny globe.

You can also customize Word's Zoom levels using some other View options.

  1. Click either the magnifying glass in the Zoom box of the View tab at the top of your Word screen or the percentage next to the Zoom slider in the bottom right-hand corner of your display, to open the Zoom settings pop-up box.

  2. Within the Zoom settings box, select the Page width option to make Word auto-zoom to find the zoom percentage that best fits an entire page to your display width, whatever its size.
  3. Choose the Text width option to make Word auto-zoom to find the zoom percentage that best fits the full width of the text on your page to your display.
  4. Choose the Whole page option to make Word auto-zoom to find the maximum zoom percentage at which you can view an entire page, from top to bottom, without scrolling. This usually means pages get smaller.
  5. Finally, the Many pages options lets you view multiple document pages on one screen, in rows, though the docs are often quite small. And you can customize the option to display pages in a number of different formations, such as 1x4 (one document's height by four documents' width, to fit your display), 1x3, 1x2 and 1x1, or 2x4 (two rows of documents high by four documents' width, to fit your display), 2x3, 2x2 and 2x1.

  6. To enable the Many pages setting and pick your formation, select the circle next to the option and then click the icon (it looks like an old cathode-ray display) in the Zoom settings pop-up box. Another overlay will appear that lets you pick your preferred formation.

To disable any of the view options listed above, simply change your zoom percentage using the slide at the bottom right of your Word screen or the Zoom box in Words' View tab.

Resident Evil 7 Achievement Guide

Resident Evil 7 debuted to much critical acclaim, quickly becoming known as the scariest game in Capcom's long-running series.

We don't want the Achievements themselves to be frightening though, so here's our comprehensive Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Achievement Guide.

Resident Evil 7 is available now for Xbox Play Anywhere, with cross-buy and cross-save support between Windows 10 and Xbox One.

See on the Windows Store

First Playthrough: Easy Difficulty

This guide applies to all four versions of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Xbox One, Windows 10, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The game has 37 total Achievements/Trophies to unlock, which will require three playthroughs.

Our plan is to:

  1. Beat the game on Easy while getting every collectible and earning the bad ending.
  2. Beat the game on Easy in less than four hours, minimizing healing item and item box use, and earning the good ending.
  3. Beat the game on Madhouse, collecting the Madhouse-exclusive Ancient Coins and earning the good ending.

To make things easier, I've listed the Achievements in the order which you should receive them. No hunting around the page for our readers! And stay tuned for our Collectibles Guide with even more tips.

Spoiler Warning: This guide contains minor spoilers relating to boss fights and a choice players make that determines which ending they will receive.

She's Alive (20)

Travel to Louisiana.

Resident Evil 7

Just start the game for the first time and you'll receive this gimme Achievement once the intro ends.

A-ha! (10)

Obtain something by closely examining an item.

Resident Evil 7

Just before entering the Guest House at the beginning of the game, stop and examine the purse burning in the fire. Press the interact button while looking inside the purse to remove Mia's Driver's License, which Ethan will add to his inventory.

Behind Closed Doors (10)

Close an open door by yourself.

Upon stepping into the Guest House, open the door directly ahead of you. Now press the interact button twice to close the door.

Master of Unlocking (10)

Use a lock pick to open something.

Resident Evil 7

You'll find lock picks throughout the game, but the very first opportunity to get one happens during the first videotape sequence in the Guest House.

  1. As soon as the videotape starts, take a few steps back and get the Lock Pick from the ground.
  2. Enter the Guest House and use the Lock Pick on the drawer in the kitchen.
  3. You can return to the drawer after the videotape ends to find the first Ancient Coin collectible.

Welcome to the Family, Son (20)

Escape from the guest house.

This is a story-based Achievement and can't be missed. After the Mia boss fight in the Guest House Attic, try to leave the way you came in. A cinematic will play, with Ethan eventually arriving in the Main House.

He's Here, There, Everywhere! (20)

Destroy a Mr. Everywhere statuette.

Resident Evil 7

Mr. Everywhere statuettes are bobbleheads dressed as American football players in purple and white uniforms. Destroying a statuette with melee or ranged weapons counts as collecting it.

The first Mr. Everywhere statuette you'll encounter is in the Laundry Room (a safe room) of the Main House. Look for it on the shelf below the tape recorder there. You can't break it when you initially arrive through the underground passage. So leave the room and head to south to the window by the Garage. The officer you meet there will give you a pocket knife. Return and break the statuette.

Nice Try (10)

Put an unrelated object on a shadow plinth.

Resident Evil 7

After entering the Main Hall of the Main House, head into the cubby on the east side of the room. There you'll find a projector with a plinth (pedestal) in front of it. Interact with the plinth and select any item from your inventory other than the one needed for the Sky Hunter puzzle. When the 3D view of the inventory object comes up, cancel and stop interacting with the plinth.

Can't Catch Me (20)

Complete the "Mia" videotape without being spotted by Marguerite.

From the Main Hall, head up the stairs by the door to the second floor. Follow the hall to a wooden door and enter the Recreation Room. Mia's videotape is on the bar to the left of the VCR. Play the tape and prepare to utilize stealth to avoid Marguerite.

