These three hidden options make Windows Ink even better

Windows Ink works great with the default settings, but you can make it awesome with these three simple options.

Microsoft really gave us a reason to use a pen on our touch PCs with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. That reason is Windows Ink, and it's a whole new pen experience.

More than just handwriting recognition, there's a new Windows Ink Workspace with three new apps: Sticky Notes, Sketchpad, and Screen sketch.

The new digital ink experience comes enabled by default on devices like Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, with a set of default configurations that work well out of the box, but you can improve your experience by customizing three key features.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to enable Windows Ink on the Lock screen and Sticky Notes insights, and we'll tell you how to get rid of the pen cursor.

1. How to enable Windows Ink above the Lock screen

While you can use Windows Ink when you're signed in to your account, but the Windows 10 also allows you get to the Windows Ink Workspace even when your device is locked.

To enable the Windows Ink Workspace on the Lock screen, do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Devices.
  3. Click on Pen & Windows Ink.
  4. Under Pen shortcuts, configure the Click once drop-down menu to open Windows Ink Workspace.
  5. Select Home from the second drop-down menu.
  6. Turn on the "Click once to open my Windows Ink Workspace notes even when the device is locked" toggle switch.

Now when your computer is locked, you can click the button on your pen once, and the Windows Ink Workspace experience will open, letting you access Sketchpad, Screen sketch, and Sticky Notes. The rest of the PC will remain locked behind your passcode or Windows Hello.

2. How to enable Insights for Sticky Notes

The Anniversary Update also includes a new version of Sticky Notes that is optimized to take advantage of Windows Ink using an active pen. Sticky Notes now also integrates with Cortana to create reminders from your notes. Cool, right? Just one catch: you need to manually enable this feature for it to work.

The feature is called "Insights", and you can use these steps to enable it:

  1. Open Sticky Notes.
  2. On any note, click the three dots (...) menu button on the top-right corner.
  3. Click the Settings (gear) button on the bottom-left corner.
  4. Turn on the Enable insights toggle switch.

Once you enable insights, Cortana will be able to scan the content of your notes, and help you create reminders.

3. How to disable pen cursor while using Windows Ink

Using an active pen to write notes, sketch, or annotate on screenshots is a surprisingly good experience on Windows Ink. However, if you use an active pen on Windows 10, you probably noticed the cursor that appears as you bring the pen towards to the screen.

This pen cursor can add distraction and a lag effect that can hurt the user experience. Fortunately, Windows 10 now includes an option to disable the cursor if it's bothering you.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Devices.
  3. Click on Pen & Windows Ink.
  4. Under the Pen settings, turn off the Show cursor toggle switch.

Now you will no longer see the cursor on the screen while using your Surface Pen or any other pen. Not sure if you want to turn the cursor off? Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll like it.

Wrapping things up

Although the default settings for Windows Ink will work for most people, now you know a few new tips to get even more out of the experience.

How have you customized your Windows Ink preferences? Let us know in the comments!

How to use a local account to fix issues on Windows 10

$

When things aren't working on Windows 10, it could be a problem with your Microsoft account, and this guide walks you through steps to use a local account to fix the issue.

Unless your computer is connected to an enterprise network, the chances are that you use Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, instead of a local account. This is because it's the new type of account Microsoft wants you to use, as it lets you connect all your devices and access virtually every service the company has to offer.

In addition, it makes easier to reset your password, get apps from the Store, and sync settings across devices for a more seamless experience. However, the time will come when you may come across some issues in your account. For example, you may experience unexpected errors trying to update the operating system, accessing apps, and Windows 10 features like Cortana, Action Center, and Start menu not working correctly.

While there are a number of troubleshooting steps you can try for each particular problem, as part of the process, it's also recommended to try using a local administrator account to see if the problem is your Microsoft account setup on your device.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to create a local administrator account to help you troubleshoot issues on your computer, and what to do when you can't fix the original problem.

1. How to create a local Administrator account on Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Family & other people.
  4. Under "Other people", click the Add someone else to this PC button.

  5. Click the I don't have this person's sign-in information link.

  6. Click the Add a user without a Microsoft account link.

  7. Type the information required to create a local account.
  8. Click Next.

Changing account type to Administrator

Windows 10 by default sets new accounts as Standard, this means you'll need to change the account type manually to Administrator.

  1. While in Family & other people, select the local account and click Change account type.

  2. In the drop-down menu, change the account type to Administrator.
  3. Click OK to complete the task.

2. Troubleshooting your PC with an Administrator local account

Once you've completed the steps mentioned above, restart your computer, and sign-in to the newly created Administrator local account.

The next step is to check whether the same problem you have in your Microsoft account is also occurring in other accounts.

If everything is working properly in the new account, then you now have a pretty good idea of what could be the problem. For example, if you were experiencing sudden system freeze or Cortana wasn't opening, then chances are that it's not an issue with the operating system, and it may just be a problem with your profile, as a result of misconfiguration or something that just broke.

Now that you have an idea of the problem, you can use a different troubleshooting strategy to resolve the particular issue. In case you have any questions, you can also head over the forums on Windows Central to seek help.

3. How to move to a new Windows 10 account

If you can't fix the problem and the newly created account works correctly, as an alternative solution, you can move all your files, settings, apps to the new account and then simply delete the broken account.

To start fresh with a new account, do the following:

Moving your files to a new account

  1. While in the new local account, use the Windows key + E keyboard shortcut to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC from the left pane.
  3. Under "Devices and drives", double-click to open the C: drive.
  4. Double-click the Users folder.

  5. Find your old account's folder and double-click it.
  6. If you get a dialog box saying "You don't currently have permission to access this folder", click Continue, as your administrator account will grant you access.
  7. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  8. Type the following command line:

    %HOMEPATH%.