  1. As Mia, enter the old house.
  2. Go left, then head right and through the door.
  3. Turn right head through the room to the door on the other side.
  4. Observe the large crate and be ready to hide behind it.
  5. Turn past the corner of the crate to trigger Marguerite.
  6. Hide behind the crate until Marguerite goes through the door on the right.
  7. Turn left past the crate and leave through the door Marguerite came from.
  8. Exit the double doors past the shadow plinth puzzle.
  9. Turn right and hide outside of the shadow plinth room.
  10. After Marguerite leaves, return to the room and solve the shadow plinth puzzle by rotating the Wooden Statuette sitting on the plinth so that its shadow matches the spider shape on the wall.
  11. Take the passage to the next room.
  12. Hide behind the pile of boxes until Marguerite departs.
  13. Turn right past the piles of boxes and drop down into the underground passage.
  14. Reach the end of the passage and examine the photo in the box on the right. A cinematic will play.
  15. If Marguerite didn't see you, the Achievement will pop. Otherwise, you can play the tape and try again.

Open Your Eyes (10)

Use psychostimulants.

After obtaining the Wooden Statuette and solving the Sky Hunter puzzle in the Main Hall of the Main House, a new pathway will open and lead you to the Drawing Room. You'll find the psychostimulants (a box of yellow pills) on a wooden table there.

Using psychostimulants will cause a dot to appear on any nearby item for a couple of minutes, making them much easier to find. If you'd rather not use your first psychostimulants immediately, just save the game, use them for the Achievement, and then reload your save.

Arms in the Air (10)

Block an enemy attack by guarding.

You'll encounter your first Molded enemy in the Monitoring Room of the Main House. When you see one, simply hold the block button (Left Bumper on Xbox) until you're able to block an attack.

Duck If You Love Life (40)

Avoid Jack's scissor attack by crouching.

Resident Evil 7

During the boss fight against Jack in the Morgue, dodge his axe until it breaks and he grabs a scissor weapon. When he prepares to make an overhead strike with the scissors, crouch (click in the Right Stick on Xbox or PlayStation) to avoid the blow.

You Ain't Gettin' Away (20)

Escape to the yard.

Story related and can't be missed.

After gathering all three Dog Heads and using them on the locked door in the Main Hall of the Main House, exit to the yard.

Things Got Personal (20)

Finish off an enemy with the knife.

Although you can get this earlier from Molded enemies, it's easier to wait until you reach the Old House. As soon as you enter, you should see some flying insects attached to the walls. Kill one with the knife.

In the Bag (10)

Increase your item slots.

Finding backpacks will give you more inventory slots. You only need one backpack for the Achievement, but here are all three backpack locations:

  1. Old House safe room: beside the tape recorder
  2. Main House 2F Storage Room: Top shelf of a rack (requires Snake Key to enter)
  3. Wrecked Ship Recreation Room: Use corrosive to destroy the lock to the room.

Slash Slash, Slashity Slash! (20)

Clear insects off a door using a knife.

You can get this Achievement in the Old House. The first time you encounter Marguerite there, she'll slam a door in your face and insects will swarm it. Equip the knife and kill all the insects on the door for the Achievement. Alternately, killing all the insects on a green cabinet will work too.

Back Off, Mrs. B! (40)

Fight off Marguerite while she wanders the old house to make her run away.

After encountering Mia in the Basement of the Old House, Marguerite starts to roam the Dining Hall. You can only get this Achievement from the Dining Hall battle.

  1. Before you confront Marguerite, head to the Old House safe room and save your progress.
  2. Go back to the Dining Hall to fight Marguerite.
  3. Use the pistol and shotgun against Marguerite, and the burner against her insects. (See 'Less is More' for another combat tip.)
  4. After she takes enough damage, she'll knock Ethan down and run away.
  5. Once you have the Achievement, reload your save file to get your ammo back. There's no need to fight Marguerite at this point.

Less is More (40)

Take down two or more enemies with one shot.

During the optional Dining Hall battle against Marguerite, use the shotgun against a swarm of her insects. You should hit several at once.

Fly Swatter (40)

Shoot and knock back Marguerite while she's leaping at you.

You can only get this during the Old House's Greenhouse boss fight against Marguerite.

  1. Save your game at the Trailer safe room before the fight.
  2. Enter the Greenhouse.
  3. Damage Marguerite with the pistol until you trigger the next step.
  4. When Marguerite climbs a wall or ceiling, comes to a stop, and turns her head to look at you, she's preparing to perform a leaping attack.
  5. Switch to the shotgun.
  6. Fire as soon as she jumps at you.
  7. If you score the hit, you'll get the Achievement. Otherwise, keep shooting her with the pistol until you trigger the jumping attack once again.
  8. If you defeat Marguerite without successfully shooting her down mid-jump, quickly reload your save and try again.

The Grave Will Out the Truth (20)

Uncover the secret in the old house.

Story related and can't be missed.

Once you get the D-Series Arm in the Old House, Zoe will call and ask you to meet her in the Trailer safe room. The Achievement will unlock when you get there.

1st Place at the Science Fair (20)

Create all items that contain Chem Fluid and Strong Chem Fluid.

Resident Evil 7

Combining herbs is a Resident Evil tradition. In this game, you'll mix two forms of Chem Fluid with other items to create a total of eight different items. These must all be combined during a single playthrough. Keep a good supply of Chem and Strong Chem Fluids in the item box so that you'll be ready whenever you find new crafting ingredients. You can also use the Separating Agent item to break any combination item down into Chem Fluid. Item combinations:

  1. First Aid Med: Herb + Chem Fluid
  2. Strong First Aid Med: Herb + Strong Chem Fluid
  3. Psychostimulants: Supplements + Chem Fluid
  4. Neuro Rounds: Supplements + Strong Chem Fluid
  5. Handgun Ammo: Gunpowder + Chem Fluid
  6. Enhanced Handgun Ammo: Gunpowder + Strong Chem Fluid
  7. Burner Fuel: Solid Fuel + Chem Fluid
  8. Flame Rounds: Solid Fuel + Strong Chem Fluid

Out Before Dessert (40)

Complete "Happy Birthday" videotape within 5 minutes.

The Happy Birthday videotape is the third tape you'll come across. To find it:

  1. After leaving the Old House and finding the Snake Key in Dissection Room of the Main House, head to the west side of the Main House's second floor.
  2. Use the Snake Key to enter the Kids' Room.
  3. Examine the lamp on the table near the wall and press the button on its underside to reveal the ladder to the Attic.
  4. Climb the ladder and open the cupboard there to find the videotape.
  5. Head back down to the Recreation Room on the second floor to play the tape.

Once you gain control of the person in the tape:

  1. Immediately turn around behind you and grab the candle.
  2. Go through the door on the left and then the door on the right to reach the room with a cake in it.
  3. Look at the cake to receive instructions from Lucas.
  4. Interact with the combination lock. From left to right, the solution is: person hanging from a noose, bird on a tombstone , and a fetus.
  5. Take the Straw Doll. Then turn and remove the Winding Key from the keg.
  6. Leave the room and head to the kitchen.
  7. Turn on the stove and burn the Straw Doll to get the Dummy Finger.
  8. Relight the candle on the stove.
  9. Turn right and use the candle to burn the rope holding a door shut. Enter the balloon room.
  10. Inside the balloon room, find the yellow balloon along the wall besides the cabinet.
  11. Head back to the room you just came from. Use the balloon on the broken gas pipe to get the Quill Pen.
  12. Return to the dummy from which you took the candle at the start of the tape.
  13. Use the Dummy Finger, the Quill Pen, and Winding Key on the dummy, in that order.
  14. Go back to the locked door at the end of the balloon room.
  15. Enter the word LOSER on the lock.
  16. Enter and take the Valve Handle.
  17. Back in the birthday cake room, find pipe near a door and attach the Valve Handle to it. Turn off the sprinkler.
  18. Use the stove to light the candle once more.
  19. Put the candle on the cake to finish the tape.
  20. If you finish in less than five minutes, you'll get the Achievement. Otherwise, replay the tape and try again. You cannot get the Achievement by restarting from checkpoint; you must completely restart the tape.

You Better Start Running (20)

Escape from the Baker family home.

Story related and can't be missed.

This Achievement unlocks after you complete the Boat House boss fight and choose to cure someone with the serum. See 'Just a Memory Now' for advice on which choice to make.

Be Kind, Please Rewind (20)

Watch all the videotapes in a single playthrough.

Resident Evil 7

There are four playable VHS videotapes to discover over the course of the game. Upon collecting a videotape, you must find a VCR and use it to play the tape. If you watch a tape but die before saving the game or reaching a checkpoint, you'll need to watch it again for it to count towards the Achievement.

Here are the videotape locations:

  1. Derelict House Footage: Guest House 2F Safe Room – On the dresser drawer to the right of the tape recorder.
  2. Mia: Main House 2F, Recreation Room – On the bar to the left of the VCR.
  3. Happy Birthday: Main House 3F, Attic – Take ladder in the Kids' Room to the attic. It's in the cupboard there.
  4. Old Videotape: Wrecked Ship 3F, Security – Story-related and can't be missed.

That's a Spicy Meat-a-ball (20)

Kill an enemy by attaching a Remote Bomb to them and detonating it.

On the Wrecked Ship, you'll watch the fourth videotape with Eveline in order to progress the story. During the videotape sequence, you'll find a pair of Remote Bombs in an open cupboard at the end of a hall on the S2 level of the ship.

  1. Equip the Remote Bombs.
  2. Find an enemy– there's one behind a nearby door.
  3. When the Molded grabs you, a prompt will pop up that says 'Attach Remote Bomb.'Press the fire button (Right Trigger on Xbox) to attach it.
  4. The bomb will automatically explode after two seconds, killing the enemy.

Into the Depths (20)

Escape from the ship.

Story related and can't be missed.

After the Mia boss fight on the Wrecked Ship, you'll leave the ship and head to the Swamp.

Pelicans in Your Pocket (40)

Obtain all of the Antique Coins in Easy or Normal difficulty.

Resident Evil 7

There are 18 Antique Coins on Easy or Normal difficulty. If you collect one but die before saving the game or reaching a checkpoint, you'll need to get it again for it to count towards the Achievement.

The first Ancient Coin is located in the Guest House and requires special action be taken during the first videotape sequence. You'll run across the final one while playing as Mia on the Wrecked Ship. You must collect all 18 coins in one playthrough.

Stay tuned for our Collectibles Guide for detailed descriptions of each collectible location!

The Devil Is in the Details (40)

Read all of the files in a single playthrough.

Resident Evil 7

There are 32 Files in the game. Picking up an item that counts as a file is not enough, you must also read the item for it to count. If you read a file but die before saving the game or reaching a checkpoint, you'll need to read it again for it to count towards the Achievement. As the Achievement description states, you must collect all 32 files in one playthrough.