  9. Click OK to open a second instance of File Explorer in your new profile home folder.

  10. Using the Windows key + left arrow keyboard shortcut snap your new home folder to the left side of the screen.
  11. When Snap assist pops up, choose to snap your old home folder to the right side.
  12. Move the content inside the folders in the right side (old account) to the same folders in the left (new account).

Once you completed that task, make sure you can access all your applications. In some cases, you may need to reinstall some apps due to the fact some programs can only be installed per account, not per computer. You may also need to reactivate some of them, so make sure to have the product key ready just in case.

Deleting your old account

After moving all your files and applications, you'll need to delete your old account (the one with the problem), in order to be able to merge your new account with a Microsoft account.

To remove the Windows 10 account with the problem do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Family & other people.
  4. Your old account will now appear under "Other people", select it, and click Remove.

  5. Make sure to understand what will happen after deleting the account from your computer and click Delete account and data.

Merging Administrator and Microsoft accounts

After deleting your old account, you can now merge your Microsoft and the new Administrator accounts together using the following steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Your info.
  4. Click the Sign in with a Microsoft account instead link.

  5. Type your Microsoft account information and click Sign in.

  6. You'll now be prompted to enter your current Administrator local account password one last time. From here on out, you'll only need to sign in with your Microsoft account.
  7. Click Next to continue.

  8. Choose whether to set up a pin password or click the Skip this step to complete this process.

Now all your information and Windows settings stored in the cloud will sync to your computer. However, some settings won't sync until you complete verifying your account.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Sync your settings.
  4. Click the Verify link and follow the on-screen instructions to verify your account.

Wrapping things up

After following these instructions, there is a very good chance that you won't see the same problem on your device again. However, if you come across another issue, you can always repeat these steps to start fresh with a clean account.

Were you able to fix the problem on your Windows 10 PC? Tell us in the comments below.

How to set up and manage a Realm in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta

How do I play multiplayer in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta?

Multiplayer in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta works a bit different than the old Java version of Minecraft. If you can't get together for a LAN party, at least one of your friends must purchase a Realm subscription — there is a one month free trial to test things out — and, depending on what subscription they choose, can invite up to ten friends from Xbox Live.

Realms are hosted by Mojang and are therefore quite a bit more secure than the third-party hosted sites you regularly find on Java Minecraft. The downside is you have to know at least one person paying for a Realm to play multiplayer. Want that one person with a Realm to be you? Here's how to set up and manage your own Realm in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta.

How to create a Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta Realm

  1. Launch Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta from your Start menu or desktop.
  2. Click Play.

Launch Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. Click Play.

Click on a number of users you would like your Realm to support. Click the checkbox beside I agree to the terms and conditions.

  11. Click the Create for $XX button. Depending on what you chose in the menu, you might have to pay now for the realm. If you kept the default options, it will let you create a Realm for free for a trial period.
  12. Type your Microsoft account password.

  13. Click Sign in.
  14. Click Get.

How to create reminders using Cortana on Windows 10

$

Start being more productive and let Cortana handle your reminders, so you don't miss any important events anymore. Here's how to use Cortana on Windows 10 to create reminders.

It doesn't matter how you organize your day. It always seems like there is never enough time in the day to get everything done. Then you realize that you've completed a lot of tasks, but you forgot many others, which can be as simple as forgetting to take a break for lunch or missing an important business appointment. In moments like these, you can appreciate Cortana on Windows 10 helping you to remember important events.

Among all the features Cortana has to offer, perhaps one of the most useful is the ability to create reminders. On Windows 10, you can quickly create many types of reminders based on different conditions, such as location, time, or person.

Here we'll show you how you can use Cortana to create reminders on Windows 10 to help you be more productive and stop missing out on important events.

How to create simple reminders using Cortana

When you have an idea or you remember something important you have to do later on the day, you can quickly create a simple reminder before you forget.

To create a simple reminder, do the following:

  1. Open Cortana.
  2. Click the hamburger button on the top-left.
  3. Click the Reminders option on your mobile device (or click Notebook, and then select Reminders on a Windows 10 PC).
  4. Click the add new reminder "+" button from the bottom-right corner.

  5. Complete the required information.
  6. Click Save to complete the task.

Alternatively, you can quickly create a reminder using the search box:

  1. Open Cortana.
  2. On the search box type a reminder, like this:

Remind me to take out the trash

  3. Press Enter to complete the task.

In the above command, I started by typing "Remind me", which triggers Cortana to create a new reminder. You can also use similar wording, for example:

  • Remind take out the trash
  • Reminder take out the trash

It's worth pointing out that you're no longer required to specify a time to create a reminder, which makes the entire process a lot easier and faster.

How to create Cortana reminders using voice commands

Microsoft has designed Cortana to work with a keyboard and mouse as well as using natural language. At any time, you can use your voice to control the assistant to create a new reminder, but the functionality will work slightly different if you don't turn on "Hey Cortana" on your device.

If you don't have "Hey Cortana" enabled on your device, this is how you create reminders:

  1. Use the Windows key + Shift + C keyboard shortcut to open Cortana on listening mode, or click the microphone button in the search box to open the assistant.
  2. Use natural language to ask Cortana to remind you anything, for example:

    • Remind me to watch the car
    • Remind me to talk to Jennifer next time a leave home
    • Remind me to take the trash out every Sunday
    • Remind me to pick up some food for the party tomorrow at 12 P.M.

If "Hey Cortana" is enabled on your device, you don't have to use any shortcuts, simply say "Hey Cortana" followed by the command.