You can check your files found by pressing the Map button and then switching to the Files tab. Any missed files will appear as question marks between the other files names. Here's the full list of files in the order you should find them:

  1. Email from Mia
  2. List of Names (Front)
  3. List of Names (Back)
  4. Home-improvement Store Receipt
  5. Newspaper Article – Missing People
  6. Newspaper Article – Over 20 Missing
  7. Jack's Journal
  8. Jack's Memo
  9. Travis' Memo (Front)
  10. Travis' Memo (Back)
  11. Incinerator Room Memo
  12. Memo About Relief
  13. Doctor's Letter
  14. Zoe's Investigation Notes
  15. Marguerite's Warning
  16. Serum Documentation
  17. Marguerite's Notebook
  18. Memo on Deputy's Head
  19. Lucas' Journal
  20. Torn Page from Journal
  21. Clock Memo
  22. Memo on Burnt Corpse
  23. Giovanni's Will (Wrecked Ship – You play as Mia in this area.)
  24. Jim's Letter (Wrecked Ship)
  25. Orders (Wrecked Ship)

  31. R&D Report [1 of 2]
  32. R&D Report [2 of 2]

Stay tuned for our Collectibles Guide for detailed descriptions of each collectible location!

Mr. Nowhere (40)

Destroy all Mr. Everywhere statuettes.

Resident Evil 7

There are 20 Mr. Everywhere statuettes in the game. Destroying a statuette with melee or ranged weapons counts as collecting it. If you destroy one but die before saving the game or reaching a checkpoint, you'll need to destroy it again for it to count towards the Achievement.

The first Mr. Everywhere is located in the Laundry Room of the Main House. You'll run across the final one during your return trip to the Guest House at the end of the game. Mr. Everywhere statuettes carry over between playthroughs, so you don't technically have to find them all in one go – but you might as well.

Stay tuned for our Collectibles Guide for detailed descriptions of each collectible location!

Just A Memory Now (40)

Get ending 2.

After defeating the boss in the Boat House, you'll be given a choice of curing two different people with a serum. Cure Zoe to get the bad ending. This involves an additional boss fight later in the game, so we're knocking it out on our first playthrough.

Playing it Safe (20)

Complete the game on Easy.

Your first two playthroughs should be on Easy difficulty. You'll know the end is approaching when you complete the Salt Mine area and return to the Guest House.

For beating the game for the first time, you'll unlock the Albert-01R handgun (which will appear in your Item Box in subsequent playthroughs) and Madhouse difficulty.

Second Playthrough on Easy Difficulty (Speedrun)

Resident Evil 7

The objects of your second playthrough will be to beat the game in less than four hours, without opening the item box more than three times, and without using more than three First Aid meds. The rewards you get for these goals will make your final playthrough on Madhouse difficulty much easier.

Just Get Me Outta Here (50)

Complete the game within 4 hours.

This should take 2-3 hours if following a guide or (https://youtu.be/MojO8HI2ra0). A few tips:

  • Play on Easy difficulty.
  • Pausing does not add to your time, so always pause while looking up help.
  • Retrying after dying does add to your time, so reload a manual save if you die or find that you've wasted too much time.
  • Whenever possible, run past enemies instead of fighting them.
  • Good luck!

Resource Manager (50)

Complete the game without opening the Item Box more than 3 times.

There are three places in which you must use the item box:

  1. Testing area (1): You must deposit all your equipment in the nearby party box to enter the Party Room.
  2. Testing area (2): After leaving the Party Room, take the Crank and D-Series Arm.
  3. Swamp safe room: When you reach the Swamp safe room after exiting the Wrecked Ship, take as many weapons as you can (including the Albert-01R, machine gun, shotgun, and grenade launcher), as well as the Tissue Samples needed to create the E-Necrotoxin.

Whatever you do, never interact with item boxes outside of those instances!

That said, dying during boss battles will bring up the Item Management option. You can take equipment out during those moments without it counting against the Achievement. But since we're trying to beat the game in less than four hours, you might be better off reloading a manual save instead.

Walk it Off (50)

Complete the game using only 3 First Aid Meds or less.

Be sure to play on Easy for this one, as enemies do less damage. Note that both Herbs and First Aid Meds count against the Achievement , so avoid using either of them unless it's absolutely critical and you haven't healed three times yet. You're better off reloading a manual save than healing after a major blunder.

Luckily, Steroids heal you (and increase your overall health capacity) but don't count against the Achievement. There are four them in total:

  1. Main House Drawing Room: Get the Treasure Photo from the Main House Processing Room. Head to the Drawing Room and use the photo to find the Steroids hidden behind a brick in the fireplace.
  2. Main House Yard safe room: Inside the trailer, use three Antique Coins to open the bird cage and get the Steroids.
  3. Testing Area 1F: The small room on the east, next to the Barn, is boobytrapped with four explosives. Shoot them, and then you'll find the Steroids in the locker.
  4. Salt Mine Laboratory: Located on the ground behind some bathtubs.

End of the Night (40)

Get ending 1.

After defeating the boss in the Boat House, you'll be given a choice of curing two different people with a serum. Cure Mia to get the good ending. This allows you to avoid a boss fight later on, which will help with your speedrun and Madhouse playthroughs.

Third playthrough on Madhouse Difficulty

Resident Evil 7

After completing the game once on Easy or Normal, you'll unlock Madhouse difficulty. Save this for your final playthrough, as you'll want to bring as many unlockables from previous playthroughs as possible.

The Nightmare's Finally Over (20)

Complete the game on Normal.

Although you could opt to play on Normal difficulty for your first playthrough, it's more efficient to simply beat the game on Madhouse difficulty after unlocking everything else in Easy playthroughs. Difficulty Achievements are stackable, so you can get this one by beating Madhouse.

For beating Normal difficulty, you'll unlock The Secrets of Defense, a scroll that reduces damage taken from blocking enemy attacks. It will appear in your Item Box in subsequent playthroughs. If you choose to beat Normal on your first playthrough, this item can potentially make your final Madhouse playthrough a little easier.

Mad Pelicans (40)

Obtain all of the Antique Coins in Madhouse difficulty.