For example:

  • "Hey Cortana : Remind me to pay the rent on Wednesday at 3 P.M."
  • "Hey Cortana: Remind me to do laundry on Monday"
  • "Hey Cortana: Remind me to meet with John to discuss the new contract on Friday at 9 A.M."

You can use voice commands to create any reminder, except link-based reminders, which you'll learn how to do in this guide a little later.

How to create Cortana reminders using Sticky Notes

Starting with the Anniversary Update, Windows 10 includes a new version of Sticky Notes, which let you use handwriting to create notes. In addition, Cortana now can scan your notes and help you create reminders based on the content you wrote.

To create reminders using Sticky Notes, do the following:

  1. Open Sticky Notes.
  2. Use your keyboard and mouse or pen using Windows Ink to create a note.
  3. Cortana will scan and highlight with blue color the relevant content (e.g., time, place, and phone number). Click on the content you want to use to create a reminder.
  4. Click the Add Reminder button that appears at the bottom of the note.
  5. Cortana will take a screenshot of the note and add all the relevant information into a new reminder.
  6. Customize as necessary, and click Remind to confirm and complete the task.

How to create photo reminders using Cortana

If you use a Windows 10 tablet, Windows phone, Android device, or an iPhone, you can quickly take a picture of a product label, shopping list that someone wrote on a piece of paper, or anything, and have Cortana remind you of it the next time you're in the store.

To create a photo reminder, do the following:

  1. Open Cortana.
  2. Click the hamburger button on the top-left.
  3. Click the Reminders option on your mobile device (or click Notebook, and then select Reminders on a Windows 10 PC).
  4. Click the add new reminder "+" button from the bottom-right corner.

  5. Click the Add photo button.
  6. Click Camera to take a picture of the item. (If you already have the picture, use the Library option instead.)
  7. Click Save to complete the task.

How to create location-based reminders using Cortana

Cortana can also remind you about certain things you need to do when you arrive or leave a particular location.

To create a location-based reminder, do the following:

  1. Open Cortana.
  2. Click the hamburger button on the top-left.
  3. Click the Reminders option on your mobile device (or click Notebook, and then select Reminders on a Windows 10 PC).
  4. Click the add new reminder "+" button from the bottom-right corner.

  5. Type your text reminder in the "Reminder to..." field.
  6. Click on Place.
  7. Select from the drop-down menu to get reminded when you Arrive or Leave a specific place.
  8. Type the address, name of the place, the kind of place, or anything that can help Cortana to pinpoint the location.
  9. Click Done.
  10. Click Remind to complete the task.

Here are a couple voice command examples to create a location-based reminders:

  • Remind me to water the plants when I get home

Please note that Cortana will know what "when I get home" means as long you have set your physical address using the Maps app.

How to create time-based reminders using Cortana

For those times when you need to remember to do something during a particular time, Cortana can quickly create a reminder based on a specific time you assign:

To create a reminder using a specific time, do the following:

  6. Click on Time.
  7. Select from one of default time range, including 30 minutes, 1 hour, tomorrow, or simply click the Another time option.
  8. If you choose "Another time", click the default time, and select a custom time.
  9. Customize as necessary, and click Remind to complete the task.

Here's a voice command example to create a time-based reminder:

  • Remind me to watch the game tonight at 8 P.M.
  • Remind me to go to the gym every Wednesday evening

How to create person-based reminders using Cortana

Similar to time and location, you can create reminders based on a person, but for the feature to work, the person you want to add has to be part of your contacts list in the People app.

  6. Click on Person.
  7. Pick a person from your contact list.
  8. Click Remind to complete the task

Here's a voice command example to create a person-based reminder:

  • Remind me next time I talk to Diego to get details about the party

How to create link-based reminders using Cortana

Let's say you found a great pair of shoes online, but for some reason, you can't buy them until next week. Or there is a really interesting article you came across online, but you just don't have the time to finish reading it. For these and other similar situations, you can share the link using Cortana to create a reminder.

To create a link-based reminder, do the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the web page you're want to use to create a reminder.
  3. Click the Share button.
  4. When the Share flyout opens from the right side, click the Cortana Reminders option.

  5. Cortana will automatically set up a reminder based on the link.
  6. Type your text reminders in the "Reminder to..." field.
  7. Choose when to be reminded (e.g., person, place, or time) as necessary.
  8. Click Save to complete the task.

It's worth pointing out that this type of reminder not only works with Microsoft Edge, but it also works with any app that includes support to share content with other apps. For example, using the Windows Store, File Explorer (see image below), and Windows Store apps.

How to interact with Cortana reminders on Windows 10

Once you create a new reminder, Cortana will upload this information to the cloud to your Microsoft account, and from there the reminder will sync to all your devices where the assistant is available. This means that no matter where you have created the reminder, Cortana will let you know on any supported device.

For example, if you use a Windows 10 PC or Mobile device, you'll get an interactive toast notification reminding you of a particular event. Notifications will also feature a hero image if you created a reminder using a photo, or you'll get a button to open a link if you created a link-based reminder. In addition, you'll get a button to snooze the reminder for a few minutes to a few hours, up to one day, and a button to set the reminder as complete.

How to manage Cortana reminders on Windows 10

At any time, you can review, edit, archive, or delete any reminder that you have created using Cortana -- just do the following:

  1. Open Cortana.
  2. Click the hamburger button on the top-left.
  3. Click the Reminders option on your mobile device (or click Notebook, and then select Reminders on a Windows 10 PC).

In this page, you'll find all your reminders ordered by date, and at the bottom of the list, you'll find the other reminders, which don't have any particular time on them.

To update, click on the reminder, and modify as necessary. If you've already completed the task, check the "Complete and move to History" option, or click the trash button at the bottom to delete the reminder.

If you want to remove or set as complete one or multiple reminders at once, click the select button at the bottom of the page, check the items, and click the complete (check) button or the delete (trash) button.

Perhaps the best thing using Cortana is that you can manage reminders from any device you're signed in with your Microsoft account. In addition, thanks to universal dismiss technology available with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can quickly dismiss a notification on one device, and have it dismiss on all your other devices.

Wireless Printer

Don't you just despise those times when you need to quickly print something but your printer is packed away somewhere, or you need to keep plugging in a pesky USB cable? Picking up a wireless printer will allow for remote access to the peripheral, enabling Windows 10 to print, fax and scan without being physically attached to the unit. Let's take a look at how to set up your wireless printer in Windows 10.

For this guide, I'll be using my trusty HP 4500, but any wireless printer or all-in-one should work just fine. Note that we'll be looking at direct connections. Should you be interested in learning more about HomeGroup in Windows 10, be sure to check out our in-depth guide, which will enable you to set up and configure the sharing of printers and content.

Connecting your printer

Let's take a quick look at how to add your wireless printer in Windows 10.

  1. Open Cortana by pressing Windows Key + Q.
  2. Type in "printer."

    Windows 10 Printer

  3. Select Printers & Scanners.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. Refer to the manual to connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Unfortunately, this process varies not just from manufacturer to manufacturer, but often from printer to printer.
  6. Hit Add a printer or scanner.
  7. Select the printer from the results.

Multiple Monitors

When a single monitor just isn't enough for your workflow, you'll need to look at adding a second to increase the amount of real estate available at any given time. We'll be taking a look at how you can set up and configure multiple displays in Windows 10. Thankfully, Microsoft has done a solid job in implementing multiple display support right into Windows so we don't have to install third-party software to fiddle around with settings and whatnot.

Before we get started, you'll need to make sure that all necessary cables are connected to your displays. This includes power, audio and any VGA, DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort cables. Be sure to hit up your display manual if you're confused with which port is which and where cables are connected to. Once both screens are plugged in and ready to go, fire up Windows 10 as we'll need to change a few settings and make sure everything is working as intended.

Microsoft improved how Windows 10 handles the desktop experience, which now has the taskbar on both screens with full Windows menu integration. Should you be a fan of task view, this feature also works on both screens for a quick glance as to what windows are presence on each display.

Switch display modes

Switch Display Modes

There are four display modes available in Windows 10, which can be quickly accessed by hitting Windows + P. This will bring up a sidebar with four options. Depending on whether you're on a laptop or desktop PC, either extend or duplicate will be selected by default. Here's a quick run down on the differences between each option:

  • PC screen only— Only the primary monitor is used.
  • Duplicate— Secondary monitor shows duplicate desktop.
  • Extend— Both monitors combine to offer an extended desktop.
  • Second screen only— Only the secondary monitor is used.

Configuring displays

Display Settings

Customizing displays and how they are managed by Windows is real easy. We'll need to gain access to the display section of the control panel.

  1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose "Display settings".
  2. Choose "identify" to show numbers on corresponding displays. (1 is primary.)

    Windows 10

  3. Re-arrange displays by clicking and dragging the numbered boxes.
  4. Use the scaling slider to make text and other content larger. (Ideal for higher resolutions or impaired vision.)
  5. Choose between landscape or portrait to change the selected display orientation.

    Windows 10

  6. "Multiple displays" allows you to switch display modes (as described in the section above).

Advanced settings

Windows 10

This section of Display settings will enable you to not only play around with display ordering, multiple display profiles and more, but also change various options that aren't available in the main view. Here's how you can use these advanced settings to alter more technical options.

  1. Optional: Select "Color management" to open up the corresponding window for editing ICC profiles.

We only recommend you tweak International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles if you've researched a little and have a rough idea as to what to do. Generally, you should be fine with Windows calibration and altering monitor settings.

    Color Profiles

  2. Choose "Color calibration" to fire up the Windows calibration wizard.
  3. Follow the wizard to calibrate brightness, gamma, colors and contrast.
  4. Follow the links under "Related settings" for further configuration:
    • ClearType text — Change settings for the font smoothing technology used in Windows.
    • Advanced sizing — Alter the size of title bars and more.
    • Display adapter properties — Check the properties of your connected graphics card.

Hide taskbar on displays

Multiple Monitors

If you don't like all apps and even a second taskbar, Windows 10 makes it painless to make some changes.

  1. Right-click the taskbar.
  2. Choose "Settings".
  3. Scroll down to "Multiple Displays."
  4. Toggle "show taskbar on all displays."

Two further options can help you define just what is displayed on the taskbars. The former lets you configure where taskbar app icons are shown, depending on which monitor they're presently using. Choosing "all taskbars" will show all pinned and open apps on both taskbars. The combining labels option lets you choose whether or not Windows will show window titles next to open apps on additional monitor taskbars.

Change wallpapers

Windows 10

With a second monitor connected, it's possible to have a little more fun with wallpapers and really personalize your desktop experience. We'll have a quick look how you can configure everything so a folder full of images are randomly shuffled as desktop wallpapers, with a different image on each screen.

  1. Right-click the desktop.
  2. Choose "Personalize".

    Windows 10 Wallpapers

  3. Select "Slideshow" from the background drop-down menu.
  4. Hit "Browse" under "Choose albums for your slideshow."
  5. Change "30 minutes" to however often you wish a new image to be selected.
  6. Enable shuffle.