Madhouse difficulty has 33 Antique Coins. If you collect one but die before saving the game or reaching a checkpoint, you'll need to get it again for it to count towards the Achievement.

The first Ancient Coin is located in the Guest House and requires special action be taken during the first videotape sequence, just like on Easy and Normal. You'll run across the final one in the Swamp after leaving the Wrecked Ship. You must collect all 18 coins in one playthrough.

Stay tuned for our Collectibles Guide for detailed descriptions of each collectible location!

Who's Your Daddy Now? (40)

Complete the game on Madhouse.

Madhouse difficulty unlocks after beating the game once on Easy or Normal. This is the most challenging difficulty due to the following changes:

  1. Checkpoint autosaves are rare.
  2. Manual saves are no longer unlimited. Saving now requires Cassette Tape items, much like the ink ribbons in classic Resident Evil games.
  3. Enemies are faster and do more damage.
  4. Enemies appear in new locations and in greater numbers.
  5. Some items appear in different locations. There are fewer items.

Be sure to build the M21 shotgun, and bring the Circular Saw you got from the speedrun playthrough to every boss fight starting with the Morgue battle. Choose to save Mia so that you don't have to fight her later in the game. Good luck!

Beating Madhouse difficulty unlocks Infinite Ammo for all ranged weapons. Should you somehow have missed any other Achievements, this will make going back for them much easier.

Should you buy a refurbished Surface Pro?

Surface Pro 4

If you want a Surface Pro, is a certified refurbished option the way to go?

Microsoft will sell you a refurbished Surface Pro 3 or Surface Pro 4 in various configurations, and as you'd expect the starting prices are lower than if you went and bought a brand new one.

But refurbished isn't new, by definition. It's a used product made good again. So what do you actually get, and is it worth the investment?

The cost

Surface Pro 3

Based on current Microsoft Store pricing, here's what you're looking at for a certified refurbished Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4

Surface Pro 3

ProcessorStorageRAMPrice
Core i364GB4GB$429
Core i5128GB4GB$499
Core i7512GB8GB$989

Surface Pro 4

ProcessorStorageRAMPrice
Core m3128GB4GB$639
Core i5128GB4GB$729
Core i5256GB8GB$979
Core i7256GB8GB$1,279
Core i7256GB16GB$1,449
Core i7512GB16GB$1,789

The Surface Pro 3 is a last-gen product so there's no current pricing to compare to, but $499 for the 128GB Core i5 model is the best value you can currently get.

The Surface Pro 4 has recently had some price cuts and starts right now at $699 for the 128GB Core m3 model, so refurbed versions offer less savings. You have to go up to the Core i7 256GB with 8GB of RAM to see a savings of $220, which might make a bit more sense. At the lower end, you save less than $100, and frankly, you'd be better off stumping for the brand new ones.

What does certified refurbished mean?

Surface Pro 4

Each refurbished product is a pre-owned device that Microsoft puts through a rigorous course of love and care, with new parts and repairs when necessary.

As part of the refurb process, each Microsoft-Certified Refurbished Product:

  • is screened and tested to be fully functional.
  • is reloaded with the Windows OS and software updates.
  • is put through a thorough cleaning process and cosmetic inspection.
  • is repackaged with appropriate manuals, cables and power cord in a new box.

When you receive your product it should be indistinguishable from a brand new one. You also get a 12-month limited warranty from Microsoft with all refurbished products should anything go wrong.

Should you buy one?

Surface Pro 3

There's no reason not to buy a refurbed device from Microsoft, because you're getting a professionally-refurbished Surface Pro at a discount price directly from the source. If you want an older, cheaper Surface Pro 3 this is probably a better idea than buying a used model from a third-party.

However, if you're looking at the Surface Pro 4 it only really makes sense at the higher-end, so you get substantial savings. Sure, savings are savings, but at the lower end you won't save enough with recent price drops to justify taking the plunge.

How to use the Find on page function in Edge for Windows 10

How do I search for specific text on a page using the Edge browser?

Edge for Windows 10's"Find on page" tool has a couple of features that make it particularly useful when dealing with a lot of text on a web page. To help you find what you're looking for faster, let's take a look at how to find specific text in Edge.

How to find text on a web page using Edge

First, you need to know how to search for a word or phrase on a web page.

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the web page where you want to search for text.

Launch Edge. Navigate to a web page.

  3. Click the More button in the top-right corner of the window. (It looks like three dots.)
  4. Click Find on page. (You can also use the Ctrl + F shortcut on your keyboard to forego steps three and four.)

Click the More button. Click Find on Page.

  5. Type a word or phrase. Edge automatically moves to the first instance of that word or phrase.
  6. Click the right and left arrows in the Find on page taskbar at the top of the screen to move through instances of the word or phrase. You can also hit Enter on your keyboard to advance.

Type a word or phrase. Click the right and left arrows.

How to add search parameters to Edge's "Find on page"

If the standard search isn't enough to find what you're looking for, you can add parameters. Here's how:

  1. Launch Edge from your Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the web page where you'd like to search for text.
  3. Click the More button in the top-right corner of the window. (It looks like three dots.)

Navigate to a web page. Click the More button.

  4. Click Find on page. (You can also use the Ctrl + F shortcut on your keyboard to forego steps three and four.)
  5. Type a word or phrase. Edge automatically moves to the first instance of the word or phrase.

Click Find on Page. Type a word or phrase.

  6. Click the dropdown arrow next to Options.
  7. Click one or both search option(s). Options include:
    • Match whole word — Only whole words will show up. For example, if you search for "his", the word "history" won't show up.
    • Match case — Only words typed in the same case will display.