    Windows 10 Wallpapers

  7. Ensure "Choose a fit" is selected as "Fill".

Windows 10 will now randomly select a new image every 30 minutes from the folder you selected, displaying a different image on all connected monitors. If you'd prefer to stick with one image for your wallpaper and have one with sufficient resolution to cover connected monitors, switching "Fill" to "Span" in step 7 will have the same image span across all desktops.

How to use Cortana on Windows 10

Cortana is your personal digital assistant on Windows 10 part of the next generation of search, and in this guide will show you how to get the most out of the experience.

The name Cortana by now should sound very familiar. Cortana is your personal digital assistant on Windows 10 to help you find virtually anything on your device, track your packages and flights, inform you about weather and traffic information, manage your calendar and create reminders, and it can even tell you jokes.

About Cortana

Cortana was first introduced on Windows Phone 8.1, and then it made its appearance on the desktop and mobile devices with the release of Windows 10.

Originally the name "Cortana" was the codename of the project when the assistant was still under development. The name comes from the Microsoft's franchise Halo game, where the main character, Master Chief, has his own assistant named Cortana and helps him in a lot of situations and to get out of many jams, which the company felt was an appropriate name.

How Cortana integrates into your digital life

Cortana integrates with the Windows 10 search feature for local searches, and it's also capable of bringing you relevant search results from the web and provide intelligent answers to any question using Microsoft's Bing search engine. Thanks to its ability to connect to the cloud, it works seamlessly on your desktop PC, laptop, tablet, Xbox One, and phone -- even on Android and iPhone using the Cortana app.

In addition, you can interact with Cortana in other products, such as on the Microsoft Edge web browser, and the assistant can also control certain Windows Store apps like Netflix, Twitter, LinkedIn, Hulu, Wikipedia, and many other apps.

The assistant is always at your fingertips, right next to the Start button on your device, or a voice command away, when you use the assistant hands-free with the "Hey Cortana" feature to answer any question and perform many tasks that would otherwise require more of your time.

While Microsoft keeps updating Cortana frequently in the background, the only way to make your experience more personalized over time is by using Cortana on the regular basis.

Ways to use Cortana

On Windows 10, there are two ways you can use Cortana on your PC or Mobile device:

  • With a Microsoft account: You can use Cortana on your device connected with a Microsoft Account, which allows you to access all the features the digital assistant has to offer, such as creating reminders, managing calendar, and getting a more personalized experience.
  • Without a Microsoft account: You can choose to use Cortana without a Microsoft account (even on a local account) but with limited features. For example, you can ask Cortana pretty much anything, but you can't create reminders or get a personalized experience.

How to set up Cortana

You can enable Cortana on a number of different ways, but setting it up is the same experience throughout the operating system.

Setting up Cortana in a Microsoft account

Setting up Cortana on your device using a Microsoft Account is a very straightforward process. You can enable the assistant during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) as you install Windows 10, or when you're signed in to your account by using the following steps:

  1. Click the search box in the taskbar.
  2. Click the Cortana can do much more button.
  3. Click Sure.

By enabling the assistant, you'll allow Cortana to access your microphone, collect speech and handwriting patterns, and typing history.

Keep in mind that during the out-of-box experience on Windows 10 Mobile, Cortana will enable by default as you sign in with your Microsoft account.

Setting up Cortana in a local account

If you're using a local account on your PC, the process to enable Cortana is identical, with the only difference that you'll need to enter your Microsoft account credentials manually.

  1. Click the search box in the taskbar.
  2. Click the Cortana can do much more button.
  3. Click Sure.

  4. Click Sign in.
  5. On the "Add your Microsoft account" page, enter your credentials.
  6. Click Sign in.

  7. You'll also be prompted to connect your Windows 10 profile with your Microsoft account, but if that's something you don't want, click the Sign in to just this app instead link.

Getting familiar with the Cortana user interface

Starting with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Cortana includes some tweaks in the user interface, but the feature remains very much the same like in previous versions.

You can open Cortana by clicking the search box in the taskbar, or you can use the Windows key + S keyboard shortcut to open the app or the Windows key + C keyboard shortcut to open Cortana in listening mode.

Cortana regular mode (left) and Cortana listening mode (right)

The app features a canvas where you'll see current information based on what Cortana knows about you, such as latest news, package tracking and flights updates, important reminders, and occasional tips and tricks.

Then there is the left rail with a hamburger button on the top-left side, which is similar to what we see in Windows Store apps, gives you access to settings, a shortcut to home, and access to Cortana's Notebook.

Cortana supported regions and languages

Cortana is not available on every supported country Windows 10 is available. Microsoft builds and personalizes the digital assistant to be relevant to a specific region. Actually, the company takes its time to understand what's important in each country to deliver a consistent experience. This means that Cortana's personality is different in each country.

The digital assistant is available in the following countries and languages:

  • Australia (English)
  • Brazil (Portuguese)
  • Canada (English/French)
  • China (Chinese Simplified)
  • France (French)
  • Germany (German)
  • India (English)
  • Italy (Italian)
  • Japan (Japanese)
  • Mexico (Spanish)
  • Spain (Spanish)
  • United Kingdom (English)
  • United States (English)

Cortana receives regular updates, as such, you can expect Microsoft to roll out its assistant to more countries in future updates.

How to disable tab preview on Microsoft Edge on Windows 10

If you find Microsoft Edge's tab preview not being a useful feature, in this guide we'll show you how to disable it with a small tweak in the registry.

While Microsoft Edge still has a few miles to go to catch up with the competition, Microsoft has done great work on bringing new features, improvements, and making the web browser more power efficient.

Among all the features in the default web browser for Windows 10, you'll also find tab preview. This feature allows the browser to show a small thumbnail (very similar to the thumbnail for apps in the taskbar) that gives you a peek as you hover the mouse over open tabs without the need to move away from your current page.

This little feature can be useful for some, but it can also be distracting for many users, as it can get in the way of elements of the web browser. Fortunately, there is an easy way to disable preview for tabs on Microsoft Edge by modifying the registry.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to disable tab preview on Microsoft Edge.

How to disable tab preview on Microsoft Edge

Important: Before you make any changes to the registry, make sure to understand that these type of changes may cause irreversible damage to your current installation if they're not done properly. It's recommended that you do a full backup of your computer before proceeding. You've been warned!

  1. Close Microsoft Edge.
  2. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  3. Type regedit, and click OK to open the Windows registry.
  4. Browse the following path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge\TabbedBrowsing

  5. Right-click on the right side, select New, and click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  6. Name the new key TabPeekEnabled.
  7. Click OK.

  8. Double-click the newly created key and make sure it set to 0.
  9. Click OK.

  10. Close the registry editor to complete the task.

Once you completed the steps, start Microsoft Edge, open multiple web pages, and hover over the tabs, and you should no longer see tab previews. Instead you'll only see the name of the web page as a tool tip.

At any time, you can turn on tab preview on the web browser, simply follow the steps mentioned above, but on step number 8, make sure to set the key from 0 to 1.

Finally, it's important to note that changes made to the registry may get removed during a new feature update rollout like after installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update or equivalent release. As such, make sure to bookmark this page for future reference.

How to use Cortana search on Windows 10

$

Are you getting mixed search results? Here we'll tell you how to use Cortana to narrow down your searches to get exactly what you're looking for on Windows 10.

When you talk about Cortana and search on Windows 10 is like saying the same thing. Sure, Cortana excels on an array of tasks, such as creating reminders, syncing notifications between your phone and PC, and even when using natural language, but the assistant is about a lot more.

Microsoft has designed Cortana as part of the next generation of search, which is about getting personal results and giving you things based on knowing your patterns without you having to ask.

On Windows 10, Cortana integrates with the operating system's local search feature to help you find local files and settings, and also with Bing to offer relevant search results from the web to answer any questions.

Here we'll explain and walk you through the steps to search for files, settings, and get relevant web search results using Cortana on Windows 10.

How to use Cortana to search on Windows 10

On Windows 10, there are two ways to search using Cortana: you can use the search box in the taskbar to enter your search query to find anything you need. Or you can start Cortana in listening mode using the "Hey Cortana" feature or the Windows key + Shift + C keyboard shortcut to ask the assistant to find anything you want.

Cortana text search (left), Cortana voice command search (middle), Cortana listening mode (right)

You can use Cortana to find virtually anything on your computer or on the web. Typically, you'll use the assistant to find files stored locally on your computer or OneDrive, settings, and web results to answer more complex searches.

How to search files and settings using Cortana

While Microsoft has designed Cortana to make search super easy on Windows 10, you'll notice that you won't just get one answer. Instead, you will get a lot of results from different categories, because Cortana doesn't quite understand the context of your question unless you're specific.

For example, when you do a search, you will get results from any source that Cortana can search, including local files and settings, and web results using Bing.

If you want to get more specific results from a query, you have to do your search with commands that Cortana can understand, which are similar to those queries you use every day on your favorite search engine.

To narrow down your Cortana search to only files and settings and apps, you can use the following examples in the search box:

  • Apps: Mail
  • Documents: Business Presentation 2016
  • Folders: Personal Docs
  • Music: Bon Jovi
  • Photos: Veronica's Party
  • Settings: Windows Update
  • Videos: Vacation

In the examples above, you can see that you can quickly type a category and a colon to specify the search type followed by your search query, which will help Cortana understand exactly the type of search you want to perform.

As you type a query in the search box you'll get a number of shortcuts buttons to refine your search. But if you prefer typing to mousing and clicking, these quick commands can make your searches even faster.

If you prefer using the shortcut buttons, you can also click the More button on the top-right to see the complete list of categories you can search using Cortana.

Additionally, you can type a query in the search box, and click the title of the category to see more results.

If you're an Office 365 subscriber, you can even connect your account with Cortana to search email, calendar, people, and Office 365 documents.

Local search on Windows 10 Mobile works different

While the concept of search using Cortana also works on Windows 10 Mobile, there some limitations. For example, on the mobile version of Windows 10, you can't search for specific files and settings within the Cortana app.

If you're looking for an specific file, you either need to open File Explorer or OneDrive and use the search functionality within that app, and you need to open the Settings app to find any settings.

How to search the web using Cortana

Searching the web using Cortana is not much different than doing a search using your web browser using Bing or Google. However, there are a few things you need to know to get the best web search results.

To search the web using Cortana there is only one command you need to know: web: followed by the search term. The example below shows how you should type a web search query in Cortana:

  • Web: How to use Cortana on Windows 10

While the Web command defines the context of your search, you'll come across two types of results: Cortana instant answers within the app, which technically you don't have to specify, because it's already programmed to respond to particular questions. This is the logic that makes Cortana feel more intelligent.

Here are some examples of specific things Cortana can answer within the app:

  • NYC Weather
  • Microsoft Stock
  • What movies are playing near me?
  • What's the time in the UK?
  • How tall is Jessica Biel?

Here a few other examples searches you can do with the digital assistant:

  • News: This command brings up the latest trending news within the app.
  • Define: When you need a definition of a particular word, you can use the keyword define followed by the word. For example, define automobile. This command will trigger a search on Bing, and the search engine will use the Oxford Dictionary to provide the definition.
  • 42+8/23: Use math standard operators +, -, *, /, %, and ^ in the search box to calculate anything you want, and press Enter to bring up the calculator.
  • Translate: When you need to translate text to another language type translate and press Enter to open Cortana in translation mode.