Click the dropdown arrow. Click a search option.

Do you use Edge's Find on Page? If so, do you take advantage of the word- and case-match features, or do you stick with the tried and true Ctrl + F method?

What is Kodi, and how do you use it on Windows 10?

Kodi

Have you heard folks talking about this "Kodi" thing, and you're wondering what it's all about? Here's a quick beginner's guide.

Kodi is a favorite among cord cutters and digital media fanatics, and it has a long history. Born from what was once called Xbox Media Center (XBMC), the platform owes its roots to Microsoft's very first gaming console.

Times change and Kodi has grown a lot since then. It's open source and available on a whole range of devices, which sadly doesn't include the Xbox One right now. However, you can get Kodi on Windows 10, and as a result, just about anything that runs Windows 10.

Here's what you need to know.

What is Kodi?

Kodi

Kodi is an open-source media center app that's been continually developed for more than a decade. It's one of the most complete media centers you'll find anywhere, allowing you to consolidate all your media — videos, music and photos — in one place, with a customizable interface.

There's also a huge library of third-party add-ons available within Kodi — some legal, some ... less so — which provide access to a range of streaming services. Kodi is widely available, with builds available for nearly all OSes and devices.

One of Kodi's biggest strengths is how easy it is to use. Sure, there's a ton of things you can do with it and a range of customizations you can make, but the base service is simple to set up and get going with. With version 17, Krypton, the new stock skin adds a touch of style and an easy-to-navigate user interface for all screen sizes.

Find out more on the official website, Kodi.tv.

How to get Kodi on Windows 10

Kodi

Kodi 17 with stock skin installed via the Windows Store

The easiest way to get Kodi on your Windows 10 machine is to download it from the Windows Store. The latest version is all packaged up and ready to roll. You just have to download it — see the link below — and open it like any other app.

Download Kodi from the Windows Store

You can also download it directly from Kodi.tv as a traditional .exe file, which works for anyone not using Windows 10. Here you can also get yourself the latest nightly build, if you like living on the bleeding edge.

Kodi and Xbox One

Xbox One S

Despite its Xbox-based origins, Kodi cannot be used on the current Xbox One console. That's a shame, but it's also not entirely the fault of the Kodi developers. That doesn't mean you can't unify Kodi and Xbox, though, and thanks to the HDMI input on the rear of the console you can cheat your way to a one-box-for-everything solution.

We've got a full guide on exactly what you'll need to do to use Kodi with your Xbox One:

How to use Kodi on the Xbox One

Getting started

Kodi

When you first set up Kodi it will be completely empty. You have to add sources of media, and there are a bunch of legal add-ons available right out of the box in the official Kodi repository. These include YouTube, Twitch and OneDrive, as well as some services provided by cable TV networks, news channels and the Smithsonian Museum. It's not limited to video, either, so you can also pull in music and photos to your Kodi setup.

It's also worth getting a remote app for your phone, if you don't want to use a keyboard and mouse or you don't have a suitable hardware remote. If you're a Windows 10 Mobile user there's no official app like the one for Android, but you're not completely out of luck. Try this third party app for a nifty phone-based remote:

Download mrRemote for Kodi from the Windows Store

If you want a piece of hardware that's not too intrusive when you're kicking back relaxing, mini keyboards such as the Rii i8 are a great choice. They're cheap and work great with Kodi.

So that's how you get started with Kodi on Windows 10. It's a simple process and doesn't require that you set up an account or hand over any of personal information. You just download it, open it, and start making it your own.

OneDrive

It's easy to enjoy your OneDrive-stored media on Kodi. Here's how.

Whether you store music, video or photos in OneDrive, if you use Kodi all of that media is at your disposal. OneDrive is housed in the official Kodi repository, meaning it can be one of the first add-ons you install.

Thanks to the ubiquity of Kodi and the fact that it's a common platform no matter which device you run it on, the steps involved are exactly the same. So whether you're on a Windows 10 PC, an Android powered TV box or anything else, you can access OneDrive media from within your media center.

Kodi

The only difference might be where some of the options live on your system. These things can be affected by the build you're on or the skin you're running. In this post, we're using Kodi 17 Krypton with the stock skin.

How to set up Kodi on OneDrive.

  1. Select add-ons from the side-bar.

    Kodi

  2. Next, select download from the side-bar, and then choose video add-ons.

  3. Scroll all the way down the list until you find the OneDrive add-on.

    Kodi

  4. After you click to open it, find and hit the install button.

    Kodi

  5. When it's ready to roll you'll see a message pop up in the top right-hand corner.
  6. Go back to your add-ons page as detailed above and select the newly installed OneDrive add-on.
  7. Select add an account.

    Kodi

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to link your OneDrive account.

    Kodi

The OneDrive add-on has no limits on the number of accounts you can connect, so if you have multiple accounts just repeat the steps above. Once you're logged in, you can browse through OneDrive folders and play any supported media using Kodi.

How to open websites with Internet Explorer when using Edge for Windows 10

How do I open web pages with Internet Explorer from within Edge?

Microsoft Edge is Internet Explorer's (IE) successor, and there's no doubt it does a lot of stuff better than the aging browser. IE hasn't been completely forgotten, however, and you might come across some older sites — including those that use ActiveX — that will not function properly in Edge. In these cases, you can easily switch over to IE without leaving Edge.

How to open a web page in Internet Explorer using Edge

When you come across a website that won't load properly in Microsoft Edge, you can most likely get it to work in IE.

  1. Launch Edge from the Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to a webpage that won't load.

Launch Edge. Navigate to a web page.

  3. Click the More button in the top-right corner of the window. (It looks like three dots.)
  4. Click Open with Internet Explorer.

Click the More button. Click Open with Internet Explorer.

A new IE window will open and display the troublesome web page.

How to pin Internet Explorer to your Start menu or taskbar

Would you rather use IE instead of Edge? It would be beneficial, in this case, to pin it to your Start menu or taskbar for easy access.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Search.

Right-click the Start button. Click Search.

  3. Type Internet Explorer.
  4. Right-click Internet Explorer.
  5. Click a pin option. Choose from:

    • Pin to Start — A tile for IE will appear in your Start menu.
    • Pin to taskbar — A button for IE will show up in your taskbar.

Type Internet Explorer. Right-click Internet Explorer.

Are you still hanging on to the good old days of IE, or have you accepted Edge? Tell us why in the comments.

How to find the right color profile for your monitor using Windows 10

0
0

Colors don't look right on your Windows 10 PC? Use this guide to get the correct color profile for your display.

Accurate color representation on a monitor is critical for any photographer, for anyone who edits videos, and even for gamers, because all displays are not created equally, and they render colors differently. So it's important to use the correct color profile to make sure your Windows 10 device shows colors as accurately as possible.

A color profile is a set of data that tells the OS how colors should be displayed. Only when the correct profile is installed on your computer for an image device (a monitor, camera, printer, or scanner) will you experience color accuracy as intended by the company that designed that device.

If there isn't a correct profile associated with your device, colors could look washed out or otherwise off on your screen. In other words, even though the OS does a pretty good job with color management, without a proper profile, colors could look a lot different than they would in real life or on paper.

If colors don't render correctly on your display, chances are that's not due to a problem with the monitor. It's likely that your computer is either not using the custom profile created by your display manufacturer or it's using the wrong profile.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to use Color Management to install the proper color profile on your computer, to get the best color representation on your monitor.

How to get the correct color profile for your monitor

Usually, manufacturers bundle their color profiles as .icm files within the display-driver packages that you can download from the web, or inside the disks that come with the monitors.

If you have your disk, simply open it on your computer, and extract the .icm file. If you don't have the disk, the best way to get the color profile you need is to visit your monitor manufacturer's support website and download the latest driver for the device.

This process may be slightly different depending on the manufacturer, but you can use the steps below to get the color profile you need.

  1. Head to your monitor manufacturer's support website.
  2. Using the model number, find and download the latest monitor driver. (Note: You want to get the monitor driver, not the video driver.)

  3. The download usually will be a package file with a .exe or .zip extension. When you find it, double-click the file and extract the content.

Inside the folder, you'll find a .icm file, which is the color profile for your monitor.

How to install the correct color profile for your monitor

The next step is to install the color profile .icm file on your computer. On Windows 10, you'll need to use the Color Management utility.

To install a color profile for your monitor, do the following:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Color Management and click the result.
  3. On the Devices tab, select the display for which you want to change the color profile from the drop-down menu.

Quick Tip: If you have a multi-monitor setup, and you don't know which color profile you want to update, click the Identify monitors button.

  4. Check the Use my settings for this device option.
  5. Click the Add button.

  6. On the Associate Color Profile page, click the Browse button and locate the color profile you extracted earlier.

  7. Double-click the .icm file to install the new profile.
  8. Click Close to complete the task.

Once you complete these steps, you may notice that colors on your screen changed a bit. This is expected because you're telling the OS how to display the correct colors for your monitor.

If something goes wrong, or you simply want to revert the changes, you can follow the same steps mentioned above, but this time on step 3, click the Profiles button, and select Reset my settings to the system defaults.

Wrapping things up

Color Management on Windows 10 gives you an easy way to install custom color profiles. However, remember that most of the time, other devices, such as cameras, printers, and scanners, install their color profile automatically during the installation of the device drivers. You usually only have to worry about setting the proper color profile for your monitor.

In this guide, we're just scratching the surface on the topic, and there is a lot more to learn about color management. However, these simple steps will help you make sure colors look as natural as possible on your device.

Resident Evil 7 Guide: How to get the Burner flamethrower

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the latest and most frightening entry in Capcom's popular survival horror series. With the switch to a first-person view comes a new threat in the form of the homicidal Baker family. And that means more scares than ever before.

As a special bonus for Xbox gamers, Resident Evil 7 also happens to be an Xbox Play Anywhere title. If you buy the game digitally from the Windows Store, you get access to both the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions, with full cross-save support.

Burning love

Several Resident Evil 7 weapons require a little construction or going through multi-part puzzles, including the Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, and the Burner. The Burner is a flamethrower that you'll need to remove vast insect hives from the Old House. It also proves highly effective against the insects spawned by the Green House boss.

Although you can find a Blueprint for the Burner in the Old House that tells you which parts you'll need, it's more efficient to simply collect the components and combine them without the Blueprint. You'll only need to find three things: the Burner Nozzle and Burner Grip, plus some Burner Fuel.

You can pick up the Burner parts in any order, but we'll start with the Grip.

Locate the Burner Grip

Resident Evil 7 Guide: How to get the Burner flamethrower

  1. From the Main House Yard, head northeast to the Old House.
  2. Our destination is the Gallery, which you might've already visited in the Mia videotape. It's a small room with a plinth (pedestal) in the center.
  3. From the Old House entrance, take the left path to the Guest Room, which leads to the hallway with the crate that Mia used to hide from Marguerite.
  4. Inside this hall, head left towards the door. Pick up the Old House Map from the dresser and the Burner Fuel beneath it.
  5. Head through the Gallery and out onto the deck behind it.
  6. Just to the left on the deck, you'll find the Burner Grip inside a plastic pot.
  7. You can also head west across the bridge to the Safe House, if needed.