Web search (left), recognized web search (middle), math search (right)

When you type a search that Cortana isn't programmed to answer, you'll only see related search terms. In which case, you'll need to press Enter to open Microsoft Edge and hope the Bing search result page shows up a link with the answer you're seeking.

Remember that everything you do with Cortana (unless is a local search for files and settings) is an online search, and Bing is responsible for it.

Don't you believe me? Try to disconnect your computer from the internet and see if Cortana can answer something as simple as 2+2.

How to search with voice command using Cortana

Cortana has been designed to work with the keyboard and mouse, as well as with voice commands using natural language.

If you're using the hands-free feature, then simply say "Hey Cortana" followed by the search term. For example:

  • "Hey Cortana: How's the weather."

If "Hey Cortana" is not enabled on your device, then use the Windows key + Shift + C keyboard shortcut and say your search term. For example:

  • "How tall is Mount Everest?"

Remember you're not limited to say keywords in your search, just use natural language. For Cortana, "Can you tell me what is an automobile?" and "define automobile" are the same thing. However, the search experience may be different using voice commands and typing the query in the search box.

How to customize your Fitbit using Windows 10 Mobile

Choose what info displays on your device, change which arm you wear your Fitbit on, customize the watch display and more!

A big part of the fun of Fitbit comes as your numbers climb! When you see your step count or calories burned digits scrolling by it feels like you're cashing in on the slot machine of life!

But maybe you don't want every single activity measured and displayed on your Fitbit? No problem! With the Fitbit app Windows 10 Mobile you can customize which activities are displayed on your Fitbit.

How to hide and show your activity categories in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

If you care about your heart rate and step count, but don't care so much about knowing your calories or distance, you can customize what information is available through your Fitbit's display.

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Tap on the profile and settings tab on the far right at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a circle in it and three horizontal lines).
  3. Tap on your device. It will appear right under your profile at the top of the screen (mine is the Charge HR).

Launch Fitbit, tap on settings tab, and tap on your device.

  4. Tap on customize display.
  5. Tap on a checked box to remove an item from your Fitbit display. You can toggle every option but the step count; your Fitbit will track your steps no matter what.

Even if you remove this information from your Fitbit device, it will still be displayed on the dashboard in the Fitbit app. On Windows 10 Mobile, you can't hide an activity in the app's dashboard.

How to rearrange categories in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

If you want to see your categories in a certain order when you're tapping through your categories in the Fitbit app, you can rearrange their order. Not only that, you can change that order for display on your Fitbit too.

  5. Tap on the edit button at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a pencil).
  6. Tap and hold a category you would like to reorder (for example: floors).

Tap on customize display, tap on the edit button, and tap and hold a category.

  7. Drag the category higher or lower on the list until it shows up in the location you want it to be.
  8. Release your finger from the screen and your category will now be moved.
  9. Tap on the check mark at the bottom of the screen to exit edit mode.

Drag the category to the desired location, release your finger, and tap the check mark.

Once you've reordered your activity categories list in the app, your activities will appear in that order when you view them on your Fitbit. If this does not happen, then you just need to sync your Fitbit.

Programming the tap feature on your Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

On certain Fitbit models (Charge, Charge HR, and Flex) when you tap twice on the strap of your device you will launch a particular activity's information. On Windows 10 Mobile, you can program through Fitbit's dashboard what happens when you tap on the tracker.

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Tap on the profile and settings tab on the far right at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a circle in it and three horizontal lines).

Launch Fitbit, tap on settings tab, and tap on your device.

  5. Tap on the circle next to the activity you would like to display when tapping on the strap (you can also select "off" if you don't want anything to happen when you tap on the strap).

Tap on tap gesture, and tap on the circle next to the desired activity.

Now when you tap twice on your device's strap, you can display the information of your choice! This is a nice way to organize your information so you don't have to rely on the device's button and scroll through several activities to find the one you want.

How to change the Clock Face in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

You've got a Fitbit and are wearing it all the time. You've now gotten used to the idea of checking the time on your wrist (like your grandparents and the dinosaurs did) instead of pulling your phone out of your pocket. Not happy with the default clock display on your Fitbit? No problem! Depending on your Fitbit model, you can change the clock display using the Windows 10 Mobile Fitbit app.

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).

Change your main goal in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

If you use a Fitbit that has a screen, your main goal will show a progress bar underneath the information displayed on the screen to show you how far along you are. For example, if your main goal is walking a certain number of steps in a day, when you look at the step count on your Fitbit display, you'll see a line underneath the number of steps. A short line means you've only just started making progress, while a long line shows you're nearing your goal.

You can change which activity category displays a status bar underneath it by changing your main goal in the Fitbit app settings.

  4. Tap on the Main Goal drop down menu.
  5. Tap on one of the displayed options that corresponds with what you want your main goal to be.

Tap on the main goal menu, tap on a goal, and tap the sync button

You're so involved in your fitness daydream you stumble over a curb, dropping your lunch, which also caused you to step on a banana peel (from your lunch) rolling your other ankle! Why did you pack a banana peel in your lunch and how the heck can you hope to compete in your challenge?

Don't worry, you'll get it next time! For now you have to rest up and gracefully bow out of your current challenge.

However, you should brace yourself for ridicule from any Fitbit friends participating in the challenge you've just quit.

How to manage friends in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

Add friends to your Fitbit account to keep yourself competitive or delete them if they're dragging you down!