Find the Burner Nozzle

Resident Evil 7 Guide: How to get the Burner flamethrower

  1. Go back to the hallway with the crate, and this time take the door to the east.
  2. From the Dining Room, exit through the northern door to the boardwalk.
  3. Take the boardwalk to the Water Station on the east.
  4. Collect the Burner Nozzle and an Herb from inside the Station.
  5. Make sure to grab the Psychostimulants and Lockpick from the porch while you're outside.

Combine and conquer

Resident Evil 7 Guide: How to get the Burner flamethrower

  1. Now that you have both parts of the Burner, it's time to build it!
  2. Press the Inventory button (Y button on Xbox One).
  3. Select either Burner component and choose the Combine option.
  4. Choose the other component.
  5. You now have the Burner, which will take care of bug nests and make the big Green House fight much easier.

If you need more Burner Fuel, you can make more by combining Solid Fuel and Chem Fluid. You'll need to do this once anyway as part of the "1st Place at the Science Fair"Achievement.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a game that Xbox fans with a stomach for horror won't want to miss. And because it's an Xbox Play Anywhere title, Windows 10 gamers won't have to miss out either.

How to back up data in Outlook 2016 for Windows

How do I back up my Outlook email, contact, calendar and other data to an archive file that I can save or transfer to another computer?

Many reasons exist for why you might want to backup and save your Microsoft Outlook email to an archive file. Maybe you want to transfer that mail to a new Outlook account or a new PC. Or perhaps you want to a back-up copy, to help prevent data loss.

Here's how to create and save a data archive file using Outlook 2016 for Windows.

How to export an Outlook backup file

  1. Open the Outlook 2016 desktop app.
  2. Click the File tab in the top-left corner of the Outlook screen.
  3. Click the Open & Export option in the blue vertical column that appeared on the left side of the page.

  4. Select the Import/Export box to launch the Import and Export Wizard.
  5. Choose the Export to a file option using your mouse or the arrow-up and arrow-down buttons on your keyboard.
  6. Click Next.

  7. Navigate to and highlight the Outlook Data File (.pst) option.
  8. Click Next.

  9. Select the information you want to back up.

    • If you want to back up and archive your entire Outlook account, select the name of your account (often your email address).
    • If you're looking to backup only specific Outlook folders or data, such as your inbox, contacts, calendar or notes, pick the specific folder. You should also make sure that the Include subfolders box below the menu is checked if you want to back up all data within each folder. (Note: You must create individual Outlook backup archives for each folder, unless you back up your entire account. You cannot, for example, create a single backup file for both the Inbox and Calendar folders.)
    • Use the Filter button below the vertical menu options to access advanced back-up filtering features. You could, for example, use the filter to back up only messages in your inbox that include the words "Windows Central." Or you could choose to only back up your unread messages

  10. When you're ready to create your Outlook back-up archive, click Next.
  11. Name your document in the Save exported file as: field.
  12. Choose the location to which you want to save your backup by hitting the Browse button and navigating to your folder of choice.
  13. Next you see options that let you manage duplicate item, if you already saved Outlook backup archives in the past.

    • Replace duplicates with items exported overwrites any existing data with the new data, even if it's the same.
    • Allow duplicate items to be created does not overwrite any existing data and it creates new data, even if it's the same.
    • Do not export duplicate items detects duplicate information and does not export and save any data that already exist.

  14. Click Finish and you'll see a final prompt that asks you if you want to protect your archive with a password. If so, enter and confirm your password and then click OK.

  15. If you don't want to use a password, leave the fields blank and click OK. Your shiny new Outlook data file will then save to your pre-specified location, but be patient, because the process can take a while if your account includes a lot of data.

How to disable notifications while presenting on Windows 10

0

Are notifications keep interrupting at the wrong time? Use this guide to configure Windows 10 to stop notifications while in the middle of a presentation.

Notifications on Windows 10 keep you from missing important alerts, but it can be annoying having them pop up at the wrong time. Like when you're giving a presentation at work or school.

Fortunately, if you get a lot of emails and social media notifications, which keep interrupting in the middle of a presentation, Windows 10 includes a feature to disable notifications, without the need to turn off the feature entirely.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to prevent notifications from appearing while you're giving a presentation.

How to disable notifications while presenting onto a second screen

If Windows 10 keeps interrupting with notifications while doing a presentation on a second screen, but you don't want to turn off the feature completely, then do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Notifications & actions.
  4. Under Notifications, turn on the Hide notifications when I'm duplicating my screen option.

Once you completed the steps, every time you are giving a presentation and you're connected to a projector or secondary monitor, Windows 10 will not show notifications. This option will only work as long as you connect using the "Duplicate" option when projecting (Windows key + P). If you're extending or using only the secondary display, the notifications will continue to flow.

How to disable notifications while presenting onto a single screen

If you're giving a small presentation and you're not not using the second screen, then the above steps won't work. However, you can use Quiet Hours to prevent notifications from appearing at the wrong time.

To turn on Quiet Hours, do the following:

  1. Click the Action Center button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. If you don't see the Quiet Hours button, click the Expand button at the bottom of Action Center.
  3. Click the Quiet Hours button to stop the flow of notifications while presenting to complete the task.

Once you finish your presentation, you'll to need turn off Quiet Hours manually using the same steps mentioned above to see toast notifications again.

Quick Tip: You can also right-click the Action Center button in the Taskbar to turn on or off Quiet Hours on Windows 10.