A great way to stay motivated to achieve your fitness goals is to add friends to your Fitbit. It's a lot harder to convince yourself that it's impossible to walk 10,000 steps in a day if you can see five friends on Fitbit are continually crushing that goal! Keep yourself from falling behind with your fitness goals and enjoy the camaraderie and competition (friendly or otherwise, your call) that comes with a robust list of Fitbit friends.

How to add friends to your Fitbit account on Windows 10 Mobile

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Swipe left or right to access the friends tab. It's the one with two head-and-shoulders silhouettes on it.
  3. The friends you've added to your Fitbit account will be displayed here. Tap the Add Friend button to add a new friend to your account.

Launch Fitbit, swipe to friends tab, and tap add friend.

  4. You have a few a few places you can add contacts from by tapping on the respective tab:

    • Under contacts tap the + next to your contact's name to add a contact from your Windows 10 Mobile phone.
    • Under the Facebook tab, tap the + next to your friend's name to add a contact.
    • Under the Email tab, tap the + next to your friend's email address to add a contact.

Add a contact from your phone contacts, add a contact from Facebook and add a contact by email.

That's it! The person has now been added to your Fitbit friend's list. It's up to them to decide whether or not to accept your friendship. If they do, you can now invite them friends join you in Fitbit challenges. If they don't, then they're probably worried that you are a fine specimen of fitness, so they're probably hitting the gym and exercising like a maniac to get up to your level before accepting your Fitbit request.

How to interact with your friends on Fitbit for Windows 10 Mobile

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Swipe left or right to access the friends tab. It's the one with two head-and-shoulders silhouettes on it.
  3. Tap and hold on your friend to launch their profile.

    • Tap the taunt button at the bottom of the screen (looks like a face sticking out its tongue with their eyes closed) to send a heckling emoji to your friend it will appear in their messages.

Scroll to view achievements, tap the cheer button, and tap the taunt button.

    • You can also tap on the messages button at the top menu bar in the Fitbit app to view and send messages between friends and see the badges you've earned. Tap the message button and tap the messages tab.

Another fun way to interact with friends is to add them to a challenge. The more you can integrate Fitbit into your life as a social and lifestyle tool, the more likely you will be to see great results.

How to delete a friend from your Fitbit account on Windows 10 Mobile

Some people get their Fitbit and it becomes a part of their life. They wear it all the time (except in the shower, they're not waterproof), they are constantly passing their goals, and they're cheering you on in your friendly challenges (just 5,000 more steps...I'll chase you with a flaming torch and pitchfork to help you out)!

But some friends may fall off the wagon. They stop syncing their data, they never participate in the challenges, and they never even updated their profile picture. Your Fitbit is already helping you drop weight from your body, time to drop some weight from your Friend list.

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Swipe left or right to access the friends tab. It's the one with two head-and-shoulders silhouettes on it.
  3. The friends you've added to your Fitbit account will be displayed here. Tap on your friend's name to launch their profile.

Launch Fitbit, swipe to friends tab, and tap on a friend.

  4. Tap the more button in the bottom right corner of the screen (looks like three dots in a line).
  5. Tap delete friend.
  6. Tap OK to remove this friend from your Fitbit account.

Tap more button, tap delete friend, and tap okay.

Maybe this will be the kick in the pants your friend needs to raise their Fitbit game? If they do become active again you can always choose to re-add people as a Fitbit friend.

How to manage your account in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

Update your Fitbit profile, change your activity goals, and logout of your account.

Some of the Fitbit settings are limited for your Windows 10 Mobile phone like receiving notifications from Fitbit or call notifications on your device. However, the basics of managing your profile are all there and very easy to use.

Update your profile in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Tap on the profile and settings tab on the far right at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a circle in it and three horizontal lines).
  3. Tap on your name. It will appear at the top of the screen, above your device.

Launch Fitbit, Tap on settings tab, and tap your name.

  4. Tap on the edit your profile button.

  5. Tap on one of the text fields to update your profile information (I tapped on Name). You can choose from:

    • Name
    • Birthday
    • Height
    • Weight
    • Gender

Tap on edit your profile and tap in a text field to edit.

Once you're done editing your profile, any changes you make in the app will be saved to your Fitbit account.

How to update your activity goals in Fitbit on Windows 10 Mobile

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Tap on the profile and settings tab on the far right at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a circle in it and three horizontal lines).

Launch Fitbit, and tap on settings tab.

  3. Tap on the Activity Goals button to launch to goals menu.
  4. Tap on any field you would like to edit. You can choose from:

    • Steps
    • Distance
    • Calories Burned
    • Active Minutes
    • Floors

Tap on activity goals and tap the field you want to edit.

Any changes you make in these fields will change your default goal settings, making it easier or more difficult for you to receive badges based on how you've changed them.

Increasing your goals is a great way to make sure you're always making fitness progress with your Fitbit.

Decreasing goals is a good idea if you're consistently missing your targets. You don't want to make it too easy on yourself by decreasing your goals, but it can be discouraging if you live in the flatlands and don't live or work somewhere with multiple floors and keep missing the goal of climbing 10 floors a day.

It's important to adjust and customize these settings for the way you want to use your Fitbit. That way you'll have more fun as you earn badges and see your fitness level improve.

How to logout of your Fitbit account on Windows 10 Mobile

If you're having trouble connecting to your Fitbit or are no longer going to use your Windows 10 Mobile phone, you can logout of Fitbit with a few taps.

  1. Launch Fitbit from your Applications List (or the start screen if you have it pinned).
  2. Tap on the profile and settings tab on the far right at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a circle in it and three horizontal lines).

Launch Fitbit and tap the settings tab.

  3. Scroll down to locate the logout button at the bottom of the page.
